“Must-see tourist attractions in Yuan Yang”

Yuanyang Rice Terraces

Rice terraces are seen everywhere in Yuan Yang. Three lookouts - Duoyishu, Bada & Laohuzui - incur an admission fee. While tourist groups must visit these lookouts, independent tourists don't have to pay for the lookouts in order to enjoy the view of these magnificent rice terraces.

If you do visit these paid lookouts, you must go there earlier in order to get a look spot for it. These lookouts are packed with tourists. Duoyishu is well-known for the sunrise view but Bada and Laohuzui are better visited at sunset. You could also visit other beautiful rice terraces such as Longshuba for free.

For tourists who are not very much into photography, 2-day stay at Yuan Yang is sufficient. The 2-day admission fee of these lookouts is RMB100 which covers four tourist attractions - Duoyishu, Bada, Laohuzui and Qing Kou Cultural Village. There are a lot of private vans and taxis at Xinjizhen which could take tourists to these places. Tourists could either hire one or share it with other tourists and the locals. Price negotiation is essential.

Yuanyang was very beautiful. The best time to come here is in the winter, when the terraces are filled with water. The local people are very nice and welcoming. We stayed in Yuanyang youth hostel which was great and I would stay here again and they offer both Chinese and western food at a good price. We just walked to the patties, took pictures and ate local food. One of the most beautiful scenery I've ever seen. We had to pay a fee to come to the scenic area which is where our hostel was located. That was the only thing I didn't like because the company charging money is private and the locals never get any of that money.

You cannot miss this place while you're in Yunnan.

Seeing it for the first time is breathtaking. But... weather (fog mainly) plays a big part in if and how you will enjoy your visit, since the rice terraces are steeped in a v-shaped valley. Anyhow, the terraces are about all there is. Life is simple here, with not much else to offer the traveler. Farming is changing (what is not?!), so as a result, I saw many abandoned terraces. Yuanyang has applied for recognition as a UN World Heritage site, much more has to be done to justify it perhaps. More attractive features have to be added (?) to a simple farming corner. Mind you, those fantastic colorful pictures you see online or elsewhere could be elusive. A brief visit (most people do 1 or 2 days) may be marred by fog much if not "all" that time you're there.

Sunrise and terraces seen from Jacky's Guesthouse were so fantastic. But the weather was so changeable. Sometimes was too foggy to see the scenery.
