“Best 3 star in Cuba in my opinion”
Reviewed January 19, 2013

Since I'm using my phone brevity reigns.

This is my 2nd time here. 2008 was my initial trip.

It's a clean, safe isolated resort complex with a great volcanic ash beach and cove.

There's plenty of decent food between the two resorts.

Staff are friendly and communicate well.

No overt paid relationships are visible. Resort is family friendly.

To summarize, Marea is my now my desired resort when traveling with my family.

This hotel is great place to relax and enjoy some rays on the beach or around the pool. It is very clean and well maintained and is part of a 2 hotel complex the Faralon is its sister hotel. A lot of optional tours at reasonable price are available. Do not believe the white sand beach in the brochure it is on a private island reached free if you are booked VIP or 30 dollars a day as an option. The beach at the hotel is a grey very fine volcanic sand the beach is cleaned daily and lots of chairs available.the fresh water pool is clean and warm and again lots of lounges and tables available with a bar and snack bar beside it. The food is varied and hot and with soup and salads daily including salads at all meals .The wait staff are super friendly and the food and desserts are all good including ice cream daily.looking out at the mountains to the north and being able to horseback riding to the summit of several peaks is a thrill. a river tour on horse back with swimming in a pool below a waterfall is great. a lot of seniors use this resort and bikes and mopeds as well as rental cars are also available. A good value for the dollar and very relaxing place to stay.

Room Tip: Almost all rooms are ocean view so only the Faralon site has mountain view rooms if you choose

There were many good things about this resort. It was very clean and well maintained. The setting was gorgeous, very natural and not over manicured, set amidst the mountains. The beach, although not the white sands and azure blue waters of travel brochures, was large, breezy and the waves were amazing! I have never spent so much time in salt water. We were always able to get a spot on the beach, right outside our cabana every day. Rooms were pretty typical but slept like a baby. The not so good things: most of the staff were not very friendly, which is shocking for Cuba. The food got very repetitive and my boyfriend almost lost his marbles over it. Also, the Sunwing reps were useless. We bought the cabana VIP package and didn't even get half of what we were supposed to. It was almost impossible to get straight answers, or answers period from anyone.
But we went to relax, and relax we did! Best weather, great beach, and an overall good time had by all.

Room Tip: If possible get a cabana facing the beach. Fell asleep to the crashing waves outside the room.

This resort is a far cry from the 5 star resorts in Mexico and DR. However I knew that coming in, but was still disappointed with a few things.

Resort Site: Located in a very picturesque rural part of Cuba with spectacular mountain views. The resort itself is clean, but not manicured as other high end facilties are. It is kept up in a more natural manner.

Food: Very basic, average at best. Fish excellent. Lack of selection specially for breakfast. In one week there I only saw three types of fruits: Star Fruit, Oranges/Grapefruit, and Pineapple.

Pasta is bad with a very bland sauce. Breakfast is OK, but meals lack variety and selection.

Customer Service: Fair, but a far cry from other sites and certainly not what I expected. The waiting staff appeared to be more interested in clearing off tables than in providing us with coffee, refills, and water.

Trips: Trip to Cayo Blanco was good with a great lunch, but staff are not timely and often change plans without informing customers. Chamber maid was great!

Normally staying at 4 or 5 star hotels, we decided to be adventurous and book in southern Cuba where resorts are 3 star at the most. A few years ago, I spent New Year's in Varadaro and it was COLD. So, we opted out for the warmer southern region of Cuba. The weather was Excellent, The resort could be best described as a ranch on the ocean with a backdrop of mountains. We stayed in the cabanas which we were told is better than the rooms. The cabanas are large and clean with a mish mash of furniture but comfortable. High ceilings and windows on two sides and three beds in the room. The extra beds came in handy for our luggage. The washroom was recently renovated, clean and adequate. We had VIP status so we had a fridge in our room that was stocked upon arrival. After that we had to visit the store to purchase cans of beer and refill our water bottles.

The VIP status entitles you to use the facilities and dine at the nearby sister hotel high from the ocean perched on a hill overlooking the mountains and ocean. You can reach this hotel by beach if you are prepared to walk up several stairs from the beach to the hotel or there is a road that is safe to walk on and quite scenic with horses alongside the road feeding and resting. There are also hotel shuttles back and forth ( Don't forge to tip the driver.). We dined mainly at this hotel as we found the views relaxing and the variety of food better. We loved dining all fresco on the terrace. There is an al fresco Cuban restaurant at this hotel which has a fixed menu. It was good but we were hoping for more of a traditional Cuban fare having recently visited Congo Bongo in Florida. It was more of a North American style meal with soup, entree (we had chicken which was good), and ice cream for desert. Our hotel had a Seafood Restaurant which was very tiny and had one waitress. There is no menu and when we went we were asked if we wanted beef, chicken or shrimp which was strange if you are a seafood restaurant. We opted for the shrimp which was delicious. The reservations are a little difficult to get for both restaurants. You have to visit each restaurant between the hours of two and five to book.

