Owner description: Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Monkeyland first opened its gates to the public in 1998 amidst much skepticism, a sanctuary of this kind had never been attempted before; multiple primate species all running free and together in one big forest. But despite the fears it was a huge success and the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary has set a standard that other sanctuaries now aspire to. 12 hectares of indigenous forest is home to over 500 primates of 11 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Hanuman and Spectacled Langur, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

“Walk with the monkeys”
Reviewed July 21, 2014

We were in Knysna on holiday and I wanted to see everything. Monkeyland was an awesome experience. You walk with the monkeys in the sanctuary. Our tour guide was funny, informative and interactive. We enjoyed it and would recommend this to anyone.

“Fun in the forest”
Reviewed July 20, 2014

We visited Monkeyland as a family with two teenage sons and it was great fun! We went in the late afternoon on a 3.30pm tour which was good timing, as because it was a warm day the monkeys ate more so their food stocks had to be replenished and a lot of the monkeys that are normally up in the forest canopy came down for the food, including the only Gibbon in the park. He came walking right past us which was quite an experience! A group of Madagascan Lemur's with their black and white striped tails standing straight up also came past us which was quite a funny sight. The guide gave us all the information about the different types of monkeys and we saw 10 of the 11 species in the park. We highly recommend this tour.

“Monkey see, Monkey do!”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

I have been to many zoo's and parks before but never saw 12 different species of monkeys in the space of one hour. And the fact that they have more than enough food in a natural environment seemed as if they even enjoyed the experience too!

“Great Afternoon, lots of fun”
Reviewed July 16, 2014

Visited as part of a 3 park bundle. I think it was a total of $60 USD for for entrance into 3 parks. All three parks were excellent. Monkey Land was the best of all 3. From the second you walk in, monkeys are everywhere. Also they have a pretty great Lemur population. Beautiful creatures, if your in the area its a must stop. Lots of fun, tons of pictures. Our guide was also very good.

“a bit too 'Touristy'”
Reviewed July 15, 2014

Monkeyland is a good experience, the guides however make it really uncomfortable for 'Locals' with their over emphasis on 'how rare' or 'how dangerous' these primates are. This does however impress our overseas visitors. Not really worth the money for Locals.
