Santa's Hotel Aurora
Ranked #1 of 1 Luosto B&B and Inns
Certificate of Excellence
Reviewed December 22, 2012

We stayed at the Aurora Chalet (renamed Santa's Hotel Aurora since it was bought over by the Santa's Hotel chain) for 3 wonderful nights in early December.
Getting to the hotel was a breeze: the Skibus, which plies the Rovaniemi-Luosto-Pyha route, picks up passengers from outside the Rovaniemi airport and stops right in front of the hotel about 1hr 30 minutes later. A return journey cost us 45 Euros per person.
The building is rather non-descript, but I personally place more importance on the interior than the exterior of buildings. The lobby has comfortable sofas and a fireplace, and the staff manning the reception counter were helpful and friendly. As the hotel only has about 30 rooms, it does not cater to large tour groups, so the hotel has a cosy, intimate feel to it (a marked difference from the huge Lapland Luostotunturi nearby, which has coachloads of people arriving and departing on any given day).
We had room 31, which was located on the top floor, at the end of the corridor. The room was large, with spacious wardrobes, a desk, a fireplace and a private sauna. They also provided a kettle, and coffee and tea sachets which were replenished daily. We found the dark wood interior gave the room a more homely feel, and there were more than enough lights in the room to brighten it if needed.
The breakfast that was included in our hotel rate was wonderful, with a few hot items (scrambled eggs, porridge, sausages) for those needing more than toast and coffee. On the topic of toast, the bread is baked fresh every morning, and if you go early enough, you get to feel and hear the crispy crust crunch under your knife as you slice through the loaf.
The restaurant doesn't serve lunch, which means you'll have to explore the area for food. If you don't drive, you'll have to make do with either the Luoston Kerttuli , the restaurants in the Lapland Hotel Luostontunturi or Restaurant Hovi, all are within 10 minutes' walking distance from the hotel.
The fireplace and sauna are the highlights of the hotel room; try to get a room with these if you can. I can't imagine a more wonderful hotel for a winter holiday.

Room Tip: Room 31 is really good - top floor, corner room.

We stayed for 5 nights. Luosto is a beautiful town, so picturesque! The hotel is nice, it's not luxurious but is in the best location out of all of the hotels. It is literally a 2min walk to the ski field and lift and ski / snowboard hire shop. Snow games the company that do all of the day activities is 30seconds away, literally at the end of the driveway, they provide your boots, waterproof clothes, gloves etc, all free of charge if booking activities.

Do try to book a room with a fireplace. We also got dinner included, it is only $35euro per person for a 3 course set menu the food is delicious. Breakfast was included.

Highly recommend visiting luosto, we unfortunately didn't get to see the northern lights, they were last seen about 3 weeks before we visited. We had cloudy days. It is still a lovely place to visit.

Room Tip: Book a fireplace room, well worth it!

The hotel fine, it is clean and the staff are friendly, but it's not really 'luxury' and the food is nice but not outstanding. The lounge area is not accessible at night so make sure you know how to get back to your room if you are out late hunting for the illusive Aurora Borealis! We had our activities organised by Snow Games and they were great.

There's nothing actually wrong with this place. I should get that out the way right at the beginning - the rooms are clean, the bathrooms nice. There is indeed a sauna in our bathroom, and a wood fire in the living area. There's a sitting area and an adjoined bedroom, both with big windows. There's a TV, and free WiFi. The room also has tea/coffee-making facilities. The chalet offers an aurora alarm, whereby they provide a phone, and text it if the aurora is visible.

It all sounds idillic.

However, we were expecting a luxury lodge, and this place falls just a little short in lots of areas.

The building itself is modern and blocky, and not at all attractive. The interior is part faux-rustic and part modern. The view from the room is of a road and some signs.

Rooms are dated, with dark wood panelling and a dimly lit feel.