Now about the buffets! Cuba doesn't have a lot of spices so pasta is out! What is pasta without garlic. If you can be creative, there are lots of good choices. It takes a little work but we mastered our meals there. The fish is excellent. Cubans know how to cook fish. The yellow rice is excellent. There was quite a bit of fresh veggies and lettuce for salads as well. We basically stuck to a lot of fish, seafood and veggies with rice. The eggplant was excellent although my s.o. didn't care for it. It was almost like an eggplant Parmesan minus the cheese. Try a bit of everything and then you can plan a healthy diet around that as the food doesn't differ much daily. One exception is New Year's Eve and New Year's Day! The food was overwhelming! That's why this time of year is more costly but you get more! Rabbit, roasted pig, roasted turkey, lamb, calamari, shrimp, prawns, and on and on. Amazing and delicious! Cuba is not known for its food but if you go for New Year's, you will reconsider and there are no holds barred on this holiday!

We really enjoyed a trip to an island where we had lobster on the beach. The food was excellent there and cooked on an open fire.

The only negatives were the sand fleas which I am allergic too. I went through a new bottle of Benydryl there but didn't have to use an epipen. My boyfriend is not allergic but had lots of bites and did take a Benydryl or so. The other thing was that staff were giving us different answers to many different issues. Eg. At the larger hotel during a show we were told that the New Year's Eve celebration and show would be there. A lot of guests sat waiting for the show on New Years with resort staff walking by and saying nothing. We decided to go back to our hotel and found the show was at our hotel! As well lots of confusion for reservations for dinner on New Year's Eve when there was no need to make them! The customer service could be much improved by ensuring consistency in communications. As well the sunset cruise was cancelled and we did not find out until we had walked over, found no one there and then went to the other hotel where staff told us it had been cancelled. Would have been nice if they notified us in our room and/or put us signs in the lobby of our hotel.

This is a rural vacation and there is a strong country feeling there since the airport is one and one half hours away. The closest village is Media de Luna which is at least a 45 minute drive. Bring books to read and be prepared to leave feeling refreshed and relaxed! Don't stress about the lack of customer service and being on time and you should enjoy!

During my stay at Marea we had chicken, turkey, beef (made 3 different ways), rabbit, squid, swordfish, grouper, snapper, goat (although they called it lamb) and pork (made at least 3 different ways) and lobster made 2 different ways (once in the buffet).
I'm not sure what resort some of the reviewers stayed at but it certainly wasn't the same one I stayed at. If this isn't enough "variety" I don't know what is. For the amount people spend to go to Marea it is simply ridiculous to expect a higher quality buffet. That said they do seriously need to look at getting steam tables at the Falloron and keeping them hot at Marea. The complaints I have was the Sunwing rep knew nothing outside of Sunwing offerings and often handed out misinformation and the resort was so Isolated it was difficult to get out of. The biggest complaint I have is the scooter rental guys are scammers. They won't rent out scooters for more than a day. When you get the scooter it has just enough fumes to get you to Pilon to fill up. You have to go to Pilon because that is the only gas station anywhere near by. When you return the scooter they siphon the gas and put in their motorcycle. (you should have seen how pissed off the guy was when I returned the scooter just as empty as when I received it.) The rest of the staff were wonderful and I enjoyed them very much. As for people inconvenienced by snowstorms on the way back I fail to see what this has to do with Marea or Cuba. Really people come on!

We were skeptical about going to a 3.5 star in Cuba but we went with an open mind and were pleasantly surprised. Resort is clean, pretty and the staff are very accomodating. Food can be a bit repetative and more fresh fruit would have made a big difference, but when we got tired of it we went into town and ate at several different "palladeras". We feasted like kings for very little money.
There is lots to do on the resort, everything is convenient, easy, and very reasonably priced.
I see many ppl complaining about staff stealing. I lost my necklace (an expensive necklace and charm) and had no clue if id lost in the room or on the resort. Our maid found it under the bed and it was returned to me. She could have kept it and id have never known. I dont believe that theft is a problem here, anymore than anywhere else.
Ive stayed at 5 star resorts in the Dominican and Mexico. This resort was definately different, but i would not say it was worse..it was just a different vacation. More of an adventure than a luxurious vacation and i will definately return.
I never once felt like i was being hustled or pressured into buying anything, which was a nice relief as the constant hustle that goes on on the other islands can be very annoying after a day or two.
Again, i was pleasantly surprised and look forward to returning.

Room Tip: Upgrade to vip pkg and stay in a cabana on the second floor. Sleeping with the balcony doors open li...
