We stayed here with our kids (12 and 9 years old) for 16 nights and just loved every single day! We have been to Sri Lanka twice before, travelling all over the place, this time we wanted to take it easy and just stay in one place. Fortunately we booked the Spice House early enough, as this place is so popular. Now I know why: Watsala and Phil are warmhearted and funny people, their staff is friendly and helpful and the whole place has a wonderful atmosphere! We met a bunch of great other travellers, sharing stories at the breakfast and dinner table with them. The food was excellent, the rooms stylish and clean and our view from the balcony in the garden was just fantastic. We´d love to come back one day! Thank you Phil and Watsala for a great time!!

Room Tip: All rooms are nice, but we loved Cardamon and Tamarind, as they have a great view in the garden.

As a family of four we stayed at the Spice House for a week whilst sampling all that the surrounding area had to offer. Run by a lovely couple (Phil and Wathsala) they welcome you into their home by bending over backwards to make your stay and time at the Spice House an enjoyable one.

As the main house was full, we stayed in the Mud House at the bottom of the well-kept garden which was a kind of cabin/eco-hut complete with open-air shower and a great veranda for watching the Peacocks, Monkeys, Birds and Turtles in the morning.

One small beach is across the road at the bottom of the driveway and there are others within a short walk or tuk-tuk ride away. Phil was very helpful in booking whale watching tours for us and giving advice on other places of interest. Having said that it was also nice to laze by the pool on some afternoons too.

If you get the chance, stay in for the evening and sample the delicious dinners cooked by their chef each evening; the curries really are fantastic. Other food options are a walk or a tuk-tuk away.

Room Tip: Can't comment on the accommodation as we stayed in the mud-house which is eco-friendly so has fa...

Just about perfect guesthouse to stay in. We returned for 2 more nights the next week! Lovely rooms and welcoming owners. The house and gardens were well kept and gorgeous. We ate their delicious meals every night and someone was always around the common areas to offer us tea or snacks. We really appreciated the pool. We didn't mind the hike to the end of the beach where the beach culture could be found but it was along a busy road, or a rocky beachfront, or a short tuk tuk ride away. Loved meeting other travellers over home-cooked local food & met guests who were spending their entire holiday here.

Unfortunately we only stayed here for one night, but we wished we could have stayed longer. Its a lovely place with a great vibe. Communication prior to our arrival was excellent and Phil and his wife were on hand to help in any way they could during our stay. The rooms, common areas and pool are all great. The food smelt fantastic (unfortunately didnt actually get the chance to eat there). Can't fault the place, lovely hosts and staff, highly recommended

The Spice House is a good base from which to enjoy Mirissa. It's located about 10 min walk from the main beach but this didn't bother us at all as the quality of the accommodation was worth it. We even ended up staying longer than we had planned. We had one of the rooms in the main house and it was very comfortable and clean. Phil and Wathsala were super hosts. Foodwise the breakfast is excellent and we ate a good meal one evening which had been prepared by another guest who was attending a cookery class with the chef! Overall we found this place very relaxing and good value.

We stayed in Mirissa for 4 nights at the end of our 3 week holiday in Sri Lanka which was the perfect ending to a lovely holiday. Phil & Wathsala have a lovely guest house which is also their and their two lovely dog's home. Lots of Phil's photos of his travels from all over the world are on the walls of the hotel built to a good standard a couple of years ago and it is comfortable and clean. It has a lovely swimming pool, large balconies, comfortable beds with mosquito nets, good showers. Their cook is amazing, and I enjoyed a cookery lesson one evening (and got given the recipes to take home and had to promise to practice them once at home!). Phil & Wathsala are great and helped us organise many things during our stay - an awesome massage at Badora spa (highly recommended for a deep tissue massage); transport on to Galle via the lovely Mirissa Hills cinnamon estate where we enjoyed walking through their art collection and a cinnamon tea with a view of the beach and ocean; tuk tuks at decent prices. Nothing was too much trouble, we wished we could have stayed longer. Thank you Phil and Wathsala and the Spice House team.

The Spice House, Mirissa is a beautiful Colonial style guesthouse with its own private swimming pool set in a peaceful, landscaped garden full of tropical flowers, fruits, spices, ponds & hammocks. It is ideally situated only one minute from a beautiful, reef protected bay & 1km from the main bustle of Mirissa beach. The guesthouse is English owned by an experienced traveller and his Sri Lankan Wife which allows us to offer our guests the perfect mix of Western comfort & luxury alongside Sri Lankan charm & service - we like our guests to feel like part of the family. The house is shaded by coconut palms & cinnamon trees to the front while the back is terraced which allows wonderful views over the surrounding jungle. Local wildlife is often seen in our garden with daily visits from monkeys, kingfishers, peacocks, woodpeckers & squirrels.
