“Good food, shame about the service.”
Reviewed October 15, 2013

While visiting the Hubbards area with my husband we drove past the Trellis Cafe and decided to stop in for lunch. It was a beautiful day so we sat outside on the verandah to enjoy the sun. It is a cute little cafe located along a busy road in the heart of Hubbards. The decor is a bit dated but the atmosphere is comfortable. We had a nice server from Australia and our food and drinks arrived within good time. We both enjoyed our lunches despite an error in my husband's order (he ate it anyway and didn't mention the mix-up to the staff) and the fact that we found the prices to be quite steep. A half sandwich and a mug of soup for $20 seems quite pricy even by our Western Canada standards. What was ridiculous was charging $3.00 for a can of President's Choice club soda. I can understand paying $3.00 for a bottle of Perrier or San Pellgrino, but PC brand club soda? A very steep mark-up when you can buy a whole case at Super Store for $3.99.

Despite the high prices we decided to return today with my parents as the food was so tasty. Unfortunately we did not have the same experience as yesterday. Our server today seemed to be having a bad day or was clearly not impressed with her job. She did not smile or seem interested in serving us. She was almost rude and I was really disappointed with our experience. She took our orders without a word and when our food arrived she did not check in on us to see if we were enjoying our meals-there was another mistake with my husbands order and we decided to flag someone down this time. There was no offer to re-fill our waters or to see if we would be interested in any dessert (the desert was delicious on our previous visit and we would have ordered it again). For a restaurant that claims to be a winner of the 2012 Taste of Nova Scotia I would highly recommend that you ensure you have kind, friendly staff and that you get the orders right. Even if the food is delicious, poor staff will leave a bad taste in your customer's mouths.

“A bit over price”
Reviewed October 6, 2013

The food was good but overpriced, in our opinion. The cottages recommended another restaurant but we were tired and saw this one first and since there were lots of cars in the parking lot we stopped. The full parking lot was not an indication of the patronage unless they have a back room. It is small and my have been an Indian restaurant at one time. That would have been nice, but the lone curry dish was vegetarian and we wanted meat. Although the place was almost empty, we were asked if we had reservations. Our negative response seemed to be of concern to the hostess but we were eventually seated. It took a long, long time to get our simple meal. The place was still pretty empty when we left so I am not sure why the lack of reservations were of such apparent concern. The menu seemed all over the place. Maybe they are looking for their identity. As I said, the food was good, but not any better than other places we ate during the 3 weeks we were traveling.

“very good and friendly service”

we had a nice dinner and breakfast at this restaurant. For dinner we had chowder, fresh haddock fillet and sweet potato coconut curry which was very good. For breakfast, we all had benedict eggs, very good choice.

“Nice place for lunch”
Reviewed September 14, 2013

We were recommended to go to this placeby a local artist when we were at her gallery(near Peggy`s Cove). We were greeted at the restaurant warmly and had lunch. My wife had fish cakes and salad. The salad was particularly good. I had the seafood chowder. i would rate it above average. It was a decent portion and was tasty.I would recommend this place for a lunch if in the area.

“Taste of Nova Scotia’s 2012 Prestige Award Winner”

The Trellis Cafe was on our way to Chester, NS. It is a quaint place with a trellis grape vine covered patio and we were able to sit out side. The service was super slow and our order was taken twice. The coffee was slow in coming and we had to ask for it a couple of times as did the other tables. Our order was finally taken a third time. When the food arrived, it was cold.. it may have great food but who enjoys bennies cold! How to destroy your reputation by a poorly trained waitress and one who wasn't too concerned about her service or in fact that she had missed orders at the other table.
