“Great trip. Great people. Great Value.”
Reviewed May 25, 2013

This was a much needed vacation. Traveled May 16-23, 2013: weather was great and resort was not busy. First, the hotel (room, staff and grounds) were great. The food was good, but there could have been more variety. The rooms were a little outdated, but clean. There were pigs and cows on the hotel grounds. They kept to themselves and ate grass! It was kind of cute, but some people may not like that sort of thing. Every member of the staff was pleasant and helpful. There were some language barriers at points. But overall not hindering on my stay or enjoyment.

I would recommend this resort to friends and family. And I will be returning for sure.

Room Tip: Stayed in the Cabana...Try to get a room on the top floor (there are only two floors)

This was my second time to Marea del Portillo, and I enjoyed it as much as the first (awfully glad I missed the pile of complainers who were there the week before I was. You can read their reviews below, but I will address some of their concerns here).

This is a small secluded cuban run resort in a rural province, approximately 1.5 hours bus ride from the airport. The scenery is gorgeous. The mountains rise around the resort and the sea. If you stay at the smaller resort, you will be right on the beach. The larger one, which is only open during the busy season, is also lovely, but is a little farther up the mountain. The beach is dark sand with some gentle slopes and some steeper slopes. The surf is usually gentle; sometimes a bit more boisterous, but never dangerous. Sometimes the water gets churned up with a few weeds during very windy times. There are kayaks, a catamaran, floatation devices available. I hear the diving is very good, but I did not go.

The resort is very quiet, at least in my opinion. I like going in the off-season because it is even quieter. During this particular week, there were approximately 100 people there, which was perfect. The music at the pool doesn't start until 10 am, and even then, is not as loud as other resorts I have been to. The beach is very peaceful. Chairs at both the pool and beach were plentiful and there is none of this self-centred 'wake up at 6 am to reserve your chair' BS that you see at other resorts.

The rooms are basic and really fine. Again, very quiet. I'm not sure what all the hullaballoo is about. The air conditioning works. The TV works. The showers were great, and I had hot water all the time. I was on the lower level, right on the beach. I could pull my chair outside in the evening and just sit and listen to the waves. I fell asleep every night to the sound of the sea. Beautiful. You don't get that at a 5 star resort unless you pay big dollars, and even then you usually don't get it. I'm honestly not sure why people would complain.

The food is actually the best I have ever had in Cuba. I know that doesn't say alot :). Every lunch and dinner there were ingredients for salads, rice, potatoes, fruit, different kinds of vegetables, beans, one or two stews, grilled fish or chicken. It was healthy and fine. I actually left feeling much better than when I arrived precisely because I was eating healthy, traditional home cooked food. Breakfast was probably the most challenging meal in terms of variety. I usually had an omelette, toast and fruit.

Nightlife was minimal, which I appreciated.

I rented a car and had no trouble with the company. In fact, they were kind and accommodating, and honest.

The staff are wonderful people. Gentle, kind, respectful and more than willing to go out of their way to help you. Please treat them with the same kind of respect.

I also enjoyed my travelling companions very much: unpretentious, kind and respectful, I think we were the perfect folks to go to a place like this.

So, things I would recommend:
- the VIP package is good value...yes, it did seem like some of the promised things were not available or not exactly as advertised. Even still, I think it is good value.
- the basic rooms are more than adequate
- go to the Mirador restaurant, or another restaurant in one of the towns or villages
- wander around and meet local people
- the Punta Piedra section is 5 kms away, and transportation can be hard. It is very very small, more suitable for adventurous people who like extreme privacy. Be careful about booking this section by mistake unless this is what you are looking for.
- if you rent a car, try to do the drive to Santiago as it is spectacular, but be aware...you must have some courage and gumption, and a 4 wheel drive (the road was washed out by hurricane sandy)

Room Tip: I find the standard rooms at the smaller seaside resort are more than adequate for my needs. They al...

