We stopped at Killeen's for tea after leaving Dublin, on our way to Galway. After visiting the monastic ruins, we went into town. What craic! Mr. Killeen met us, and gave us a history of the town, the monastery, John Paul II's visit to the monastery and more!!!
The breakfast was IRISH BREAKFAST....delicious!!
Thank you Mr. Killeen!

If you go in the left door it's a local store. If you go in the right hand door it's the pub!
The owner is a welcoming and enthusiastic character. The place is covered in currency, licence plates and business cards from all over the world. The food is basic but tasty. The staff friendly and it was a relaxing place to lunch with two one year olds running riot.
On a dreary December day in a historical but grey village, this was a worthwhile stop.

We were touring the local sites on a cold and wet January day. The B&B owner told us to be sure to hit Killeen's. It didn't look too promising but it was a cold and wet night. We went in for a pint and stayed half the night.

You cannot even describe the place. Not fancy, hope it never is (although the toilets have been upgraded to an amazing level!). Lots of interesting "sayings" pinned to the walls. A nice fire going and lots of pure locals this blustery night.

Grace was serving and was lovely. Dublin actor/guitar teacher/Belmont boat owner Victor came in and we visited. It took a few pints. Derry (hope I got that right) was the local historian behind the bar and he was an absolute treasure. He kept coming back once he saw we really cared and it just got better and better. The bartender even burned out "toastie" since we were all so engaged in conversation, but he gave it to us and made another. Loved it.

Derry told us where to ask for the key for Clonfert Cathedral, gave us lots of directions, maps, advice. The man is a national treasure.

Back at the B&B the owner told us that he just didn't know how to properly explain the place. Can't be done, you just have to go in and join the community with a few pints and you will understand. May it never change!

On many nights they have traditional music. We would have loved that but the warm fire and conversation were without equal.

Four of us stopped here for dinner while cruising on the Shannon River.
Louise and her family could not have been more pleasant.
We even ended up helping to sweep the sidewalk -- in exchange
for some ice and one of Louise's CDs.

Great pub with very good food and even better pints. Barman was friendly and quick to serve us. Prices were very reasonable and there were plenty of locals and tourists chatting away with each other.
