Nugget Point is well worth a visit with short walks and penguin viewing and the drive there has some stunning sea views.
The final 9km is along unsealed road but even in our large campervan it was no trouble and had plenty of spots which were suitable for freedom camping.
The highlight for us was the Yellow Eyed Penguin lookout where we were able to see 4 as soon as we arrived and they were at most only 70m away. A pair of binoculars or a camera with a good zoom allows for better viewing. However, if you would like to get closer to this particular breed of penguin it is worth driving on to Curio bay where you can get much closer, although some people were getting a bit too close.

It's not the best and shortest road to lead one to Nugget Point but in the end we were pleased to go there. This place in not as unique as it was advertised, still wonderful scenery, pretty views and relaxing walk around the place made it worth the trip. For us 20-30 minutes was enough to spend in this place. Then we moved to Roaring Bay's hide to admire penguins. Combination of these two sights was highlight of that day. We saw boats with tourist approaching the cost line so I recommend considering such option as well.

We visited Nugget Point at the end of a daylong driving tour of the Catlins, and we saved the best for last. After a 7 km drive down a gravel road, we found the parking area. The trail leads up along a ridge to the lighthouse. There are spectacular views on all sides. In front of the lighthouse there is a lookout where you can scan up and down the coast below. The previous reviewer is correct-bring your binoculars to see the seals down below. The nuggets are a unique feature and worth seeing.
This was my one of my husband's favorite scenic places in New Zealand.
On the way out, we stopped at Roaring Bay and walked to the penguin blind, since it was late in the day, but weren't fortunate enough to see any penguins.

Again somewhere we always sent the vistors when we lived just down the road. Guaranteed to see seals and sometimes even elephant seals. Great scenery as well.

We stayed in Catlins and did most of the sceneries, attractions and walks.
Down below along the path towards the Nugget point was a sall group of seals on the rocks, and a much larger group with many pups on the first nuggets.
Because the distance is rather large, it is best to bring some binoculars to observe them.
Just before the Nugget point is a bay where before sunset some yellow-eyed penguins may land; if you are lucky.
There are no restaurants nearby, so bring your own thermos with hot drink, like is useful in more locations of the South Island.
