Visalam captures a heritage Chettinad mansion with all the modern conveniences. Casino Group has done a remarkable job to ensure that you get an authentic flavour in terms of stay and food too. Do try the local dishes at the restaurant including the Biriyani.

We stayed here for two nights and were the ONLY guests. Consequently we did not get an opportunity to dine in the interesting looking Terrace restaurant. The chef and kitchen staff were very friendly but we were very disappointed with the quality of the food. Despite asking for restraint with the spices the dinner on our first night was far too spicy for our taste. There was less spice on our second night but the meal was still a let down. A plus was the provision of a free router but overall we were unhappy with the "deserted" feel of the hotel and found the charges for the unimpressive food exorbitant

This luxorious and well restored mansion provided an excellent ambiance and atmosphere for a relaxed stay-over. Semi-outside dining on roof and breakfast in garden gallery.
Specious delux rooms with fine furniture. All rooms are different.
The supersoft, non-chlorinated, specially purified pool water was a true delight never experienced before.

Johny, the manager of Visalam greeted us on the doorstep of this beautifully restored Art Deco Palace as if we were already friends, Shamala, sari clad at his side was my friend before we said hello and so they welcomed us into this most personal of hotels. Our room was cool and spacious with ante room and large roomy bathroom (for two people). The window opened onto gardens of Bouganvillia and Camillia and behind a wall an infinity pool of fresh water, oxygenated, not chlorined beckoned in the afternoon light. The emphasis is on local contact and local food, staff down to the gardeners and houseboys are strictly eye contact friendly and relaxed and happy. Trips are led by locals and knowledgeable staff and always taking you to the unexpected. A visit to the Chettiar Mansions and contact with their owners. A cautionary note and informed bargaining at the local tailors produced a shirt and skirt in 6 hours after watching the fabric being woven. An instructional meal on how to "finger eat". My husband helping chef to prepare Banana Paratha for our meal

Ecological solutions at every turn and local herbal shampoos, soaps and creams and oils for the guests to use. Most intriguing was the local towel, a thin cotton sheet that was softer than the softest turkish towel, and about three times more absorbent!

I loved this place, its staff and miss it still. Tourist grading could never do this justice, it is incomparable

Visalam is all about people; ... and its all about India and Tamil Nadu. The well-equipped English-speaking staff at Visalam really make this place a destination to enjoy. Their very clear enthusiasm for their Hotel and what they have to offer is just magic. They love it and you will too! Everyone here was on the ball; friendly, ... dare I say 'switched on" ... the chef was amazing ... so ... incredible atmosphere and amazing food and attention from the staff. If you stay here, you will stay in style. It is an up-market hotel with a slight 'family' feel. I travelled solo so not sure how others such as couples would view it. It was just ideal for me. Fabulous hotel ... as mentioned earlier; the staff actually made it!

We had a two-night stay at Visalam during a trip through Tamil Nadu and Kerala. Delighted with every aspect of the hotel. We were a bit taken aback when the gates swung open in this ramshackle town, but immediately Ramu offered us a warm welcome, and we were shown to our cool, elegant rooms. The sense of history pervades the whole hotel, from the poignant story of it s foundation to the details of furniture and decoration, to the 1930's radio playing softly as we went to dinner, and then the distant lights of a train moving across the horizon into the darkness of the south. Next day Ramu took us on a tour of some of the historic Chettinad houses, and then to lunch and antique shopping in a nearby town. Returning, we found the hotel shop, which had an excellent selection, and then had to hurry to fit in all the other pleasures - a cooking class with Siva, a swim in the delightful pool, and another dinner prepared and explained by marvellous chef Ashwin. We were sorry to leave and heartily recommend the hotel to other travellers.

The_ Weeks has described Visalam well in his review. Visalam gives you such a lovely relaxing time in its out of the way location (about 2 hours rural journey from Madurai) - we just loved everything about it. Going to read up more about the Chettinad history as found it all very interesting and staying in a renovated Chettinad house was a treat. Take the walk round the village with the guide if you have the time. Kitchen was fantastic - they couldn't have been more helpful in asking us what we wanted to eat, and we were able to have our lunch sitting next to the swimming pool. Dinner was on the rooftop and again with great food. Rooms were a very generous size and sympathetically restored. Staff were so lovely and were sad leaving after only one night.
