I hesitated for so long on whether or not the Capillas de Marmol would be worth the effort (4 hour drive one way, 2.5 hour flight, boat ride). But to be honest, all that effort was what made the experience so much sweeter. When you see the caves, the cathedral, the colors and the shapes. It feels otherworldy, it feels like you really somewhere else and its simply amazing. I cannot speak enough how amazing this place is (and I've seen a ton of amazing sights in my life). Getting there is not easy but can be done. GETTING THERE: The trip to get there was not easy, especially for a solo traveler with limited time (I had a window of 24 hours over 2 days to see it and make my flight back to the US). I almost decided not to go but luckily found Lautaro on a local website. His information is ((Lautaro Silva Saaverdra, lautaro_s@hotmail.com) Researching the Marble Cathedrals (information, transportation and accommodations) is nearly impossible, and getting accommodations was tough (especially as I didn’t speak Spanish well). I found Lautaro on the local tour guide site and I was so HAPPY to have to have found him. He took care of all of my transportation from Balmaceda to Puerto Tranquillo, accommodation (especially last minute since my accommodations fell through) and organizing my evening and morning tours of the Catedro Marmol. Lautaro speaks multiple languages and was easy to understand, he drove well through the Carrera Austral (despite challenging roads), was highly accommodating to making changes to the itinerary as we went along. His pricing was also very reasonable, given the 8 hour journey (4 hour back and forth) as well as taking care of all the details for my trip. Hiring Lautaro allowed me to see the Marble Cathedrals within a 24 hour period and make it back to Santiago to make my US flight back in time.

The Marmol Cathedral is a little piece of heaven on earth! It’s is difficult to find words to describe that place. The nature there in unbelievably amazing! The lake, the mountains around, and the Marmol rocks are extraordinary! The staff are so friendly and nice and we found so cheap the trip to the cathedral (ten thousand Chilean pesos) which completely worth it!!! My sister and I almost did it twice!!! Just a warning for inexperience drivers (as me there) on the way down to Bahía Mansa... the road requests extra care as it’s not paved!!! But if you drove on the Carretera u will be totally fine!!! One of the best places I’ve ever been for sure!

One of the reasons to stop in Rio Tranquilo. You can get there either with a motor boat tour direct from Rio Tranquilo or get a kayak tour (our choice) which will take you from Rio Tranquilo by van to Bahia Mansa, about 15 mins south, then into kayaks where you paddle about 20 mins to the Capillas and Catedral, At the base of a steep cliff of the same type of rock, they are rocks islands with impressive arches carved out by wind and water. In places they are high enough to kayak through. About 100m further on there are some more caverns at the base of the cliff face itself which are also worth a visit.

It is included in the trip to Catedral de Marmol. It is a rock that is shaped like an egg from strong wind and waves.

We visited the Capillas and the Catedral in our last morning in Puerto Rio Tranquilo, after two days of rain. That day, we were the first ones (and the only ones) to arrive at Bahia Mansa to do the boat tour. When we get there, it was still cloudy and grey. Even though, we did enjoy the tour until then. The two men who took us were very nice and attentive. However, the best part was about to come. When the clouds were gone and the sun shone, the deep blue of the lake water contrasted with the pale colours of the marble. It was amazing. I surely recommend.
I recommend doing the tour from Bahia Mansa. During my searches prior to my trip, I read it was much cheaper and faster to get to the Capillas. However, if you are by car, take notice the way down to the bay is very steep and you may need an extra strength from your vehicle.
