We stayed here for four days and generally had a lovely time. The location is absolutely perfect, it's right on the beach and was simply idyllic.

However, what brings the rating of this hotel down are a number of things. Firstly, the room is fine and includes air con, the furniture is a little old and broken in some places, the bed was comfortable but the bathroom was damp, smelly and the shower cubicle musty and full of mould! So much so that my son refused to shower in it! The mosquito net was huge and covered the bed and an additional one but had plasters over the holes! The chairs on the balcony were marked and looked like they had been taken out of a seventies furniture showroom, they reminded me of my nan's front room 20 + years ago!

Our package was half board and generally the food was fine. The hotel would benefit from covering the food though as the flies tended to land on the open food. The staff were very demotivated and at times came across as rude. The only time I saw a change was the day before we left, knowing our stay was almost over and there may be a tip in it for them, they became very attentive and helpful! The Manager speaks very little English and is rude - his manner towards us remained the same even when we settled the bill. You would normally expect to be asked had you enjoyed your stay and a thanks for coming, but no such luck!

The pool is fine but small and again tired, it needs maintenance as the lights aren't working and the wires are hanging out, also some of the tiles are cracked.

I think this hotel professes to be a four star, but I would tend to disagree and feel it's more a three star which needs work. The staff is all male and I think it would benefit from a female eye.

Room Tip: Shop around before choosing this, if you get a good deal, go for it.

Firstly I really wanted to love this place. Beautiful location, lovely pool, great grounds. But unfortunately a few things let it down. The air conditioned family bungalow was nice, simple, fine, But the air conditioner only upstairs simply did not cool the bottom level. First world problem sure but I did book for air con for a family and unless we all squeeze into one bed not everyone is getting it! And upstairs will freeze before downstairs cools down. A tiny ceiling mounted fan downstairs didn't do much. And honestly the bathroom was pretty terrible. Certainly not the worst bathroom I've come across in Asia but it was dark, smelt like urine and the nozzle sprayed all over the room, which meant sloshing about in water which didn't drain away. If you are ok with these things, and the packaged tour feeling at dinner it's fine and we had a lovely play on the beach.

This probably won't apply to most travelers as they are likely to be non-Sri Lankan and wouldn't care about what i write next.
I'm writing from the point of view of a Sri Lankan patron to this hotel during the New Years holidays. We had friends coming to Sri Lanka from the US and other countries, and the room bookings were done by those who were coming to Sri Lanka- for reasons i will mention further below.
The reaction of the management staff was quite negative when they saw that there were Sri Lankans in this group of 12. Mirissa has always been known to filter out local (sri lankan) holidaymakers as they don't want to 'spoil' the experience for foriegn visitors, it is said.
But we experienced first hand what the management wanted to do to make sure we were not comfortable. As there was a non-optional New Years dinner party at the hotel (you had to agree to pay for it if you wanted the 31st room bookings) the hotel garden premises were converted to dining tables for those staying at the hotel. The hotel event manager initially refused to set up tables for our party because of the presence of locals- he even tried to dissuade the waiters and staff from serving us (who thankfully, ignored his instructions). This mind you, after we had already paid up for the New Years dinner...
The same sort of unnecessary fretting was done during most visits to the hotel restaurant.
It's a real pity because the hotel has a great location on a lovely beach, but the experience was so very disappointing...and really is a reflection of the owners and management. That's why there is no rating of the hotel amenities.
In the end, not sure what the right word is for a person who despises his own kind.

We turned up as walk-in guests rather than pre-booked & the manager seemed unconcerned whether we stayed or not which was a bad sign but as it was getting late we agreed to stay for one night half board. Paradise Beach Club, as others have said is both good & bad.

On the plus side, the location is brilliant, right on the beach, our first floor deluxe room had a view to die for. It was clean & all the amenities & the air-con worked, on that basis we extended our stay to 3 nights. I found the food perfectly acceptable with a varied theme, BBQ, wok-night etc, breakfast was quite good but without much Sri Lankan influence. That said, if you like fresh fish, the restaurants on the beach were fabulous, we had several lunches there, and at the weekend they were pretty busy.

Now the minus points, it was overpriced for what it is & I could live without the all night boom-boom music from along the beach which was still going at 10am on Sunday but the overwhelming image I have is of rude managers who regarded us guests as an inconvenience to be tolerated. Even when we came to pay, the surly accounts man didn't even acknowledge us, I had to ask if the transaction was complete, the rest of the cleaning & waiting staff seemed fine.

A smile costs nothing, these managers need to realise that they are in the hospitality business.

Room Tip: Cabanas looked cramped & hot with just a fan, second floor deluxe rooms had the best views

Great setting on the beach, with nice rooms (a/c) and bathrooms – it is probably the best bet in the area. The dinner buffet was great but the lunch time service in the restaurant was truly awful and it was the only place in Sri Lanka where we found that the staff weren’t that friendly. Best bet for lunch or drinks is to walk onto the beach, turn right and walk along to some of the bars and restaurants at the end of the beach – they were great.

While I got the impression that most guests at the hotel where adequately satisfied I would guess it is because 'they knew no better'. Being an ex-pat Sri Lankan resident and having stayed in many Sri Lankan hotels across the south coast, I can assure any prospective guests reading this review that this hotel is vastly overpriced for what it offers. We went for the super-deluxe room at 17,000 rupees, which is a large sum in Sri Lanka. Most good 'deluxe' hotels on the south coast rarely go over 10,000 rupees. On seeing the room, I immediately expressed dissatisfaction. When I asked what made it a 'super deluxe room', apart from more tiles on the floor (slightly bigger space), all they could come up with is that it had a kettle and some tea bags! (I have stayed in guest houses at 2,000 rupees a night which have this). We had originally booked for three nights, and as 'dinner' was included, we thought we would stick the first night out. Dinner was a further disappointment, with a very unpleasant buffet.....you know a Sri Lankan hotel is not working when even their Sri Lankan curries are not good! As I said though, all other guests were first time travelers to the country and although I overhead a number of complaints at the desk from guests I got the feeling that most guests just accepted what they had booked online and from overseas. It was quite clear from the attitude of the managers in the hotel, that they too realised they had a 'captured overseas market' with their guests, as they appeared completely uninterested in ours or others concerns and seemed to have a good 'titter' behind our backs that we were not happy. While deciding on our options we inquired at a couple of guest houses on the same beach regarding their availability and price, and at 4,000 rupees a night they were happy to offer bed and breakfast in air-con rooms. If you want a great beach to stay the day on, then do go to Mirissa as it is beautiful. Do not make the mistake of staying the night though at Paradise Beach Club. I can assure you there is much better value all around. We left after the first night and subsequently went to a far better hotel and saved ourselves enough money for massages, plenty of drinks and all our food costs, plus enough money left over to buy some nice take home presents from the local shops.

We stayed one night at the Paradise Beach Club in a family bungalow. The location is excellent (right on the beach) and Mirissa beach is very pleasant. Unfortunately the hotel is dated and the service is poor. The food was OK.