I am answering the negative reviews of Marea del Portillo. I was upset to hear how this hotel is in off season.I have no reason to dispute these reviews as I went in April just before they closed the Farallon section and opened the Marea del Portillo to the locals
I had bar none the best holiday of my life. I stumbled on it looking for a cheaper place.
The rural qualities made up my mind.It is not 4 or 5 star but when I was there the rooms were cleaned and restocked with towels every day. The staff was great . Between the 2 hotels the selection of food was great . Quality not excellent but very good. There was no obvious prostitution going on. There were a couple of Cuban Canadian couples but nothing out of line.
Entertainment every night .No line ups for anything
There was a lack of dancing for us .I guess due to older age group but I missed that
I totally agree Sunwing should be upfront about the closures etc
Look at other reviews done during higher season to have a balanced picture
It is a very good deal at these times
I enjoyed the other tourists I met. The local people I got to know . The VIP deal is really worth it
The quiet rural location was a throw back in time and decompressed all my tension
Try another time of year is what I suggest

Never been to Cuba. People scared me about the food but I was pleasantly surprised. The food was bland and not much variety from lunch to dinner or day to day but everything tasted good and there was more than enough to eat. If you're looking to party don't go here in the off season- disco was not open- but they had a live band and performers every nite. The staff were wonderful, especially the bartenders and life guards. They had kayaks and paddle boats available and you can go on a short hike to find 2 private beaches. I went for the SCUBA DIVING. Esphaldo and the other dive shop workers were amazing! So far some of the best diving I've found in the carrebean. Overall tones of fun, low key, quiet resort. Oh, and great horseback riding.

We are regular visitors to Cuba. We love the country and the people and it is very reasonably priced. Be warned that you can find better value for your dollar in Cuba than this resort. I believe that this resort is only available through Sunwing. The Sunwing brochure in my opinion is false advertising. Upon return, we contacted Sunwing and after three months received a response that they had investigated and found that (and I quote) “this hotel has consistently proven to be in our accordance with our brochure description.” There letter states that any hotel can experience technical difficulties. You be the judge if the following points are technical difficulties. All the following points were verified with the Sunwing representative that lives at the resort.

1.) Advertises aqua trykes-no aqua trykes (rep had no idea what we were even talking about)
2.) Advertises mini-golf – concrete mini-golf is all broken up and over run with vegetation. (hasn’t been usable in years... see pictures attached)
3.) Advertises pedal boat – no pedal boats are available at the resort. We were told if we wanted to use a pedal boat we should take the day trip to Cayo Blanco island because they have a pedal boat.
4.) Advertises 3 a la carte restaurants but they have only ever had 2 according to the Sunwing rep.

We paid for the VIP package which was also not as described.

1.) Advertises express reservation at the a la carte restaurants. It was up to us to find the person at the restaurant between 2 and 4pm. It took 2 days to find this person. Other VIP clients told us that they couldn’t get reservations because they were told returning guests get priority and now they were booked.
2.) Advertises VIP gala dinner with lobster and wine. The Sunwing rep told us that there was no VIP gala but they would give us a voucher to get a lobster tail with our lunch if we took the day trip to Cayo Blanco island.
3.) Advertises a Lagoon tour and a sunset tour. The resort has combined these two. You now get a sunset tour in the lagoon.

There were other issues which we experienced but you get what you pay for. I realise that this a value vacation. This is the first time I have been disappointed with a vacation. If Sunwing had represented this property accurately, I would not even be complaining. I truly feel that Sunwing is committing fraud, especially, when they choose to continue to advertise this resort falsely. After all we rely on the trip provider to clearly (and truthfully) describe what the resort offers. It has been 3 months since I first complained to Sunwing and to this day the above mentioned items are advertised in their brochure. According to their letter to me they feel the resort is in accordance to the brochure.
Also be aware that this resort is made up of three separate hotels. If you pay for the Superior room you will stay in the newer hotel (Farallon) which is nice but it is a 15 minute walk to the other hotel. Some of the amenities are only available in the older hotel (Marea del Portillo). I would not consider this a family resort. When we were there about 80% of the guests were seniors and they seemed to be regular returning guests. It is a good resort to relax but there is very little for children to do. Even the pool tables have signs that the kids are not allowed to use them.

