I've been to this resort at Marea del Portillo 5 times in the past 3 years. While I agree it's not for everyone, I LOVE it and don't mind returning again and again, as so many others do. Beautifully situated next to the mountains, this is "real" Cuba that (I hear) you don't find in the bigger resort centres.

We find the staff here very friendly and helpful, and they welcome us back like family. The rooms (both at the Farallon and in the Cabanas) are clean but basic. The food in the dining room is varied and always good (that said, some people simply do not like Cuban food, which I find delicious. I actually look forward to the food, and have gained a few pounds every trip.) There are several really good excursions offered by the hotel, but you can also explore by hired taxi, horse & buggy, or on foot.

The pool is good and has a small swim-up bar. The beach is good for swimming, but not right in front of the Farallon - you need to walk past the pier towards the Cabanas section. There is a danger of jelly-fish stings (non-lethal but uncomfortable) if you swim in the evening (or even a cloudy late-afternoon) - treat with lemon juice, vinegar, or urine to reduce the stinging and swelling.

This is a quieter resort, at least it is when we go in the shoulder seasons (April/October.) There is a late-night bar by the beach, but other than that, partiers really need to go to Pilon, or preferably another resort altogether. The clientele is primarily mature adults, families, and lonely older singles looking for Cuban romance (with Cubans, I mean.)

I notice one reviewer mentioned theft from rooms - I have never heard of this happening during our stays. We of course take the same precautions as we do in any hotel room - keep valuables (passport, etc) in the safe, and use luggage locks. We always tip the maid early and often (pesos and small gifts like makeup, socks, toothpaste which we bring for this purpose.)

Reality check: this is Cuba. The roads to the resort are bad (part of the adventure is getting there), power outages happen (bring flashlight and/or candles), and everything is on "Cuba time", which means eventually. Relax, it's a vacation!

Room Tip: Take the $30 VIP option when you book. It is well worth it.

The hotel is okay for lower end travel in Cuba and the food is okay but the beds are horrible.
The government must invest in the older hotels and get respect back for family visiters.
The location is great but the roads are horrible

women travelling solo, please be careful when travelling outside the resort, crime can happen in this small area as well as larger areas. I learned the hard way and still suffer the consequences. The cuban people can be very friendly but basically you are on your own if you have any trouble. The hotel itself is average and the food is ok if you are not a picky eater but make sure you go for dinner in the early evening or there won't be much to choose from. They do the best with what they have. I have been to this hotel over 20 times so obviously I enjoy it but I must stress to the women not to travel outside the resort on their own for their own safety.

Room Tip: If you want a good nights sleep, stayaway from the pool and bar area. Rooms across from the dining a...

I loved this place, I think it's a great value. The ocean is beautifull, warm, clean, nice waves not too big. The place is nice and simple, the food is good (not always the case in Cuba), and it's quiet. I loved the 'village' feeling because of all the local people living nearby, I did not feel secluded. I normally don't like resorts very much because of the incomfortable gap between rich and poor people, but I felt good at this place. There are horses to rent in the backyard (we did an amazing afternoon horseback riding and having a meal in a village), and chickens that runs in the countryside nearby. The place is small, but not too small, so it's walkable. You can choose between 2 restaurants (and 2 hotels), but the place up the hill is much better (exept for breakfast where it's good at both places). The rooms where nice and clean at both hotels, with hot water in the shower. The place is quiet, and the vue is amazing on the mountains of the national park. The beach is not overcrowded, and it's a family feeling. The only thing I missed was the famous white sand, but it's a detail compared to the rest. Take the VIP package, it's worth it, and not so expensive. It allows you to go in the island where the sand is white, and to do a very nice cruise at dusk. Oh, and don't forget your mosquito repelent if you want to have dinner outside on the gorgeous terrace.. I got more than 100 bites on my body from my stay for a week.

Great view , I hope your brakes work ! The cost of $ 80.00 each is $ 50.00 to much, I would not go again. The food on the Jeep tour was cooked to perfection by a local women, nice Lady. 150 steps down to the waterfall two benches to eat on with an open look at the falls. You have to have your Insurance paid up for the steep up and down trails made for goats and small animals. 150 steps straight up, don`t forget the bug spray. If you want a case of 24 beers for 24 dollars, this is the place . Just ask your guide. Great and wild trip, to much money for the ride !!!

