“Highlight of our Cambodian trip”
Reviewed March 20, 2013

We are an older couple and are both seasoned travellers. We were looking for a change from hotels in cities and after an internet search came up with the Meas Homestay.
The Homestay is a 2 hour drive south of Phonm Penh and is quite straightforward to locate. We really had no idea what to expect when we set out so we were delighted to find ourselves in the middle of an extended family set-up. Our hosts, Mach and Siphen, are both teachers and both speak good English. They are extraordinarily enterprising and besides teaching and running a homestay they are involved in many community and school projects.
They have gradually extended their home so that they can now accommodate up to 20 guests they told us. We were the only visitors when we were there. We had a basic but comfortable room with adjacent shower and toilet.
Siphen is an excellent cook and gave us 3 good meals a day which we ate with the family. Beer and soft drinks were constantly available at cost price - you just help yourself from the cold box and mark down what you have used.
They run an after school club for High School students who want to practise their English. We joined in with this and spent an hour a day talking with a lively group of about 30 students.
Our hosts couldn't have been more hospitable. We spent many hours talking about life in Cambodia and the difficult times they have been through. They arranged for us to visit a nearby weaving centre and lent us bicycles to tour the countryside. They even took a day off to take us to Kep and Kampot where we had a memorable day enjoying barbecued crab and squid.
After 5 days we were sorry to leave but hope that perhaps we can return one day.

Having visited the Homestay in early 2012 I decided it would be a good base for further tripping or just relaxation in SE Asia.It was great to return to see Siphen , Mach and all the family again. Living in the countryside and watching the daily routines and enjoying the peace and quiet was great for the soul. The homestay is only a 2 hour Express Bus ride to Phnom Penh or a 1 hour Express Bus to Kampot so an ideal location. I was fortunate enough to be there during the rice harvest and the construction of a new rice storage shed so was able to lend a hand. Great fun working with the locals and just immersing into the local scene. Some other highlights were attending some family weddings , taking the students from Hope for Happiness Centre to Angkor Wat for a three day visit and just riding my bicycle around the local villages tracks each afternoon. Having travelled fairly extensively in Cambodia since 2010 the food prepared by Siphen ,Oun, Sopheap and Mom is truly sensational. Everything from the red pineapple curry, rice porridge , numerous seafood dishes, the extra hot chilli and of course some cold local beers. If you are keen on a great local experience with truly warm friendly and exceptionally happy people this is the spot. Stay a week or longer and I guarantee you WILL NOT be disappointed. Give it a go it will be one of the highlights of your Cambodian holiday.

wow, what an experience! I must admit that this was life changing. I left my head and heart there. How could you become part of a family in just few days....it happened to me. It does not get better than this. I experienced real culture, food and love from the whole family.

Can't wait to come back with all my loved ones.

Big hugs and love from London

Paul

was a wonderful visit with Siphen and family - i flew thru out cambodia with air america from '70 to '75 and our last trips were just prior to pol pot bringing the country to destruction. I could relate when Siphen told me of her family struggle and rebuilding their lives from ashes. the visit was a new dimension in reconnecting with cambodia.. a most unique visit with wonderful people and i hope to return to continue the visit. my visit dec 15 -17, '12 . nice accommodations, great food and hospitality and new friends- Capt Tony Coalson

We were lucky enough to bump into a fellow traveller who recommended Meas homestay to our family of 5. We arrived with trepidation; having never done a homestay before and not knowing what to expect, but were immediately made to feel like we were part of the family. Siphen, Mach and their entire family are truly inspirational people, who not only open their home but their hearts as well. We slept in a traditional home (very comfortable beds with mosquito nets and fans), we cycled through gorgeous rice fields with children running out to greet us, we trashed rice and we ate the most authentic delicious food we had eaten in Cambodia (the traditional rice pancakes with pork were to die for). Best of all we met a wonderful bunch of students who Siphen teaches English each evening. We talked, played games and enjoyed their company so much, that it very quickly became the highlight of our trip to Cambodia.

We took a tuk-tuk from Phnom Penh to Takeo! ... a 4 hr. trip that is not for everyone, but we had fun! When we arrived in Takeo, our tuk-tuk driver had a hard time finding the place ( as he'd never driven that far before!) I had not brought the ph. # with me. However, after finally locatiing the ph.# & having the driver speak at length to the owners, we arrived at the Meas homestay. We had a wonderful time there!! The owners are most welcoming. The surroundings are all rice paddies, which you can walk thro at sunrise ( or whenever you like!) We only stayed one night, but the one dinner we had was very delicious! Highly recommend, & thoroughly enjoyed the experience! Thank you so much!

I was extremely fortunate to hear about this tremendous family homestay via a fellow traveller who I met in Kampot. i stayed just over two weeks and throughly enjoyed Siphen ,Mach and the extended family's hospitality, friendlliness and geniune warmth. Interacting with the family the students and the locals was absolutely delightful. If you have forgotten how to laugh ,smile and enjoy the moment you definitely need to visit here from some RE - EDUCATION it is a great experience.

in addition the quiet and peaceful countryside ,the comfortable accommodation and the sensational cooking ( plenty of variety with truly amazing flavours) made for a good stay.

A definite MUST VISIT if you like real people with big hearts , big smiles and tons of spontaneous laughter.

Room Tip: Book in advance to ensure you can get a room this place is very popular.