Seasoned traveler, traveled all over the world for work and vacations. By no means was I coming to this resort for 5 star amenities food or decor and I have a wide spectrum of interest's to base this review on. For the price of what we paid to come here and what I expected in return.

FAIL:
Sunwing.....i know it's not the hotel's/employees fault per say, but someone has to ante up and fix this or make the consumer more aware of how there booking at this resort. Basically we had booked a room at the Farallon section 5 to 7 days earlier through sunwing. 2 days prior to leaving Sunwing called and said this hotel "that we researched and booked" was not available. Going to upgrade us to the Marea beachfront cabana room down the hill. "Upgrade" what a loose term this means on this property. Walked to the other property and feel kinda "jipped" as we wanted the view more so then what they called beachfront. Obviously the Farallon is the newer, nicer resort. Bigger Pool, swim up bar, amazing view all of which why we choose this resort and not the other as they were listed at the same price.

Sunwing only choice to us for the inconvenience 2 days prior to leaving was offering a full refund. Or book another sunwing stay but with no help from them to find a similarly priced resort. We had all ready booked time off our respective jobs so re-booking vacation time was not going to be possible. So the other option we explored as well. Funny how "ALL" the other sunwing resorts the price was close to $300 pp more to change to a different resort and it would have been in whole other part of Cuba. " Not happening." So sunwing get's a big "FAIL" and shame on them for continuing to offer this resort to consumers, online when they well knew it was closing up.

Fail: The motor scooter rental/ car rental. Don't do it, the manager is a confrontational scammer. Basically was rented a scooter that died on us spark plug/carberator issue. Was lucky enough to get the scooter back to the resort. They basically said that's your problem we will give you another scooter for 2 more hours, take it or leave it. Left it. Got 2 hrs back in pesos $3/hr but would never do business with that outfit again. If you value your safety don't rent these things. If something major happens your not going to get any action or help from this operation.

One Thumb Up
Accommodation: Old dated, room. Beds like the ones in your cottage. Pillows are a joke. AC worked great. No issues with water minus the ghetto shower head but we made do.
Food: I love carb's, so pasta and omelettes and bread right up my ally. But lacked variety at the buffet. Same staples for every meal. The meals at cayo blanco, "white sand beach" are worth the ride out to the island, best food you will see all week if you stay at the resort.

Snack Bar: was okay, burgers good, ran out of fries some days and late night consisted of pre-made ham and cheese sandwiches, that's it, no room service.

Fishing and Sunset Boat Excursion: Both fun, but the "fishing aspect" is them trolling 3 lines behind the boat as they drive to Cayo Blanco. Plus a 1 hr boat ride in a circle, once again trolling as we go. Caught 2 tuna. Save the 45 bucks and just make friends with the guys who run the boat. Give them money directly ;o) As I know people were just hoping on this boat without purchasing the fishing excursion part just to get to Cayo Blanco Island,

Two Thumbs Up
The Beach, sun and weather: Its Cuba, 30C+ everyday. Rained one night the whole week.
Shout out to the people who we met at this resort. I'll just reference cities you all know who you are. Fort Erie, Welland, Peterborough girls, Niagara Falls,Belleville, and Sudbury. Thanks for a great time and we wish you all the best.
Scenery and people: South east part of the island. Some elevation change makes for a nice backdrop. Sunset and sunrise are cool times of the day.
Service with a smile, all workers at hotel were pleasant and many spoke very decent English.

Overall had a fun relaxing week in the sun. Not a party resort, everyone in bed by 1230. Don't plan to be back unless the price was right. As I like to vacation in different spots. Don't let sunwing screw you on this property and for that reason I would go somewhere else to avoid the hassle. Better beaches and hotels for the price.

I just hate getting scammed. Every single summer the superior part of this resort closes and Sunwing knows this but they continue to sell superior rooms at a superior price. So I paid over a hundred dollars more to be in the superior section and was then messaged a week before my trip that I was being "upgraded" to a cabana which they knew was an all out LIE (as did I) and I was downgraded.
I really don't feel like writing more as I hate being lied to.
DON'T PAY FOR THE SUPERIOR SECTION !!!
