“Great sea view and nice staff”
Reviewed December 4, 2011

We loved our time at palm villa. Great location with lovely view right to the beautiful blue water. Plenty of places to sit and read a book or enjoy the sunset. The rooms are clean. The staff were helpful. One staff member got up at 6am to get us breakfast before we went whale watching. We had a very relaxing time.

The location, the rooms, the sea views are great and the GH seems to be full all the times.
However, the rooms rates start at 3500Rp, which is expensive for the country, and moreover than there is not hot water nor AC (only fan) and the owners are not so welcoming nor nice.
To add that for the breakfeast, we waited more than one hour to be served as we only ordered pancakes.

The hotel is very well situated in front of the sea. The rooms are clean, comfortable and well decorated, helpful staff. The food is good and breakfast included. Double room was 4000 sri lankan rps.
You can swim and do snorking in front of the small rock island you'll see lot of colourful fishes. The sunset is amazing, very romantic place.
Advise : Bring few games to play in the rainy time ...

Room Tip: Rooms on the sea side are nice.

We stayed at Palm Villa on our honeymoon (in july.. sorry so late writing review) and it was absolutely perfect. It is the best spot in mirissa as its on a headland with beach either side.. waves on one side and a calmer bay for swimming on the other. We watched a beautiful turtle swimming in the bay while we ate our breakfast, so peaceful (and delicious food). Very friendly and helpful staff. Room was lovely and facing out to see with lovely view straight out the door. Was always kept spotless.
Its only a few minutes walk up the beautiful beach if you want dinner somewhere else (or drinks)... but i can safely say that we had some of the best curries we've ever had in our lives for dinner here so you probably won't need to (beetroot curry was awesome, dal the best ever!!).
Its a really peaceful place and we are already saving to go back. Thankyou to all the staff for making our stay so perfect!

Room Tip: rooms on left side facing the sea are the biggest and best (worth paying little bit more for)

When you enter a new hotel room the first thing you check is usually the bed. Is it clean?

In the case of Palm Villa, we were not quite sure because of the old, multicolored sheets. They probably were washed though (I hope), but you really do not want to have any doubts about the cleanliness of where you are going to sleep.

Here are a few things which where not quite ideal

1. The bed is not too comfortable and has stale smelling sheets
2. Your bed pillow smells and is hard as a rock - you will need a massage next day
3. The bed is too short if you are 1.87m like me. Your feet will rest on the hard wooden frame and free air
4. There is no A/C and the fans are not really the silent type
5. No bedlights
6. The bathroom has a humid, stale smell and after a day it was full of sand and mud
7. Our room was not cleaned or serviced during our two day stay
8. The staff does not really seem to care about anything. Everytime we ordered food they took our order with a disappointed look and a shoulder shrug.
9. We had breakfast only, which was nothing to write home about.
10. The room was overpriced. We paid 7.000 for a family room. Right next door, double rooms are 3.500 and rooms down to 1500 can be found on the main beach.
11. Our room got invaded by a myriad of critters and insects, moths, mosquitoes, lizards, ants etc.

Good things about Palm Villa

1. The location is very good. You can go left to a little bay and do snorkeling. Or go right to the main bay and catch great waves for surfing.
2. Mirissa beach is the best of all the beaches we visited during our 3 week stay. Water and beach is clean.
3. The Palm Villa owner is really friendly.
4. The Tuk-Tuk driver Nilanka is very well connected and the only staff who actually seems to care about the guests. Talk to him about what to do and tours.

If you are used to cheap, basic guesthouses and dont mind a little smell, dirt and company in the form of insects and critters then that may explain why Palm Villa has received some 5 star reviews.

Palm Villa received an "our Pick" recommendation in the Sri Lanka lonely planet guide so a lot of the guests will be the usual "LP Lemmings" following the bible around SE Asia. And as the owner says, "I am turning away 50 guests a day in season". I guess if you have a LP recommendation like that you do not really need to do much about your hotel which is a shame.

Beach Tip: Mirissa beach is absolutely awesome. You can rent boogie boards at the two restaurants on the beach or borrow from the friendly owner at Palm Villa. We ate 5 meals at the "Mirissa Beach Wadiya Restaurant" located right on the beach. Fantastic rice and curry, prawn ginger and sweet and sour ginger prawns. Good service and super location right on the sand. Try it.

If you are looking for the famous Roti Lady Gaiana who used to have a shop across from the Palm Villa, she has now moved. She now runs her "restaurant" from her home, about a 2 minute tuk-tuk ride away. Nilanka can take you. If you want to go to a Batik factory or buy jewelry at a factory, he is also your man for the job.

Me and my boyfriend, stayed here for new year 2010. We loved it, such a nice place and people! So when our family arrived we took them here again a few weeks later, and once again we had the best time and accomodation in Sir Lanka for our stay. Thank you.

Lovely cool rooms with ocean views. Outdoor furniture in front of the rooms makes a lovely spot in the afternoon for a cup of tea delivered by the wonderful staff at Palm Villa.

Breakfast served in the gardens each morning was very good and I never got tired of the beautiful view.

It's quieter around this side of Mirissa and I preferred that. Its an easy walk around to the restaurants along the beach.

The rooms are clean and the bathroom was very nicely decorated.

I would definitely stay here again.
