We had a two-night stay at Visalam during a trip through Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Delighted with every aspect of the hotel. We were a bit taken aback when the gates swung open in this ramshackle town, but immediately Ramu offered us a warm welcome, and we were shown to our cool, elegant rooms. The sense of history pervades the whole hotel, from the poignant story of it s foundation to the details of furniture and decoration, to the 1930's radio playing softly as we went to dinner, and then the distant lights of a train moving across the horizon into the darkness of the south. Next day Ramu took us on a tour of some of the historic Chettinad houses, and then to lunch and antique shopping in a nearby town. Returning, we found the hotel shop, which had an excellent selection, and then had to hurry to fit in all the other pleasures - a cooking class with Siva, a swim in the delightful pool, and another dinner prepared and explained by marvellous chef Ashwin. We were sorry to leave and heartily recommend the hotel to other travellers.

The_ Weeks has described Visalam well in his review. Visalam gives you such a lovely relaxing time in its out of the way location (about 2 hours rural journey from Madurai) - we just loved everything about it. Going to read up more about the Chettinad history as found it all very interesting and staying in a renovated Chettinad house was a treat. Take the walk round the village with the guide if you have the time. Kitchen was fantastic - they couldn't have been more helpful in asking us what we wanted to eat, and we were able to have our lunch sitting next to the swimming pool. Dinner was on the rooftop and again with great food. Rooms were a very generous size and sympathetically restored. Staff were so lovely and were sad leaving after only one night.

I heard about this hotel by chance and the sound of it made me decide to drive down there the same evening from Madurai. The lead up roads are downright terrible, perhaps accentuated by the rains and low visibility at night.

I was greeted at the hotel by a person who offered me a box with a huge iron key in it. The place has 8 rooms only on the ground floor with 3 different dining spaces for different meals.

Of course it's meant for foreigners traveling between Tanjore and Ramnathapuram during a temple visit, so the hotel was well booked. The rooms were huge and typically of Chettinad heritage (of what I've heard). 20 ft high ceilings and ample teak woodwork were all over the room, with ancient design fans on the ceiling. The decor was fairly contemporary in parts as well, partly because this hotel is part of a chain. Only disappointment was the twin beds that they had in my room.

Food was simply brilliant and the staff were extremely friendly and personal. Stayed here for only a night but definitely would love to come back with company.

My partner and I travel a lot in India for work and pleasure, and we were both agreed this is one of the nicest hotels we've stayed in.

With the kind of top notch service you rarely see outside the big luxury chains in a boutique-sized property - just fifteen rooms in a beautifully restored mansion - Visalam is a real rarity in India.

It's off the beaten track, in the village of Kanadukathan, which is around 80km from Trichy and 100km from Madurai. Outside the hotel, the main attraction of this town are the rows and rows of mansions built by wealthy traders and now in varying stages of decrepitude. In a characteristically nice touch, the hotel can lend you bicycles to go and explore the town - recommended.

We stayed one night but could easily have spent another day or two relaxing by their beautiful pool. All told, our bill for one night's stay and dinner came in at around INR 9200.

This is a wonderful hotel with exceptionally good service. Stay here will give you a true essence of Chettinad Homes. Morever with only some 20 odd rooms they have a choice of 5 different restaurants. The chef will personally ask you, what meal would you like to have in evening. And food is sumptuous. Neat, clean and beautiful swimming pool. The staff, always dressed in traditional dresses are very friendly. The hotel is however highly priced in comparison to other hotels you have in this region

Chettinad is "worth the journey" for seasoned India travelers and the Visalam is a sublime experience. Impeccably restored Art Deco mansion with spacious rooms and lovely public areas, delightful and caring staff, truly excellent Chettinad cuisine and a beautiful pool. If you are interested in 19th century architecture and/or a quiet stay in a beautiful village, book your stay at the Visalam. You will be amply rewarded. Fabulous beyond words!

The Visalam is a very nice and well maintaining property, even though not so large, with a nice pool and a little garden to relax their clients .
All the 15 room are very large, with sitting area and a room for bags.
Very kindly and good service, only the food was not so great, maybe the low season and the low number of clients (there were only 3 people this night!) didn’t permit to have so fresh food.
