“Disappointed for the price”
Reviewed January 15, 2011

We arrived in the afternoon and our room was not ready. The place was run down and not close to the swimming part of the beach. We were able to find a cheaper hotel with better conditions 500m down the beach.

Giragala Village, with it's pretty gardens is set in a perfect location on Mirissa beach. The rooms are basic and reasonably comfortable. Some rooms do not have mosquito screens over open air vents so we asked for an air conditioned room that was sealed [ we were given this at no extra charge]. Nothing was too much trouble for the staff who bent over backwards to make our stay happy. In Christmas Eve we were treated to a special meal and drinks that was well above and beyond our contract with them. We though the price of room only was a bit steep but for a few dollars more the half board option provided really good value. There was also free internet access.
The rooms and dining area could be further improved with better lighting and a fresh coat of paint but a minor suggestion on my part. Really enjoyed it all.

we read some mixed reviews on the property but overall it seemed positive. As it was close to where we'd stayed the previous night, it was easy to check it out and we decided to see the rooms and have lunch.
The rooms were basic but seemed clean. There were no other guests at the hotel.
We were advised that they had occupancy so we agreed that we'd likely be back later to confirm. In the meantime we had some lunch.
I ordered a fresh lime soda which was delivered in a glass with freshly squeezed lime and a weathered bottle of soda. as i poured in the soda, i noticed the glass had cobwebs on it.
My wife needed to make a local call and asked the manager if she could use his phone. He offered and after the call, made a calculation that a 4min call was worth 80Rps.
Having seen the sea facing room on the upper floor, I noticed the gardens at the next resort which was much better groomed and looked welcoming.
The lunch menu (devilled squid for her and stir fried prawns for me (both with rice - which had a strong taste of burned rice) was less than mouthwatering. The dirty glass was slightly off putting. Finally, the 80Rps charge for the call was a rip off. International calls are being advertised throughout the country at 3-10Rps/min depending on location.
He did have internet as well at 5Rps/min.
These were the signs that suggested to me that we go elsewhere. I'm trying to keep this factual as it may not bother others - in which case, you may want to stay here. But it wasn't for us even at a discounted rate.
If looking for lunch, head one door down to the Sunset Resort - free Wifi and catch of the day - although it may have been frozen if during slow season.

The hotel is located at the quitest corner of the beach, near the best snorkelling spot. Nice outside area, but hotel itself needs some renovation.

We had stayed at a few others places and ended up in Giragala quite by accident. We fell in love with the place when we saw the lovely garden, the hammocks and beach. The Spa facility was superb and gave us some stress busting massages which also helped to enjoy our holiday more. They said they were expanding the facility and I hope they will have more massages and treatments. The staff were very friendly and helpful. ahh .. nothing like snoozing under those palm trees on the hammocks!

We wanted to make a whale watching tour in Mirissa so we asked the tour company for a recommendation for a hotel. They offered us Giragala for 4500 Rupees B&B what is quite expensive compared to other guest houses with similar standard. Our bath room was obviously not cleaned before, because there were urinary spots on the toilet seat and next to it. We complained about it and a guy with a real dirty damp cloth came and wiped the toilet seat with it. No cleaning agent, nothing but a dirty cloth that seems to be used for months. Afterwards the guy draggled the cloth through our bedroom. Really ugly.
The breakfast the next day was poor and the string hoppers tasted like chlorine.
The only good thing: Next to this guest house, there is another one called "Palm Villa", which is 10 times better with a friendly staff, good food and clean rooms for the half price.

It is a greatest place in Mirissa. Went there for a whale watching but unfortunately seen no whales, but impressions from the place covered all the negatives from the whale watching tour.
Rooms are simple, but quite clean and comfortable. The view and the sound from the second floor is incredible: palm garden, the ocean...
The best thing is about the beach: the guest house is located between 2 small bays, and in the middle of it, about 100m from the coast there is a tiny green rocky island with beautiful flowers and black rocks behind. Before afternoon when water is not so high and waves from both of the bays are not covering the sandy way to the rock, u can easily walk there and climb. The views from there are striking and astonishing! The best photos I've taken were from the top of that rock.
The beach itself is marvellous: very sandy, no rocks, water is so clear... Well seems it is also a best spot for locals to swim but it didnt disturb me much.
The rooms are available with ot without AC. The one with AC costs about 2500 SLR. As for the food, tried only the sandwiches on a breakfast, so cant say much.
I guess I'll definitely come there again for few relaxing days!
