“lovely stay”
Reviewed July 4, 2014

we had a lovely stay at the spice house. the owners are very friendly. Great food, nice garden, nice pool. It was a bit warm, the rooms have only fans, no AC. Good bathrooms. One room had a bed that was a bit too short for my daughter (1.70m tall). And there was some construction going on next door.
But we would like to stay there once more when we pass through mirissa.

A beautiful, beautiful house in a lovely setting. Very friendly and helpful owners. The dinnes were the best we had in Sri Lanka during our month.
Maybe a bit far from the main beach but the house and the pool make up for it. This place is just heaven and I would love to go back!

Room Tip: All rooms are wonderful!

Me and my husband had our honeymoon and it was lovely! The rooms were big, beautiful, clean and stylish. The whole place was set out nicely and it was so peaceful. We had a sea view, it was lovely sitting on our balcony enjoying the views. The food was awesome! Evening swimming in the pool! Overall we had a lovely romantic holiday on a budget. But felt like a 5 star hotel!

My husband and I, Granny Margot and our 3 children Isabella (20) Ed (17) and Will (11) stayed at The Spice House for 10 days over Christmas 2013 and it was wonderful experience. Phil and Wathsala were perfect hosts and made us all feel very welcome. The food was delicious and we enjoyed cooling off under the shady verandahs and swimming in the infinity pool surrounded by lush tropical foliage. We swam in the sea at the local beach just a few minutes walk away and walked along the beach to a sheltered lagoon beach where a local traditional style hotel ran yoga classes overlooking the sea. Granny Margot, who was born in Sri Lanka and lived there until she was 25, loved going into town to choose wedding flowers with Wathsala etc and resting in the peaceful living room or reading by the pool while we attempted to learn to surf at Welligama with Shaka Sign Surf. We had booked the Mud House at the bottom of the garden with 2 bedrooms, an inside loo and outside shower - open to the air and a real treat to use. However, when Phil realised that our children were not little he arranged for Adrian and I to have the newly renovated ensuite room nearby with 4 poster bed and brand new bathroom - to give us all more space. The entire Guest House is so tastefully decorated and furnished - I could not stop taking photos! We all joined Granny for breakfast since she had a room in the main house and the breakfasts are out of this world - fresh fruit, hoppers, eggs as you like them, yoghurt, juice, coffee, toast - all served either on the long, sociable table which was great for catching up with other guests stories and travel adventures/recommendations - or at one of the smaller tables either end. This was a perfect, shady spot with cooling fans over looking the tropical garden and we also enjoyed a wonderful Christmas meal there with giant prawns and curry - a very memorable experience!

As well as all this, Phil and Wathsala and all the staff were incredibly kind and helpful when Granny suffered a stroke while we were all gathered in the sitting room enjoying pre-dinner cold drinks. Phil and Wathsala arranged for a doctor to come round immediately, organised a relative to drive us to the fantastic teaching hospital in Galle where Granny was given an ECG and CT scan and kept in overnight. The lovely driver, who I think may have been Wathsala's brother, waited for us for a good few hours while Granny was being assessed and settled into her mosquito netted bed for the night - and also very kindly brought Adrian and I some sandwiches and drinks from the local shop after a few hours since we had missed out on supper and he thought we may be hungry - so thoughtful. Medically the hospital in Galle was spot on but Wathsala had had the foresight to pack us a clean sheet and pillowcase for the hospital bed which was very useful. Wathsala's brother waited outside for a good few hours and brought Adrian and I back to the Spice House (1.5 hours drive) in the early hours or the morning - and then got up again to drive Adrian back to the hospital in time for the ward round with the consultant. Thankfully Margot made a full recovery - her speech and swallow reflex returned within 24 hours as did the movement in her arm and leg - and after a trip to the Stroke Unit at her local hospital back in the UK on our return - and the right medication to prevent a further stroke - she went off to the Amazon a couple of weeks later on a river tour - not bad for a well travelled 84 year old!

We were SO impressed with Phil and Wathsala and all the staff - they treated us all like family and did their utmost to help us during a time which could have been very stressful without their help, advice and support. They even drove all the way to our final accommodation stop at Wijaya beach with a bag which Granny had left behind which was a good hour or so away by car - so kind.

We would thoroughly recommend a stay at the Spice House - stoke or not! It is the most relaxing, welcoming, tropical guest house with delicious food and stunningly decorated - you will love it. Book now - it gets booked up very quickly - we have certainly been recommending it to all our friends as a perfect base whether they are looking for complete relaxation or a base for a family week's surfing - and just a short tuk tuk ride away from Mirissa beach. Thank you Phil and Wathsala and all your wonderful staff - and please accept our apologies for the belated review.

You can trust the reviews, this place is awesome.
Most of the rooms are in a quite nice villa-building, where the owners Phil and Wathsala also live so instead of being an impersonal hotel they decided to create something which has the feeling of a family-home and it is very enjoyable in every detail.
You will not have AC and fridge in the rooms, but this is part of the "traditional living" philosophy of the owners so if you can be open enough you will experience something during your stay which is quite uniqe in this country...
We were lucky enough to get the "mud house" room at the bottom of the garden which could deserve another review in is own and you just have to see it because no pictures can return that feeling with the big terrace, the shower outside and everything... truly amazing.

Room Tip: Ask for the Mudhouse :)

A really nice family house with friendly staff and management. You can trust the description / reviews on Trip Advisor. The rooms were fine, but it would have been better with A/C and a fridge (but the fan was also perfect and silent). The pool and the garden was very nice. There was a nice view from the balcony towards the forest. Last but not least I want to stop and spend one or two words on breakfast: Best in Sri Lanka.

We stayed in the lemongrass room which was an upstairs room at the back of the property. Our room had a spacious balcony and a spacious bathroom. The owners' have put a lot of thought into the finishing touches of everything throughout that room and the whole property. The pool was amazing and clean, although we only used this once as the main Marissa Beach is less than a 5 minute ride by tuk tuk. We had one dinner at the spice house, which was an amazing traditional meal.
