Don't judge a book by its cover...or indeed an eatery by its exterior.
Food surpassed expectations...the view over the bay was outstanding.
Sesame covered chicken with cous cous , salad and flatbreads was superb. 2 entrees ana a bottle of Marlborough Sauvignon blanc for $70NZD.

Service slow (had to prompt for our breads) and meals quite nice, but for nearly $300 for family of four (2 adults, 2 kids) the bill leaft a sour taste

My first visit to the Waterfront Cafe & Bar was on a non-busy evening and the service was slow and lacking and the food was only perfect at the second attempt. My second visit, the one I'm reporting here, was significantly different. The service was snappy, the waitress was most attentive, there was no problem at all with ordering more drinks and all four dinner choices scored perfect ten-out-of-tens.

Oddly enough, the restaurant was extremely busy on this occasion and there were few if any empty tables. Although much busier, the staff seemed to get on with it far better than they did on a quiet evening. They really do work well under pressure. It was wonderful to note that standards are maintained when things are hectic. The chefs were quite brilliant and how they performed so well in such heat is beyond me. The aged fillets of beef and the lamb dishes were magnificent.

One of our party of four commented that his beef was the best he could ever remember. My wife commented that her lamb was superb. Rare praise from her!

I look forward to visiting again very soon. Finally, to anyone who is not familiar with Mangonui but who has read all the tourism bumph - I would unreservedly recommend a "fine dining" experience at the Waterfront over any of the greasy Fish & Chips outlets in town which aren't that inexpensive either.

It might be advisable to book - the Waterfont seems to be busy when you'd least expect it and vice versa.

This is one of the Restaurants who is always very welcoming. Good food, friendly owner and staff. The Waterfront Cafe & Bar is located on Mangonui Harbour with nice views. We just can recommend it highly.

Such delicious food. The duck were the juiciest most tender pieces I've ever eaten. Not to mention the accompanying kumara, beans (they were sooo soft!) and spinach. My fellow diner had a delicious seafood risotto, which tasted and looked great also. A must spot to dine in when you're up that way!
