Seeing it for the first time is breathtaking. But... weather (fog mainly) plays a big part in if and how you will enjoy your visit, since the rice terraces are steeped in a v-shaped valley. Anyhow, the terraces are about all there is. Life is simple here, with not much else to offer the traveler. Farming is changing (what is not?!), so as a result, I saw many abandoned terraces. Yuanyang has applied for recognition as a UN World Heritage site, much more has to be done to justify it perhaps. More attractive features have to be added (?) to a simple farming corner. Mind you, those fantastic colorful pictures you see online or elsewhere could be elusive. A brief visit (most people do 1 or 2 days) may be marred by fog much if not "all" that time you're there.
