“Boutique Charm In Mirissa - Best Value”
Reviewed February 1, 2014

If in Mirissa this is the place to stay. It's beautiful, boutique, has a swimming pool, best authentic food and greatest value for money. Perfect for couples, families, travellers.
It's beautiful surroundings and layout are just across the road from the beach and walk to town. The main beach is a short walk on the main road or cheap tuk tuk drive. Compared to beach accommodation this is definitely preferable because of the quality and value of accommodation. The house grounds grow bananas, mangoes and coca beans. The chef is an experienced Sri Lankan restaurant cook and makes meals decided ad hoc each evening if you want to stay at the house - they are delicious! The rooms are simple but beautiful, clean and new. Most seem to have balconies and lots of space. The couple who run the house are attentive and helpful and keen to talk to guests in any way they can help. The staff are always very friendly. The couple who live on the grounds alongside the wife's parents which has pros and cons. There is an 11pm curfew to be back at the house as the doors are locked and the owners would have to get up for people. This is slightly dampening to any evening freedom outside of the grounds but the couple are adaptable. The owners, a British husband and Sri Lankan wife are charming.

The Spice House is definitely the best place we stayed in Sri Lanka, and it is one of the nicest guesthouses I have ever come across in my travels. Phil and his wife have gone to much work to carve out this small paradise in Mirissa, and it was a very enjoyable experience. The dinners were exquisite- proper Sri Lankan food by their chef, best we tasted. The location is convenient to everything, yet feels very private and secluded. The room we stayed in was very comfortable, and we were surrounded by beautiful views and nature. But the best thing is all the people who work at The Spice House. They do everything to help make your stay unforgettable- always helpful and willing to help organise everything, friendly and lovely. I can't praise this place enough.. everyone should stay.

We stayed there for 3 nights in Lemongrass room. Accommodation consists of very big family house and two houses in the back yard. Owners really did their best in creating beautifull place. Stone floors, big ceilings, roomy bathroom, and big terrace. Room was cleaned every day (very big plus). No hot water is available in the room, but this is not such a big problem, since the weather is +30- +25C.
They also have quite big swimingpool, and sunbeds.
It can be little bit crowded in the breakfast area in the morning, but not such a big problem, you will be seated eventually. You also can have dinner in the house (we didn't).
Accommodation is not on the beach, so it is better to ask staff to arrange tuk tuk if you want to go to the bigger beach, because the road can be busy and also quite dark in the night time.
Staff can also arrange whale watching tour and all kinds of other transportation.
Me and my partner really liked this accommodation despite some points which can be arranged better.
There was a construction going around lemongrass house. I asked the owner if he had another room, because I was not feeling very comfortable with people walking and making lots of noise round the house. He promised they won't be coming next day.
Also there we parents of Wathsala (one of the owners, by the way very nice lady) we living in the same house as we were staying. I really don't mind and also think that Wathsala really takes care of them, but they had completely different another morning and evening schedule, and different ideas about privacy. I do not want to sound very negative and all, and I will recomend this place to everyone, but I also think a bit different view toward guests would be good. Staff did really their best to solve all minor problems, but at some point I was not feeling very welcome. I hope this will help you in the future. In general I really enjoyed my stay!

Firstly thank you for your review.
Sorry that not everything was perfect during your stay with us and sorry for the inconvenience of the building work that was going on - as you mentioned i did stop the work for one of the days that you were with us,some of the work did also involve fitting solar panels so the two garden rooms do now have hot water.
We are also addressing the breakfast situation by adding more tables, you are right it can be an issue when 18 guests all come down to breakfast at the same time.
The privacy issues in the garden house have also been addressed.
Once again thank you for taking the time to write your review.
Best Wishes,

Have you ever thought to get married in an exotic paradise? We did!

At the Spice House Phil & Wathsala organized for us a simple but yet wonderful Poruwa ( traditional Sri Lankan wedding cerimony), exactly as we were dreaming about.

Everything was so perfect: the special location (a gorgeous tropical garden), the overall atmosphere of family feeling, and every small detail, thanks to the magic touch of Wathsala and her family. We even had our "wedding tuk tuk" waiting for us! Definitely the Spice House offered us one of the best day in our life. A big thanks also to all the guests and the staff.

We also spent 4 days in the House and, day by day, you can really feel that is a place built and cared for with love. The food is also very good ( we advice you to take a cooking class).

And dont forget that just outside the gate there is Mirissa: surely the best beach we have ever seen in Sri Lanka. We wish to come back to The Spice House very very soon!

Cheers from Rome!
Maurizio & Isabella

Hi Maurizio & Isabella,
We were so happy to arrange the Poruwa ceremony for you and were very pleased that the day went so well. I hope that your family back in Italy liked all of the photos?
It was an absolute pleasure for us all here to share the special day with you - including all of the other guests! Hopefully it wont be the last blessing we do here or the last time that we see you both?
Wishing you every health & happiness in your new life together.
Lots of Love,
Phil & Wathsala x x

This is a very nice guest house with very friendly owners. We stayed for two nights in the 'Cinnamon' room, which was pleasant and had a nice balcony. There is no air conditioning in the room which at times made it slightly uncomfortable, but the ceiling fan was sufficient most of the time.

We had a cooking lesson on our second night and then ate with the other guests. The lesson was good fun and the food tasted very good. We had booked in advance to be driven to a few places on our way to the airport on the day we checked out. Wathsala's brother took us and he was very friendly and patient (whilst we spent ages in a souvenir shop!) He told us some interesting things about Sri Lanka during the drive and was far better than the professional tour guide we'd hired earlier in our trip!

I'd recommend staying here, Mirissa has a beautiful beach and is worth a stop - especially as it is possible to swim here.

We stayed here for 3 nights last week and really enjoyed our stay. As other reviewers have said, the small beach minutes away is blissful, and main beach easily reached. We stayed in Cinnamon room in the main house and were very happy - large, very clean and comfortable room with lovely large balcony. Good bathroom - great towels! Noise from road was minimal. Included breakfast was very average. However, other guests raved about the evening meals, which we didn't try and is our only regret - but unfortunately communal dining just isn't our thing and we loved our fish dinners on the beach instead! We would certainly recommend this guest house, great for the price.

We were very lucky to be able to spend two nights at the spice house, as they just had a cancellation (so keep trying if they're full!). The house is set in a lovely garden with a nice swimming pool, and with a lot of space for relaxing. Opposite the house is a small bay, which is just like a small piece of your private paradise and great for swimming. From there you can easily walk to the main beach of Mirissa, or you can take a tuktuk for a 2 minutes ride...
We were in the Cardamom room, which is in the main house and has a balcony with view of the garden. Nice big and bright, with a comfortable bathroom and a fan to keep you cool at night. Good value for money. Very relaxed place with extremely friendly owners. Especially Wathsala gave us so many nice tips and helped us with a very good Walewatching trip, made us feel very much at home. Hope to be back some day!