The restaurant looks fine, and the food smells good. However, it lacks warmth. It is expensively priced (most main dishes 20-30 Euros) and the menu is rather frilly, and heavy on the salmon soup/reindeer steak for our tastes - we didn't eat there. (Side note - the Bistro restaurant at hotel Luostotunturi is excellent - more modestly priced, and the menu slightly more varied. We had the burger, which was excellent)

The service on arrival was acceptable, but nothing more. Cold welcome, minimal information given ("it's in the book") and no offer of help with luggage etc.

Towels in the room are small and rough - no hint of luxury here. They provided three pillows for a double room too, although were happy to add one on request.

On the topic of double rooms - this seems to be a Finland standard, but the bed wasn't actually a double, it was two singles pushed together. However, this place doesn't even put a double mattress topper over them, or join the beds together in any way - makes for an unnerving wake-up when you fall between them!

Overall, this hotel is a nice idea, but falls short on lots of nice touches that would make for a much better experience. Shame.

Room Tip: The fire and sauna are nice, and not present in every room.

My husband and I have just returned from a fantastic holiday in Luosto. The hotel was lovely, comfy beds, wonderfully clean and a huge picture window facing towards where the Northern Lights are most likely to appear. The staff were friendly and helpful, and although there is a set menu every night, the food was delicious, especially the reindeer. Breakfast is a buffet with a wide selection so there is something for everyone. The hotel has a changing room which is very useful to keep the bulky outdoor clothes and equipment in. Our activities were organised by Snow Games who are literally just across the road from the hotel. There are all types of activities, but we did the snow shoe hike, snowmobiling, husky sledging, reindeer sleigh ride and a trip to the amethyst mine. All activites were really well organised and Snow Games provide all the clothing, equipment and safety helmets. Our guides were superb and really looked after us. Would definitely go back again and would highly recommend it to anyone who likes the snow.

Room Tip: We had a room with a fireplace on the second floor which was very nice, but all the rooms I believe...

We have just returned from 4 nights at the Aurora Chalet. The staff is friendly, always here to help, the rooms are nice, a bid an old style. Food is also good, just for the normal tourists wait of a such place. There is a changing room and it's very handy in winter. Alls rooms have a sauna. There is also a computer to have a look on internet. They have a particular alert system with a mobile when there is an aurora borealis. You can see the aurora from the windows of the rooms but the best is to go on the lake or above Luosto.

Room Tip: Superior rooms are good.

We had an amazing holiday in Luosto organised by Activities Abroad. Aurora Chalet is one of two hotels in Luosto and definitely the better of the two. The Tunturi is much larger with a huge dining room and feels less cosy and inpersonal The Auroa Chalet staff are lovely, the food was plentiful and amazing every night (especially the reindeer steak!) and the rooms warm, cosy with lots of storage space for all those winter clothes. The sauna in each room is a real treat after a day out in the cold. The reception also has a lovely cosy area with a fire which was nice to chill in with a glass of mulled wine every evening. One thing I would say is that the mattresses are really soft - I had really broken sleep the whole week which is very unlike me and the only reason I can think of is because of the mattress but the rooms are still lovely. Also, the hotel says it has open fireplaces in some of the rooms - this isnt actually the case - they are wood burners and you have to keep them closed but still a lovely thing to have in the room.

The hotel also has a changing room for storing your snowsuits and boots which is great as you dont have to put them in your room everyday.

We were lucky enough to see the Northern lights 4 times in a week, one of which lasted an hour and was stunning. If the alarm had not gone off that time we would have missed it as they came out very early - 7:30pm so most people were having dinner. On another two occasions the alarm didnt go off but we saw the lights from our window (you can see them if you have the lights in your room off) but by the time we put on all our layers and ran outside they had disappeared! Tip for photographing the lights - take a tripod!

The hotel is in a great location - 2 mins walk from an ideal place to see the lights and 5 min walk to the ski slopes and the frozen lake. The whole trip was really well organised and we loved all the activities, especially the snowmobiling and husky sledging.

Luosto itself is very small and quiet and although its mainly geared towards tourists, it never felt touristy and often we hardly saw anyone else whilst out looking for the lights or having a romantic stroll around the lake everynight. The ski slopes were also really quiet so an ideal place to learn to ski.
