Having read the Tripadvisor reviews and the online menu we had great hopes that the Bulls Head would easily meet the mark.
The thing I enjoyed most was the beer and the opportunity of a taster before buying a pint. My wife wife is a superb cook and so when eating out, it offers a great opportunity to enjoy foods that the other halves don't like. Remember Jack Spratt?
I dislike offal, so my wife had the calves livers and they could not have been cooked and presented much better and so fully met her expectations.
My wife dislikes game, and so I ordered the special Game Pie. Described as Venison, pheasant and other fowl baked in a crusty pie. Sadly, it did not live up to the billing.
On cutting open the pie I expected the dark rich colours of venison and game. However, I was presented with carrots and potatoes (not mentioned) and plenty of tenderized meat that looked rather like stewing beef, rather than game. The colour was grey like the interior of a Hollands meat and potato pie from your local chip shop. It was pretty tasteless and so disappointing.
Even more curious was the interior of the pastry. The outside looked an even brown colour, however the inside of the pastry (somehow) was burned in places and quite hard. I needed copious amounts of gravy to moisten it, but what you saw and what you taste did not match up.
It seems from other reviews that consistency of the cooking may be the biggest problem, so perhaps safer to just stick with sandwiches and chips and enjoy the lovely beers.
