It used to be common practice to go into the kitchen of a Greek taverna and explore the possibilities. In Lakka, for some time, this has been an option at Nionios taverna which is in danger of becoming a sort of theme park.
In the next square - strangely Edward Kenedy square- the recently established Alexandros has a authenticity which attracts many Greeks, both local and on holiday. it is very much family run and debating the options - preferably in Greek - in the kitchen is a must. The κουνέλι στιφάδο (rabbit stifado) is very good. You will be offered roast potatoes - but rice soaks up the lovely sauce better. Good retsina, ouzo or tsiporo.
