Just to second all that has been said about Raja already. Honest, sincere and straight up. He told everyone before we left that it would be a rough sea and that some people would get sick. They encouraged anyone concerned about seasickness to take anti-seasickness tablets as we set off and directed them to the part of the boat that moved the least - downstairs in the centre. A few people did puke and one of the staff was always waiting there once they finished to take away their plastic bag and give them a fresh one and a tissue. That said though, most people including myself were fine even though it was fairly choppy. They said the best thing to do if you're really concerned is to pick up the tablets (they'll tell you which ones) in the pharmacy the day before and then take them at 05:30 on the morning of your trip.

We saw a few whales about 100 metres or so away but the real highlight was when a blue whale came up alongside the boat about 10 metres away! Don't expect breaching whales or to see fins very close up but it's still a great experience.

As everyone says, Raja does seem to be very genuine and respectful when it comes to the whales and certainly appears to try to comply with international guidelines covering whale watching which he describes at the outset. All in all, very pleased with the experience and all for 6,000 rupees!

I don't want to repeat all the very positive comments about Rajah, but they are true. Rajah is a campaigner for the welfare of whales, he is passionate about his love of whales. Other boats may be cheaper, but not by much, Raja is mentioned in documentaries about Mirissa for his work for the benefit of whales. once aboard, tea in a china cup, ginger biscuits, fresh fruit, then a few flying fish, dolphins and then blue whales galore and surprisingly a sperm whale. Rajah and his totally professional crew make you feel welcome and safe from the instant. All speak good English and other languages. Rajah carefully trails whales following the international guidelines, unlike some other boats that roar up to the whale for a good picture causing the whale to dive. (Avoid the black catamaran "Paradise Boat" who scares whales by doing just that). After a consensus was agreed by all the passengers we stayed out for another 1/2 hour quietly following a sperm whale. NB previous comments about being out for ever were apparently with the agreement of 99% of passengers who were lucky to have found a mother blue whale and a calf. It was the 1% that wrote a bad review. After two hours ish we headed for home and were served a pleasant omelette and bread. You do go out 12 miles, it may be choppy, there will be a swell on the sea. We had no problems at all, neither did any fellow passengers on the top deck. There were further maps and explanations to look at during the return journey. We left @7.30 and were back at 11.45 very happy. Later that day at a bar on the beach a big friendly hand shook mine and my wife's and said we had met before. ,beach cricket ? on the beach? No you were on my boat this morning. great guy. PS they send a free tuc tuc to pick you up in Mirissa area. Rajah will email pictures his crew took on the day to you if you give him your email. HIGHLY RECOMMENDED

This was probably the most memorable experience of my Sri Lanka trip last month.
Raja (The Captain) is very professional and also well knowledgeable about whales. He makes sure that the international regulations on whale watching are followed strictly.
As we stepped on the boat, we were served with tea/coffee and some biscuits. Later freshly cut fruits were served. The whale watching session lasted for about 1 hour and we were able to spot many of them along with manta ray fish and numerous dolphins. After the watching session, breakfast was served after asking for preference (I was even asked if I wanted omelette one side fried of both). The best part of a every dish served was that it was prepared on board only. So whatever you will get on board will be absolutely fresh.
I will definitely recommend Raja and the Whales to every whale enthusiast.

This was amazing day. Please go on tour with raja and the whales. They love whales, see and at last tourists. All other companies going to close to animals. We were waiting for them onsee and then the whale come out of see 30 metres away and goes by boat 5 metres away. This was realy reward for us and breathetaking minutes. It is sad to see so many cargo ships on the see between whales. Please eat localy as much as possible.
