“Better than expected! Ex”
Reviewed February 14, 2018 for a stay in January 2018

We were so impressed! Thank you very much. The house was just wonderful. The deco is stunning, the kimonos, the samurai Harry WOW! Authentic! We really felt in Japan. The photos do not do it justice.
Everything was more than perfect for our family, the house is very conveniently located. And one more thing, thank you Akiko for the great service we received. We can't wait to visit again and will be in touch for sure!

“Home away from home while in Japan”
Reviewed July 12, 2017 for a stay in July 2017

We were so glad to find this lovely place to use as a home base when going out on our adventures while in Kyoto. The home is very comfortable and had all the things we needed. The owners were extremely helpful, with excellent directions and lots of maps and suggestions of things to do and see while there. And we loved the area. So glad we found it and were able to stay there!

“Great Base in Kyoto.”
Reviewed July 10, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We spent six nights at 'our' little machiya. It is a very well presented and aesthetically pleasing property, with all the mod cons (kitchen appliances, washer/dryer, iron, good bathroom, airconditioning and great wi-fi). The hosts were very easy to deal with via email and responded to inquiries in a speedy and pleasant manner. It was very easy to catch taxis outside the house and we did not find it difficult to get around the city from this base. There is a local station near by that we also used for some site-seeing. The Kiyomizu-dera Temple can be easily reached on foot from here. There is a Lawson convenience store close by to purchase drinks etc. There are small local restaurants within close walking distance. I would highly recommend this property.

The only observations that I would make (and these are not criticisms but may help other travelers to assess the suitability of the property) are: 1) we were three adults (parents and adult child) and felt confined ; I think that five adults would be difficult in terms of space and privacy - unless you know each other very well; 2) there is very little room for luggage and unpacking suitcases (as you cannot take suit cases up the very narrow and steep stairs and the matting on the floor is not suitable for suitcases;3) the stairs to the bedroom area upstairs are very steep and would be difficult for those who are not agile or elderly; and 4) the futon is challenging if you are not used to sleeping on the floor. Having said this, it was a great experience and insight into Japanese life and use of space.

Thank you very much for your comment. We're glad you like the house and enjoyed your stay.
We are in the middle of Kyoto, Japan, and the concept of space is certainly not the same as in Australia or America, and may need to adjust.

“Great place for a family in Kyoto”
Reviewed December 28, 2015 for a stay in December 2015

Our family of 5 (including 3 teenage boys) had a great 5-night stay in this townhouse. It is extremely well-located, very convenient to Gion and a major bus stop is just steps from the front door. It is down a small alley and very quiet for a place in the middle of the city. The house itself is small by American standards but perfectly adequate. There's lots of clever storage and space use. Everything is fresh and clean and comfortable. We did some cooking in the kitchen and it had everything we needed to make breakfasts and even dinner. It feels both very traditional and very modern and was a delightful base for our days in Kyoto and nearby cities.

“MACHIYA first experience!!”
Reviewed July 30, 2015 for a stay in May 2015

It was the first time we stayed in a Machiya, and having rented a whole house only for us was a great experience. We could really enjoy and relax only among friends. The place was beautiful and easily spacious enough for all of us. Its location is particularly good as a starting point to visit the city. I particularly appreciated the view of the Tsubo garden from the bathroom. The Samurai armor in the Japanese-style room scared some of us. But in general, the style of the house and its features let us experience living in a traditional Japanese house and we all enjoyed it very much. All the five of us hope to be able to come back and enjoy the place again.

“Simply fantastic home in Kyoto!”
Reviewed July 11, 2015 for a stay in July 2015

We had an amazing stay at Kiyomizu Machiya in Kyoto. The house is beautifully designed, spotless, with everything we needed for a family of 4, and perfectly located to main sights and temples. On top of that, Akiko and Patrick are the perfect hosts! They gave us great suggestions about where to go and best restaurants to eat at. We really enjoyed meeting them, and we highly recommend staying in their beautiful home. Thanks to their hospitality, Kyoto was our favorite stop in Japan!
