We didn't actually enter this museum. At the entrance we were warned by the staff that there were no English explanations for anything. Entry was 800Y pp and there was an English audio guide available but that was another 500Y pp. That made for an expensive look for 4 of us so we didn't bother....

While the displays have no English translations, they offer an audio guide for 500¥, which is less than $5 USD. (Admission is 800¥ for adults.) There are a few hands-on activities to go with the displays which were kind of fun. This museum is pretty small, so you can fit it in to your trip to the Gion area easily.

On our last day of our stay we decided to check out this next door museum. On entering we were warned by the staff that there were no English Translations. We paid the admission anyway. The staff were pretty helpful and went out of their way to explain things to us. It was Fun and Educational at the same time. We should have gone on the 1st day, as it was a good insight to Japan.

This museum was really cool, although to enjoy it you definitely need at least some knowledge of kanji, and Japanese as well. I don't speak Japanese, but my wife and her friend do, which allowed me to enjoy the museum anyway. It is designed for Japanese students, so there are many interactive exhibits showing the development and history of Kanji. The signs are only in Japanese, although many of the staff speak excellent English. If you don't know anything about Kanji, this isn't the place for you, but for those interested in it and with some knowledge of Japanese, it's worth a visit.
