“Nice place to relax on beach”
Reviewed March 30, 2014

We enjoyed 4 nights here at end of fast-paced sightseeing trip around Sri Lanka. It was a delightful place to slow down and enjoy the moment (also a convenient base for a whale-watching expedition). Accommodations were simple, clean, and comfortable. Price was right. Food was good-value and excellent (especially the traditional Sri Lankan breakfast option). Restaurant service was friendly, but very slow. I think kitchen could prepare only one order at a time. We relaxed while awaiting arrival of food and enjoyed watching fishermen, surfers, swimmers, diving birds, from tables overlooking Indian Ocean. Hotel staff were helpful in arranging car and driver for trip to Colombo airport. A local jewelry maker offered his wares (nice selection, good prices, easy to pack ) on hotel veranda for a few hours daily. Overall, the Palm Villa provided a lovely culmination to Sri Lankan vacation.

Room Tip: We enjoyed having view of sea from covered porch of our ground-floor room.

We stayed two nights and really liked the location. Hotels is very well situated, at the end of Mirissa beach which leaves it nicely out of the main hotels’ crowd and still close enough to the beach restaurants and the main road.

Based on the reviews, we picked out a room with the garden view – do the same as this is the cheaper and totally OK option, while the sea view rooms have a view to the sea - but through the restaurant so you cannot even leave the door opened.
Nice and totally clean long beach. Perfect for walking and running, sea OK for swimming (bigger waves from time to time).

For a lunch or dinner don’t stay at the hotel, the food here is overpriced (but the breakfasts included in the price are perfect). Choose some other restaurant at the beach or the small restaurant / take away at the main road – prices here are half the prices at the beach and you can get a nice rice&curry, rotti and other stuff.

When leaving for Haputale we took a driver arranged by the hotel to save some time on the road – don’t do this if possible. Because the hotel is more expensive than the average the suppliers think you won a lottery or what. First, the driver arranged for us an extremely expensive ride in the Udu Walawe NP (I bet he got his fair share) and when we paid him in Haputale the agreed price, even we gave him extra 10%, he looked really pissed! I don’t know what he expected – that we will give him 50% more?

So we can recommend the hotel for the location, accommodation and the beach, but eat and arrange your transport elsewhere.

Room Tip: Choose garden view - cheaper and totally OK. Better than to have a view to the restaurant like the s...

We spent two nights at Palm Villa in Mirissa. The place has a good atmosphere and it is situated in a nice and quiet part of the beach. It was quite windy when we were there, with big waves, but the bay by the hotel is a bit sheltered, so the kids could still swim. Would have loved to have a few more nights here!

We stayed at the hotel for 6 nights, the rooms were large, clean and tidy. AC and safe was provided. The hotel is set at the end of Mirissa beach, and it was only a short walk to the bars and restaurants on the beach.

We didn't really use the hotel garden/beach facilities when sunbathing as there was not much access to the beach and could get quite shady at times. It was also a little claustrophobic for us. There was plenty of people using them though.

The breakfast was the best we have had all holiday, however we did eat in the hotel one evening. We found the food bland and overpriced. We had cordon blue chicken, which was an escalope. The food on the beach restaurants is much better and a lot cheaper. We also had lunch which took 1hr to prepare a tuna salad.

Also the cleaner was to persistent, as soon as we opened our door in a morning she wanted to come and clean the room. Which did become irritating, as we couldnt relax, she was there from around 7am.

All in all this hotel was very good value in a great location, I would recommend it, but would advise you to eat all other meals other than your breakfast outside the hotel.

We arrived at the Palm Villa after 2 weeks in country for some long awaited A/C and comfort. When our driver eventually found it (the sign is very small in blue Mediterranean tiles) we were greated by an airy colonial feeling hotel with its own little shaded garden, complete with sun loungers, hammocks and palm trees.

Our room was excellent, light, roomy, cool complete with A/C and fan, and for the first time since arriving in Sri Lanka, a working safe for valuables.

Breakfast was also a great experience (choice of Sri Lankan or pancakes, fruit plate or juice, tea or coffee, bread and jam etc) and our best in Sri Lanka. However this is around where it ended. We ended up with a cleaner who every morning would ask 'do you want your room cleaned' when answering yes you would need to leave your room open as she didnt have a key. And she was constantly asking when we were leaving as though the couldn't wait to get rid of us.

We then ate in the hotel one night and for lunch on check out. The evening meal was awful and expensive, there is fresher and cheaper a 5 minute walk along the beach, seriously do not line this places pockets with your money. My lunch, 'fresh tuna salad' took over an hour to arrive, no interest or urgency from the staff, and when it arrived the 'fresh tuna' was fresh out of a tin.

On the whole the accomodation is good and the hotel is at one end of Mirissa beach so you are away from the hustle and bustle of the beach, which is nice. Also you are around 2 minutes from the beach so not far to walk.

Id only recommend to stay here, dont eat here and avoid the cleaner.

Palm Villa is extremely popular, and with good reason. It occupies the prime location at the southern end of Mirissa beach, around the corner from the little island. The rooms are beautiful, tasteful and well looked-after. All the staff are smiling and friendly, from the Sri Lankan owner Niko Jayasuriya down to the unfailingly helpful young bar staff and waiters, particularly Lhiru, Iresh and Ross - who always greeted me with a cheerful "hello Mr Richard!"
We initially booked for three nights but extended our stay to five, so we got to try three different rooms. First was Room 17, a huge ground-floor family room in the corner of the garden about 20 metres from the sea wall. It had two big double beds and a nice big terrace. Bathroom was nice with a tiled, walk-in shower big enough for two, with a shelf to sit on. It had good water pressure, a fridge and a safe.
The next night we moved into the smaller double Room 1, again sea-facing and possibly in the best spot, five metres from the surf, with a verandah surrounded by little fish ponds and steps down to the tree-shaded dining area and garden. The bathroom was not as good in this room and the drains smelled a bit, so we just kept the bathroom door shut. It also had a safe.
On our last night we were only able to have Room 11, another double which was cheaper and more basic, set back from the sea and facing a small garden. However, it had the best bathroom of the three, with a beautiful tiled shower. There were also some built-in shelves and a curious wardrobe with a titillating mural of two "very friendly" naked ladies, so don't take this room if you have young children!
The garden overlooking the sea has sandy areas and shady corners, hammocks, deck chairs, showers and loungers for sunbathing. Sometimes we barely moved from here all day! There were beautiful plants, squirrels and crows to feed, and occasionally turtles swimming right in front of us, and eagles diving into the sea for fish. Fishing boats and surfers added to the views.
There is a raised The food was great throughout our stay. They offer a set lunch and a set dinner to pre-order if you wish. Sri Lankan breakfast was routinely excellent, and the Western was good too. The restaurant also has an upstairs viewing area which was being used mainly for morning yoga and evening Pilates classes. There are, of course, many other dining options a five-minute walk further along the beach: Surf City (I think) did great fish.
We could happily have stayed at Palm Villa for much longer. If only we had booked well in advance!

We stayed here at the beginning of January and fell in love with it. We had only planned to stay a couple of nights but after a night here we decided to change our plans and stay longer. It is tucked away from the main beach providing a quiet place to stay. The staff here are so wonderful too, my now fiance (who asked me to marry him here :) played many games of cricket with the boys working there. Great location as you can walk to many places to eat, definitely not one to be missed.
