We had to try several times before we could get a booking, which gives an indication of how popular and good Taylor's is. We started at the bar with cocktails, and the Hendrick's High Tea is divine - top-notch gin with cucumber ice, served in china - if it hadn't been so staunch I'd happy have drunk another one!
All three courses were great, and the staff were easily able to explain what I could safely eat (gluten-free), and even had complimentary gluten-free bread to go with the truffle butter to open. I started with grilled asparagus with poached egg, popcorn grits (amazingly nice) and apple. The confit duck for my main was beautifully cooked, perfect texture and very flavoursome. Likewise, the pannacotta was perfectly cooked and infused with very festive Christmas spices. The wine list is reasonably priced and plenty to choose by the glass.
I must admit, I did feel sorry for the chef and the staff when you hear people at other tables grumbling that there's no garlic bread on the menu and they don't have cheap bottled beer (lots of interesting craft beers are available). This is a fine bistro and if you want 'the standard stuff', it's probably better to try somewhere else nearby along Jackson Street.
