“Best Chinese I know”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

Last night we visited another local Chinese restaurant in Mossley and must say that Phoenix City is still my favourite. You are always guaranteed excellent quality food and the menu is extensive and the banquets are fab.

The food is always well presented showing an artistic flair, much unlike the very basic presentation received from the other restaurant.

You always receive a warm welcome and excellent service from all including the owner who always makes a point of coming over to us.

It is nice to eat in this relaxing atmosphere.

I also dined in a Chinese restaurant in Cardiff this week which was said to be the best but not a patch on Phoenix City.

Still number 1 for me - well done!

“Excellent”
Reviewed June 2, 2013

I have eaten at this restaurant on many occasions and have never been disappointed. The food is lovely and the service is second to none. Easily compares with many much more expensive Chinese restaurants in Manchester City Centre. The owners are very keen to ensure that each and every customer has a very enjoyable experience and they always try to obtain feedback. I would definitely recommend Phoenix City to any lovers of good quality Chinese cuisine.

“Very poor quality and value”
Reviewed April 6, 2013 via mobile

The restaurant is in need of redecorating and has paper napkins and table clothes!
The menu is fairly limited, but contains most favourite Chinese dishes - just lacks imagination. Prices are around the same that you would expect in a Chinese restaurant, but the quality of the food is really poor.

Our party mainly ordered chicken dishes and it was blatantly obvious that they had bulked up the dishes with vegetables such as cauliflower and potatoes to disguise the lack of chicken in the dishes. At a glance, you would think the dishes had sufficient meat, but once you begin eating it you soon realise that it's not the case. In addition to this, our party of 10 each ordered a portion of fried rice , which carries an additional £3 charge per order (none of the meals come with rice or chips included in the price). We felt thoroughly ripped off as the waiter brought a large pot of rice to the table and then provided each guest with 1.5 large spoon fulls each - significantly less than what you would expect in a portion. The remainder of the rice then disappeared and we were forced to pay for an additional two portions to share!

Overall it's very poor value so I would strongly advise people to avoid at all costs.

“Excellent food in dim-lit surroundings”
Reviewed November 10, 2012

My first impression was a cordial reception followed by a glance around the room which was poorly lit inasmuch as the dimness was desolate and gloomy rather than intimate. Overhead lights flattened the atmosphere coldly yet they were too dim to let you see properly. It gave a depressing feel to the interesting canal side interior and the blue decor did nothing to alleviate it. The service was a little bit on the slow side but very professional in terms of manner and it was better than being pressured to order. The food was delicious and very reasonably priced. I think they just need different lighting and it'll be practically perfect. The staff take great pride in it and you can tell it's family run, very nice people and whoever is doing the cooking could hold their own at places like Yang Sing or anywhere. I had king prawn, a dish I order regularly at various places and I loved it. The rice was heavenly, my brother's crispy noodles got pinched by several of us as they were fabulous. I also tried his tofu, often disappointing in some places but not here. Good crispy texture and flavour. Parents both had glowing reports of their food but it was they who introduced the place to me. The set three course meal which my brother had is terrific value.

“gorgeous food”
Reviewed April 30, 2012

i am vegetarian and when i go to other chinese restaurants there is little choice and its all same old same old.this is different - the vegetarian platter for starters is delicious and everything on the plate offers a unique flavour, the crispy coconut milk balls are delicious but 6 is a bit sickly so best to share.as for mains the crispy vegetarian chicken in black pepper sauce with fried rice is a dish i could eat all year round, even my non veggie friends ordered and enjoyed this.the lady who runs the restaurant is very welcoming and very funny.the staff are good and the drinks are resonable.the function room upstairs is great for parties and the buffet is delicious too.the best chinese in the area.i cannot comment on desserts because i am always too full to even think about them.....and i love my puddings!!!!
