Having visited the Tollgate many times in the past, being well satisfied with the cosy welcoming atmosphere and excellent food, this was only our second visit to the Tollgate under its new ownership. The first was in August 2013 when we popped in for lunch with friends. We were impressed with the welcome, and the beer battered fish and chips but being traditionalists asked for the meal to be served on a plate rather than on a wooden chopping board, which they did without hesitation. However, our last visit with friends for a special occasion was a on a Saturday evening and was disappointing. The decor in the upper restaurant has been updated and is minimalistic but we felt it has lost its ambience. The menu was limited and unimaginative and our starter of spiced pumpkin soup was tasteless. The main course of fish and chips was all batter and little fish and bore no comparrison to our previous visit. It appears that we will have to search elsewhere to dine out for special occasions.