Getting through the airport , as usual is a breeze in cuba. The airport has a bank there if you want to change money there early for things like tipping the guy who carries your luggage at the resort. The ride to the resort is one and a half hours. But it's a scenic ride, so it's ok. Check in was a breeze. The rooms were small but clean. Staff were very friendly also. If you like to get out and about, rent a scooter..they are cheap. There's a beach in the town Pilon about 30 minutes away. It's for the locals. It's very nice there. everyone is friendly. Expect to get an invite for lobster dinner at the beach. You will really stand out. The stay was in general quite nice. Peaceful area. BUT....BE FOREWARNED....EVERY SATURDAY NIGHT IS BANDITO NIGHT THERE...LOTS OF STEALING GOING ON AT THIS RESORT BY THE STAFF. After the guests leave for their saturday night excursion to Pilon for a street party, the banditos go to work stealing the guests personal property. It was the talk at the resort by the guest the next morning at breakfast. Don't leave anything out in your room that you're not willing to part with. I lost expensive sunglasses and my girlfriend lost 2 tops. It happened to my friend also last spring. They were told it's a regular occurance at the resort by people who work there. It's such a shame as it's a lovely area to stay in, beach and mountains. Mexico is starting to gain some appeal again.

This was almost the best trip so far to cuba. Eight trips in total.
First, what made it "almost " the best trip. Simply....it was all the thieving going on.

Sadly, it wasn't an isolated incident. It all happened saturday night. Every saturday the hotel offers a bus ride into a small town about 30 minutes away to the town's weekly street festival. Many of the guest attend this local event. It's cheap and lively. And you get to see the cuban way to party. It's a fun night. But the next morning by the pool at the resort, the discussion was about who was missing what. For me it was snorkeling gear. The other guy at the table was missing $200 sunglasses. Another lady was missing clothing. And it wasn't just our table either. I've also read about this in other reports. You never think it's going to happen to you. It ruins your memory of an otherwise good trip.

I really think Sunwing should step in and do something about it. Like maybe stop flights to that resort for a week or 2. Put pressure on the company to replace the management and security staff. It's obviously an inside job.

THE GOOD: The food was good. It was a little repetitive, but it was good. They always had 2 types of pasta, usually spaghetti and elbows and one or 2 tomato sauces. Sometimes a meat sauce. They were all tasty. They also had chicken and fish all the time that was always well done. A selection of rice. some veggies that always included tomatoes, carrots, cucumbers. Some nights they had lettuce to, which i really like. The grill was open for every meal. The deserts were all good to.

The staff were always friendly.

The rooms were small, which suits me just fine. I only sleep in them. The beds were lumpy, which doesn't bother my that much as they were uniformly lumpy, so sleeping wasn't a problem. The pillows were not musty. The safe was a little smaller than the others I've seen. So if you travel with a laptop, you might have a problem fitting in the safe. Seriously, I would advise not bring your laptop to this hotel, considering all the thieving going on here.

The grounds were clean.

The beach was brown sand which visually isn't as appealing as white sand. It was cleaned regularly. Also, you couldn't snorkel right from the beach in front of the hotel. The water wasn't clear there. You need to walk about 20 to 30 minutes to the west to find water clear enough to snorkel in.

The locals there are very friendly. I ended up in at least 6 people home's. I've never seen so few hustlers in any area as here. Usually in cuba, where there are tourist, there are hustlers. I find them to be a real pain in the *ss.

The province of Granma is apparently the poorest part of cuba, so bring gits. They are much needed. Simple stuff....like toilet paper, soap(actually, buy the soap there as soap is heavy to travel with), they need backpacks, razor blades, pencils, paper, socks, underwear, shoes.....etc

THE BAD: No night life. They have a disco there, at the adjacent resort but it's not used much. I never checked it out, but I heard that thursday night is the only night you might find some locals there, other wise it's just 1 or 2 or 3 people there from the resort. It's open 11pm to 2am.

There are no late bars open at the resort. That means that if you stray in at 2 am and need a coffee or a cold drink....you out of luck.
