Owner description: We are a local family, providing environmental and sustainable whale watching in Mirissa, Sri Lanka since 2008. We are very keen on protecting the whales and also have been doing research about them for many years now. We are very proud that we are recommended in the new Sri Lankan lonely planet and by so many users of tripadvisor. For bookings please send us an email (anytime), give us a call (between 2 pm and 8 pm) or visit our office in Mirissa Harbour (2 pm to 6 pm). Our price is 6000 LKR for adults and 3000 LKR for kids. Small kids (<6 years) are free of charge. A refund of 50% is given if we do not see any whales on the day of your trip. Please help to protect the whales!

Totally worth the early start and there is year-round shake watching, although in July you expect to see fewer whales on average. Very informative and conservation-based approach. Good breakfast is included too. Their stand is on Mirissa beach.

“Raja has an affinity with whales that the other operators don't have, he finds he whales & the others watch for him.”
5 of 5 bubbles Reviewed July 2, 2014

There are many whale watching operators in Mirissa but Raja runs an ethical outfit. Having worked with the whales since he was a child he has a vast knowledge & an uncanny ability to find them - they almost come to him. He cares about the whales passionately & is involved in scientific studies & campaigns to help protect them. Many other operators chase and sickeningly harass whales to try to get better views but he won't get involved in this. He isn't the cheapest - he donates part of the price to the protection program - but he is the best & gives a guarantee that you'll see whales. Even if he calls time early in the whales best intererts, you'll come away feeling that you went with the right guy and with an easy conscience. Highly recommended.

“Childish staff, expensive and not worth it”
2 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 23, 2014

Unless you feel like spending your day on a boat (which is nice but then don't pay that much, you can rent a boat for much less...) This is not worth it. The crew thinks they are god. They are definitely trained to look like professionals, but I wouldn't count on it. We saw some whales from far away. The boat broke down and it took us a few long hours to come back to shore. I believe most of the boast are the same and if you do want to go whale watching Raja is a decent option, but I would skip the whale watching experience altogether.

“Expectations not fulfilled.”
3 of 5 bubbles Reviewed June 6, 2014

I swam with whale sharks in the Philippines and that experience by far made a bigger impression on me. Apart from some very big cargo ships we did not see anything the first 4 hours. At noon we went back and came closer to the coast line. In this area more of the whale watching companies were active and the tension was rising as it was clear there where some whales in the water around the boats. Together with 4 other ships we cruised through the waves when finally we spotted 2 back fins of (what apparently were) blue whales. After 3 seconds, they were gone… 10 minutes later we saw again the back of a blue whale. This one was only 50 meters from the boat.

I know you cannot manipulate wild animals to come close(r) to you, but for me this expedition was a big disappointment. The crew admitted as well it was a very poor day as after 6 hours on the sea we didn’t even saw sperm whales or dolphins. The main reason why this review still receives 3 stars is because of the professionalism and respect of the crew. We received scrambling eggs with toast and at noon some cake with fruit juices. The captain illustrated with nautical maps the routes of the whales and the cargo ships and he really does seem to care about the animals. He claims to be working together with some of the universities and has the permission to get in contact with the whales.

Apart from that, when we got back to land he offered us a new free trip the next day (which we sadly could not join as we were travelling further) and proposed to send us the pictures they shot from the whales. We just had to leave our e-mail addresses => we’ve never received any e-mail…
