We went to the Tollgate for an evening meal, having heard of it's reputation we were really looking forward to our evening. However the staff hardly noticed we were there after 20 mins I had to find someone to take our order and the food although arriving quickly and using excellent produce was very ordinary. The highlight of the meal was my prawn cocktail starter and from there things went downhill badly. The customer service was some of the worst I have experianced, after the meal I went to pay and the woman behind the bar managed to ignore me but continue with her conversation with someone else as she took my money, no mean feat! Please note this review is for the restaurant not the B&B.

A charming Wiltshire gem full of warmth and character with just 4 guest rooms.
Our room, Parsley, was immaculate, pretty decor, generous hospitality tray, fresh fruit , snuggy bed and with many individual features that would put some 5* properties to shame. Being close to Christmas, tastefully decorated lounge with crackling log fires.
The carafe of sherry deposited in our room by our hosts on our arrival back from the Bath Christmas Market was a lovely surprise and very welcome.
The staff, headed by proprietor Alison, were very friendly and professional. All taking great pride in their work - which showed. Meanwhile, in the ktichen - the busy chef and his team were creating scrummy delights for us - really good to see such seasonal and local produce being utilised. Being December we enjoyed venison, partridge and pheasant delicately served with good root vegetables. An excellent set menu, blackboard specials and a la carte - all set to seriously tempt you! ... not to mention the home-made bread with olives, delicous local cheeses and creative desserts (again all home made, including ice-creams/sorbets). During our two evenings the restaurant was full which made for a lovely busy and buzzy atmosphere. Generous breakfast, again using all local products. Definately a winner and marked for a return visit before too long!

We selected The Tollgate Inn because it was just outside Bath. What a find!! We arrived tired after a long drive and within minutes felt relaxed by the "feel" of the Tollgate. Our room was beautifully appointed. The staff are wonderful and our dinner was out of this world. Breakfast was huge and lunch was definitely not required..... Thank you Alison and Alexander for offering us such a wonderful stay. Highly recommend a stay here!
PS We hope the wedding went well ....

We had the smallest room, but was still very cute and we couldn't grumble at all. The food was delicious - my husband preferred it to the meal we had had at Gordon Ramsay's at Claridges in March!!! As it was just very tasty lovely food!! We would definitely go again! My only grumble would be the patronising tone of some of the memos put up by the owners - but apart from that it was lovely!!! Breakfast was amazing and was exceptional value for money!!

This was my second stay here and it offers first class rooms and food along with a great selection of real ale and friendly and welcoming staff. 5 star accommodation for little more than the price of room only at a budget hotel.
