Xenios Anastasia Resort & Spa
Ranked #1 of 2 Hotels in Nea Skioni
Reviewed July 30, 2013

Just returned from a week at Anastasia resort. We - husband and two boys (5 and 9) were first time Neilson customers. Great time had by all. My children loved kids club and were horrified to learn that two mornings a week had to be spent with their parents. They’ve been to kids clubs before on a variety of holidays but they both said Neilson was the best ever and haven’t stopped asking to return. Nannies were excellent (five year old still talking about Frankie).

Staff were, without exception, friendly, helpful and determined to make sure everyone had a good time.

Food and accommodation were good. Hotel was a little tired but if we’d wanted super luxury in this area we’d have gone back to Sani. We had a junior suite which was perfect. Friends (travelling without children) had a suite in the main block which was lovely but I think the junior suite was better suited to a family as the children could run directly out on the lawn.

The resorts is very compact and free wifi is only available in the lounge.

Spa was very good. I had a very ‘firm’ massage and a lovely manicure.

Tuition was very good. My tennis group (beginners) was really good fun. Watersports seemed very well run (bring watershoes). Fitness classes with Holly were brilliant if exhausting.

There was some evening entertainment including an outdoor screening of Mama Mia. Entertainment started at 9pm but as kids clubs ended at 10pm we didn’t get to enjoy this for long. Maybe one slightly later night or ‘paid for’ babysitting could be an option in the future?

The only thing I would say Neilson lacks over say, Club Med, would be the availability of free cold water. It was very, very hot, particularly on the tennis court and a few water coolers would have been very welcome. Could Neilson not just factor this into the overall cost. I think most people would rather pay a few pounds extra and have ice cold water on tap.

Thoroughly recommend a Neilson holiday - thinking of a trip to Turkey in October.

What a great holiday we have just returned from! Nielson have got the formula right: although the Anastasia is looking a bit tired (Nielson are moving elsewhere next year), it is spotlessly clean, the tennis, bikes, watersports and swimming pool are all first rate. Nielson's biggest asset is its staff: without exception the most friendly, efficient, helpful and fun loving bunch, from the restaurant and bar staff to the ski team and the tennis coaches, the much imitated Alec and Jack. Nothing was too much trouble and the atmosphere was one of: "relax as hard as you like". Drinks prices were steep, but little cheaper in Skioni, the nearest village, where you can sample a number of decent restaurants, but don't expect to eat better here than in the hotel, where the food is the best I have ever sampled on holiday. The only downside - Heathrow Terminal 5: misplaced our luggage for 4 days on the way out and we all waited for 1.5 hours at the carousel on the return journey. All the technology in the world is no good if the baggage handlers are totally incompetent and not bothered.

Room Tip: Pay the extra for a sea view room. The others overlook a busy road. All rooms are well equipped and...

Thoroughly enjoyed ourselves here for a week - with all the sporting facilities we could want, good tasty food and lovely, very helpful staff. Sadly a few niggles dropped the resort into the average to very good rating for us - lack of food labelling for allergies/intolerances (I had spoken with Neilson Customer Services before leaving who assured me the food would be labelled). Horrible sweaty mattress protectors and lumpy pillows, a no-show 'shuttle bus' and some minor maintenance issues on the sports equipment particularly on the catamarans. I have fed this back to Neilson who have responded promptly and report they have addressed most of these issues.

Stayed at the Hotel Anastasia Resort on a Neilson 'stay and sail' holiday June/July 2013. Hotel is only a bit off the excellent rating for me, as it has some maintenance issues and looks a bit tired with a few things broken. The layout is not too big, and if you get a sea view room at the farthest block, you'll not get the noise/music from the pool bar. Ultra clean bedrooms and superb cleaning team. Lots of facilities, great spa, great range of food, and water sports. Not located near other towns, so you'll need car to visit other places, as buses irregular. Possibly not suited for more than one week, as it'll get boring.
The beach is thin and long and you'll need water shoes, as it's pebbly and hurts feet.
Heard that Neilson are not using it after this year due to maintenance quarrel with owners who they lease it from. A shame as fundamentally ticks all the boxes.
Location is 40 mins walk from the small village, which has a bit of everything you want, but you can get a 6 euros taxi each way, but few and far between, so better to order one via your restaurant when you have finished your meal.
Neilson staff great overall, with some very professional indidividuals, but big majority all very young and lacking in maturity and experience and sometimes hit and miss on service.....and so not suited to understanding needs of older clients that appreciate and expect calm, all round customer service. They gear up for the high season when children allowed. Holidays right now being heavily discounted.

