Attraction details
Recommended length of visit: <1 hour
Owner description: 2-minute walk from JR Motomachi Station. It is a shopping street, formed in 1874, where you can feel Kobe the most. If you stand right in front of "La Luce," the beautiful stained glass arch that is a gate to Motomachi 1st street, you will be able to see Mount Rokko in the north and feel, from the south, the refreshing wind that Meriken Wharf brings. There are a lot of long-established stores that have been founded more than 50 years ago, such as kimono shops that sell kimono, yukata (informal cotton kimono), etc., bag shops, and coffee shops where you can relax comfortably.

Motomachi is a covered shopping street... almost like Shinsaibashi at Osaka. However, I feel that here the walkways are wider. There are variety of shops ranging from desserts cafe, patisseries, restaurants, drugs stores (that also sells cosmetics & skin care), men's wear, children's wear to kimono shop. We enjoyed ourselves even just by window shopping.

Motomachi is similar in form to many other shopping arcades in Kansai with the exception of wide walkways, which is good. Plenty of shops selling different things. One end of the street facing Daimaru department store has a very interesting intersection. There are several pedestrian crossings on this intersection and when the traffic lights change, you see people going in many different directions. You'd expect utter chaos but somehow everyone manages to get to the other side in an organised way. It's just amazing to watch.

While walking from the Sannomiya Train Station to the Port of Kobe you can visit the Motomachi shopping street along the way. The Motomachi is a mile long covered shopping street containing every possible shop/store you can imagine. The main street tends to have the more high-end fashion stores and fabric shops. If you sneak over a street, which is almost under the elevated JR tracks you enter a different shopping world with old quirky shops, which sell everything from electronics to food. Its not hard to spend a whole day just gawking at all the things for sale.

I totally loved this shopping arcade!!!
It has smaller shops and less chain stores in here, unlike the Sannomiya shopping arcades so in a way there is more variety shoppingwise :)

Theres also lots of Kimono shops around and in front of those shops they sell little bits of things that they make using the remnants of komino fabric :) so you can get a pretty little purse for like 100 yen :) Great for little souvenirs :)
