“Stylish and clean”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed March 19, 2012

This hotel was very stylish and nicely furbished. The staff were very helpful and as the hotel was quite small you get the full attention when needed. The food was really great, we had a big lobster for supper, served in the garden with litten candles. There is a nice pool and the rooms are very spacious.
The hotel was right by the beach, but there was a fence you had to pass. The beach was nice, but if you are here you should definitely also go to Mirissa beach (take a cab/tuktuk it iw very close). Walking down the beach there are some surfing schools where you can rent boards and take lessons. Highly recommended! We also went on whale safari in Mirissa, and the organizers picked us up by the hotel (we went with Raja and the Whales which is the only one I can recommend based on seeing how the others behaved around the whales).

I have to agree with a number of other reviewers that this could be a very good hotel, but does not quite make it.

Nice big modern rooms, good layout, nice location. But there are countless small irritations:

Vague smell of mould and damp cement everywhere. Very slight, but noticeable.

No WiFi. Surprising in a new hotel of this quality. Some employees very helpful and friendly. Sanita is a gem. Others surly and grumpy.

Long waits for the guard to open the gate to admit cars, hence people sound their horns. Not nice when sleeping.

The restaurant is a puzzle. Some of the food is terrific. Absolutely first class. Then next day it is in edible junk. Then it's good again. (?)

Breakfast trays left outside rooms are sometimes still there in the evening. At other times they are taken instantly.

Could be very nice, but they need to take it up a level.

Last December(2011) we stayed at the Mandara boutique resort.
while we paid for a room with Jacuzzi, I am disappointed to say the least that the Jacuzzi was not working through our stay . Despite our complaint the hotel staff was unable to fix it.

There were other things that were disappointing:

Upon arrival I was offered a fruit drink which i declined and instead requested for a glass of water. As I waited at the reception for my luggage to be carried to the room, I was promptly served with a bill for the water. It was only after I expressed my disapproval of it that it was cancelled.

Upon checking into the room, as I turned the knob of the bathroom door to open it, it came undone into my hands.

Soon upon checking into the room, as i tried to pull up the blinds, i realized that one of the blinds was not functioning and needed a small repair.

There was no kettle, tea/coffee provided in the room. (this is a basic amenity which is provided by even very small lodge.

we were very disappointed our stay and never recommend for any others.bad staff and the management.

Room Tip: Better to avoid this hotel.not worth for money.

The Mandara Resort is a good, quite hotel, with a great staff. They are all very friendly and helpful, but the hotel has 3 main things against it:
1) It is located off the main tourism area. The beach is not as beautiful and is therefore empty. The Mirissa Beach area is about 10 minutes away. There are several nice hotels there where you'd rather stay if you want a better beach, more food options, and more action.
2) The value for money just isn't there! It costs 250$/night and we just didn't understand why. The rooms are clean, yes .. but there is nothing spectacular about the resort. Even the whale watching trips they offer are not the best. If you are visiting - go with Raja and the Whale - it is fantastic!
3) Food wise there aren't too many options. They have 1 restaurant at the facility, but you cannot step out and get variety. The hotel is located on a narrow street (which you can barely spot from the main road) so walking out and finding food is near impossible.

Overall, the hotel is functional so I can't give it a terrible review. If it were 30% the cost it would be worth it. If I were to go back to Mirissa, I'd rather stay at Mirissa Beach (for example Paradise Hotel).

We stayed for five nights. The service is excellent. the location is amazing - wonderful beach, walking distance from Walligama surfing point and 5 minutes tok-tok ride to Mirissa beach. The hotel is small (20 rooms) which is great, we had a suite which was lovely - very large, huge bathroom (strangely enough larger then the room itself). Food - good, not great, but the best was they were very helpful towards the kids and prepared specially for them international course (French fires, chicken breast...). The staff are really great, small hotel so you get to know them all. Two issues we had: we ordered a suite - which in this case was just a large room with two 1.5 beds - no other place for the kids. We asked for an extra bed and so my wife and I slept on one bed, our daughter on the near by, and my son on the extra bed. So the main issue we didn't have privacy. The only solution is to hire two rooms (Don't know about connecting rooms). We also had a hot water issue- it was finished after one shower. Talking to the staff didn't help. after talking to the manager the problem was solved. All by all it was great and we definitely plan to come back. Please note- the room is not completely darkened by the white semi-transparent shades. Wi-FI is available only on the lobby area, and it's pretty lame.

The hotel building from the road does not look good, more like a detention centre however, looks can be deceptive! Enter the grounds and you will be met by friendly staff. We had two rooms, one upstairs, one downstairs with the shower in the garden!!! Small plunge pool which we did not use. Rooms are good but look "unfinished" - concrete floors looking as though they are awaiting tiling!!
Nice swimming pool and beach however, main beach about 2km away is much better.