Room Tip: Get a sea view room but you have to pay more at time of booking. If you like noise/music later, the...

We last stayed with neilson when our children were early teens and we all had Great holidays. We went with our youngest to celebrate his graduation and also had a really good holiday this time. The hotel was comfortable and clean and although the beds were hard and a bit sweaty due to plastic mattress covers we slept well as the air conditioning was good. The food was in plentiful supply with great choices. The cooked meals on the buffet were rather overdone but there was always freshly cooked food on the barbecue and copious salads and sweets . Tyra was a very helpful waitress and always anticipated our needs. We opted for a kettle to make drinks and were a little surprised at paying extra for this both weeks but it was good to be able to make drinks in the evening after going to the bars. The activities on offer were of high quality with knowledgeable staff who were universally cheerful despite having a 30 minute walk to work each day and working hard. Ness and Crystal were both very helpful on the beach and the team was superbly run by 'Chuff'. The tennis coaches were superb and turned 2 people with no previous knowledge of the game into enthusiasts who might join a club. The biking was often over booked but once we'd realised the need to book early and keep trying, one of our party did most of the rides he wanted. He spoke highly of the bike instructors. the reception staff were always helpful and a mix of locals and 'gap year' type youngsters. Sophie guided one of the trips
well. We took the trip to
Thessaloniki which was superb. 2 of us did the guided tour which was easily the best and most helpful I've ever been on. We felt we knew a great deal about the city at the end. 2 went around town after a helpful orientation. Only downside was the trip to the shopping village which curtailed our time in the city and was hot and very much like a shopping centre anywhere else. So all in all a wonderful holiday enjoyed by all.

Nice hotel run through Nielson who's lease finishes this year. Excellent staff and organisation. Tried several sports and the staff were patient and supportive. Food was excellent varied and plentiful. Access to sports was good. Children's clubs excellent. As previously reported poor wifi in reception area which was very slow and limited range, Good evening entertainment incl Movie under Starts, Staff Battle of Bands and traditional Greek night music and dancing.

Room Tip: Worth extra for sea views.

Just returned from a 2 week Stay and Sail holiday and want to book again (6th to 20th July).

Having not sailed since kids arrived (so 12 years) went for a week in resort and a week on flotilla. First week was brilliant especially due to the kids club (our kids being 14 and 12 were in the Surf Squad). All the clubs seemed to be very good with the staff excelling - so many thanks to Essie for looking after our pair!). Lots of things to do and no pressure to do any more than what you wanted. Food was good and lots of it - though think it might be repetitive if you did 2 weeks as has a weekly cycle. We concentrated on the sea side of matters with lots of organised and individual sailing opportunities and a great team doing the water / board skiing. The pool was pleasant and (possibly given the dates) was uncrowded and a very pleasant lack of towel covered "reserved" sun beds. The Spa was reasonable and very relaxing.

The advantage of the first week in resort was the the kids got to know a number of other kids that then went on flotilla - and got used to the lack of wifi so were weaned off their electronic devices well in advance of the second week.

The second week was a very relaxed return to sailing after 12 years - but it is rather like riding a bike. I would not say the sail area was the best I have sailed but the Lead Crew (Vaughn, Jenny and Nugget) made the best of it. I suspect they were a tad nervous as this was the first week with kids but it went well - I think as half had been in the previous weeks clubs and Jenny encouraged them to extend that to the new kids.

Slightly negative comments reserved for 2 areas:

- firstly the cost of the drinks / snack was excessive and added up to a significant additional cost. For an already expensive holiday this was a downer.

- secondly the final evening / day post the flotilla was poorly explained organised - at the front sales end (the flotilla / hotel staff tried best to cover). If you went for the "formal" process you stayed the friday night on board, had to leave boats by 0900 Saturday morning and then were hanging around the pool all day until departure at 1630 with no food. Local options (if available) was to pay for additional room and food (£90 for us) and taxi back to hotel. Given the late flight back giving such a long period from end of sailing I think this should be better organised up front.

Understand that this is the last year Neilson are at the Anastasia Hotel - various rumours as to why. Hotel was looking a slightly bit worn at the edges but still in good order. Look forward to seeing what options are available next year.

Room Tip: Go for sea view. Block 1 best for access to facilities but might be noisy given other comments- but...
