Owner description: Arecibo Lighthouse & Historical Park, offers to the general public The Morillos Lighthouse from 1898, last Lighthouse built by Spanish Government in the island just before the Hispanic-American War. It was totally restored and opened to the public in 2001. In the surrounding areas, some replicas of elements of Puerto Rico history like Taino Village, Spanish Conquest with 3 ships, African Hut, Pirate Ship and the only salt-water aquarium in the island. Also Decks with the magnificent views of the Atlantic Ocean. You can access the "Splash by the Lighthouse" a wading pool area for kids and adults.

It's sad that a place like this is not promoted adequately so one can be prepared. For $12 adults and $10 children, you can spend an hour browsing around a tiny aquarium, go to a really mini zoo with about 10 animals, most of them domestic and go on a few small scaled pirate ship replicas and a Taino indian village. Unfortunately we did not come prepared, not knowing that the place also has a splash pool where you can enjoy some relief from the heat. Of course, we could've checked the website, where all the information is available.

My pet peeve of places in Puerto Rico is the woeful signage; for such a small place, we had to ask two different people where the aquarium was, as there were not signs indicating the different places, especially those out of the way. There is a nice boardwalk with an impressive view of the Atlantic Ocean and an 19th century restored lighthouse. If you come prepared for the pool area called Splash by the Lighthouse, then you will have a lot of fun. We plan on visiting again.

The Arecibo Lighthouse was built by the Spaniards and it's construction was completed in 1898 just before the Spanish-American war , it sits on a rocky hill called "'cerro de los morrillos" and for many decades had a live in operator that stayed there with his family. In the late sixties it was abandoned until it's restoration as the Arecibo Lighthouse and Historical Park. If you visit this place have your camera ready for great shots of the atlantic ocean. The Lighthouse itself is worth the visit but the overall area needs remodeling.

To the right of the lighthouse is a long beach with a small water pooled area where the waves hit the rocks and shoot into the air. ***CAUTION*** there is a "ghetto", as the police called it, that runs along the road behind the beach. We were careful to take our beach bag with us on walks, but were robbed of the bag while sitting by the water. Our bag, wallets, phones, money, and some things that can't be replaced were taken. The grab the bag run, run up the dunes, to paths that run to the ghetto. We saw to police officer in a car, but they appeared to be sleeping. Eventually the police responded and were very helpful. They even checked out some of the locals that were not dressed for the beach standing by the path looking for the next victim.
Beach and water hole are very pretty, just be careful.

On our recent trip to Puerto Rico we wanted to see the lighthouse. $12 for adults just to get on the park, I guess they think that it is a amusement park but it's not even close. We were there on a Saturday and there might have been 20 people there and the beach across the street was packed. Drop the admission to 5/3 them maybe pack the place. Not worth it too many other free lighthouses to see.
