“A great place to stay while in the San Jose, Costa Rica area”
4 of 5 bubbles Reviewed August 22, 2007

My wife and I stayed 4 days at Hotel Bougainvillea and loved it. This was our first time to Costa Rica and really didn't know much about the area in which we were staying, but the staff of Bougainvillea made our stay a pleasant experience. The gardens were beautiful and the hotel itself was well maintained. The staff was always helpful if we had questions and was able to get us transportation when needed. Instead of renting a car we decided to get around by taxi. The hotel hooked us up with one of the best driver's by the name of Mario. One day he took us to Paos Volcano, La Paz Waterfall and to many other places for a great price. We even had lunch with him at a great restaurant he recommended near La Paz which served the typical Costa Rican cuisine for a great price. All three of us ate a great mean for only $14.00. I wish I could remember the name of the place, but I can't. So, if you ever go to Bougainvillea and need someone to take you around I highly recommend Mario to be your driver for a day.

The restaurant at the hotel is pretty good, but can be a bit expensive for some things. They charge you for refills on coke and tea. If you are in a hurry you may want to eat somewhere else, because the servers don't usually seem to provide quick service. This just might Costa Rican thing, I'm not sure. I do have to say that it was my birthday when I was there and our waiter brought me a piece of cheesecake with strawberries and whip cream, with a candle on it. Plus, they played Happy Birthday on the player piano for me and everyone in the restaurant clapped. So that was pretty cool. We ordered room service once and we had our food in about 15 minutes. So I was impressed by that.

There is no air conditioning in the hotel but you really don't notice it unless you are in the room during the day. At night time it was quite comfortable with the windows open. The only thing that kind of bothered me was in the mornings when some dogs next to the hotel barked constantly. There is also a school next door to the hotel and so if you like to sleep in -- forget it. One morning, about 8:00, they had band practice outside and they played for over an hour. The drummer was really going to town, if you know what I mean. Of course, we were already up -- but again, if you like to sleep in you probably won't get to.

Overall, our experience at Hotel Bougainvillea was a good one. If we take a trip to the San Jose area again we will definitely stay at Bougainvillea.

We spent a week at the Bougainvillea, and we were absolutely thrilled with our choice. First, the location is excellent. Not too far from San Jose or the airport, but enough to feel like you are getting away from it all. Every staff member was helpful and courteous, from front desk, to restaurant, to housekeeping. They brought a crib to my room for my infant son and even changed his crib linens mid-week (didn't even ask). The restaurant is very reasonably priced and has an elegant but comfortable atmosphere. Try the "gallo pinto con huevos" for breakfast, plus the homemade yogurt. Rooms are spacious, beds very cozy. The highlight was the beautiful garden - the mornings were filled with butterflies and birds, and at night take a flashlight to the frog ponds! It is no surprise we saw many different types of visitors, families with children, business travelers, couples, and seniors. I highly recommend and will stay here again. If you are travelling with kids, I do not advise staying anywhere near San Jose. The Bougainvillea has free shuttle service to San Jose if you want to see museums and such, and Heredia is a much more family-friendly place to stay.

My husband and I stayed here on the first and last nights of our Costa Rica vacation. One of our favorite things about this hotel was the acres of beautiful gardens to explore. There is also a swimming pool and sauna, and tennis courts, though we didn't use any of those. The restaurant served very good food at a reasonable price. Rooms were comfortable, although they could use some new pillows. There is no air conditioning, but we were quite comfortable anyway, even though this was the start of the rainy season. Rooms do have cable TV and phones. The Costa Rican company that arranged our vacation had a car and driver to take us to and from the airport, which was about 20 minutes away. We would stay here again.

My wife, baby and I spent 4-5 nights at this great hotel on the front and tail end of a visit to Costa Rica. We were VERY happy that we chose to spend time here and not in downtown San Jose. The hotel was great. The staff was excellent. The restaurant was well worth it. I stil dream about their pescado al ajo ( yummy fish with tons of garlic). The gardens were definitely spectacular. We went into downtown, which was a big waste of time. The hotel has a great souvenir shop with very respectable prices.Take a taxi to to the nearby town of Moravia for some great souvenir shopping. There is a street with shop after shop of typical Costa Rican gifts to bring home to the family.

  • Liked — Gardens, restaurant, quiet

Stayed here two nights at the beginning of our trip, first hotel in Costa Rica & it was a great choice for a comfortable, clean hotel with nice English speaking staff, good restaurant, and beautiful gardens.

The hotel would be hard to find on one’s own, the taxi from the airport. seemed to loop around, up & down many small town streets. The neighborhood isn’t idyllic, although typical of the areas around SJ, but the hotel itself is just beautiful. We pulled up to the circular drive way and an entrance dripping with orchids. The front desk & staff were friendly & efficient, although occasionally under staffed. They offer free safe deposit boxes & will take photocopies of your passport & credit cards free of charge (we already had copies, but at customs they now recommend that you also have a photocopy of the CR passport stamp you receive – so we had them make photocopies of that). The hotel is reminiscent of a 1950’s hotel, well maintained with simply furnished, but highly spacious & very clean rooms with wonderful views (especially if you get a garden view room which I highly recommend). The gardens are meticulously maintained and took us over an hour to walk the short route, the mountains border it behind and create a beautiful setting and there are tennis courts & a lovely pool & sauna nestled within the gardens. The bathrooms were sizeable, most with a large standing shower, with shampoo/conditioner/soap dispenser. Great tasting water which they have tested regularly. There are two double beds in each room, a dresser, TV (some English stations) and table with two chairs. Each room has glass doors leading to a triangle shaped covered balcony with lounging chairs. For $100/nt + taxes, this was a great find, a great way to start or end a trip. The restaurant is elegant and reasonably priced, I recommend anything with their Bombay sauce (curry/coconut sauce). Breakfast $5-8 ($8 buffet was only OK, their fruit was surprisingly bad), lunch $10-15, dinner $10-20. They also offer a free shuttle to downtown SJ every 15min. I had also booked massages, manicures & pedicures here before coming (the reservations got a bit mixed up, but worked out OK in the end), $20 per 30min massage, $7 manicures, $11 pedicures in your room – great way to relax after a long flight.

We were traveling with a group, everyone enjoyed their stay here, very relaxing atmosphere -- many wished they had more time to stroll the gardens & hang out at the pool.

  • Liked — Spacious, clean, comfortable room with a great view & gardens
  • Disliked — A little out of the way, but worth it for the setting

Bougainvillea is a nice hotel in a Holiday Inn kind of way, which means a big impersonal hotel with long corridors and rooms on both sides. It is located in a nice residential area about 15 min from the airport and 15 min from downtown. It is so out of the way that we had to take the complementary hotel shuttle to another hotel 7 blocks from downtown to tranfer to our tour van for a tour we arranged at the hotel.

We stayed 2 nights at the end of our trip, where we stayed mostly at b&b and jungle lodges. Bougainvillea brought us back to civilization and creatures' comfort. There are a swimming pool and 2 tennis courts on the beautiful hotel ground. Internet in the lobby is free for the first hour, just ask the front desk for a time code. The free shuttle runs between 8 to 4 and taxi fare from downtown is around 3000 colons.

Our one-day tour to Irazu volcano, Cartago and Lankester Garden was much better than expected. It can be arranged at the tour desk in the hotel.

The hotel is very nice and comfortable for what it is; however, I feel it did not give us a Costa Rican experience. Depending on what you are looking for, I would stay in Alajuela if you are looking for a hotel close to the airport or in downtown San Jose if you want access to restaurants and shops. Downtown San Jose is really not as scary/boring as most guidebook/blog make it out to be.
