Owner description: Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Monkeyland first opened its gates to the public in 1998 amidst much skepticism, a sanctuary of this kind had never been attempted before; multiple primate species all running free and together in one big forest. But despite the fears it was a huge success and the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary has set a standard that other sanctuaries now aspire to. 12 hectares of indigenous forest is home to over 500 primates of 11 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Hanuman and Spectacled Langur, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

“Excellent experience”
Reviewed December 4, 2013 via mobile

Although our day started off on a sour note with the news that Birds of Eden was closed for maintenance, this was the last of the disappointments. Our experience in Monkeyland was splendid. Jacob, our German guide, needs a special mention for making the trip really worthwhile. Very enthusiastic and humorous, he made every effort to keep all in the group entertained. Seeing the primates up close and in a natural habitat was excellent. We were lucky to see just about all the species in the park, and enjoyed the afternoon walk thoroughly. Highly recommended trip for all ages.

Dear Kevin Thomas A
Thank you for your review. We appreciate all our reviews. I will make sure Jacob gets a copy of your review as he is one of our Volunteers and this will be excellent to add to his portfolio.

I would like to thank you for your understanding about Birds of Eden currently being closed due to the flood damage. We hope to open soon and that you will have the opportunity to come and visit us in the future.

Kindest Regards
Vijver

“Monkeyland”
Reviewed December 2, 2013

This was great fun and a nice place for friends and family to visit together to have a good and a very informaive time. Our guided tour exceeded the usual length so it was worth it. The tour guide was very informative and friendly too. I enjoyed seeing all the primates and watching them in the trees and right infront of me. I would reccommend it to anyone.

“Something different”
Reviewed December 1, 2013

Nice to see different species and not always the velvet monkey and baboons on the road. Watch out they steal your food, or throw stuff at you, or jump onto your heads.

“Loved It!!!”
Reviewed November 26, 2013

Such a lovely experience. We got to see all 10 species of monkeys in the park and it is good to see how well looked after the animals are. They are all free to leave the park but prefer to stay indoors. Our faverouts were the Cuppuccino monkeys with all their funny hairstyles and the white Ape.

Dear CrousA
Thank you for the review as we appreciate each and every review. I would like to thank you some extra for sharing those beautiful photos with us. I am so glad you enjoyed it and that you got to see all 8 the Species!! The Capuchins sure are great with their funky hairdo's! The White Ape was Atlas our Gibbon - he sure is amazing right? He tends to think he is a Capuchin!
We hope you will come and visit us again in the future!
Kindest Regards
