Owner description: Monkeyland Primate Sanctuary is part of the South African Animal Sanctuary Alliance (SAASA). Monkeyland first opened its gates to the public in 1998 amidst much skepticism, a sanctuary of this kind had never been attempted before; multiple primate species all running free and together in one big forest. But despite the fears it was a huge success and the world's first multi-species, free roaming primate sanctuary has set a standard that other sanctuaries now aspire to. 12 hectares of indigenous forest is home to over 500 primates of 11 different species; Squirrel, Capuchin, Howler, Vervet and Spider monkeys, Hanuman and Spectacled Langur, Saki, Gibbon, Ring-tailed and Black-and-white Ruffed Lemurs all enjoy the freedom to climb trees, forage amongst the undergrowth and live a life that is far removed from where they came. Ex-pets, laboratory animals and surpluses from zoos that used to live in cages now have the opportunity to behave in a way that is natural to them. Our experienced rangers will guide you on a one-hour tour of the forest, pointing out the different species whilst offering a wealth of information on their ecology and conservation. An added attraction is the 128m long suspension bridge that stretches across the forest canopy offering magnificent views of the surrounding forests.

The monkeyland sancturary was a suprise visit by us as we didnt had it in our original travel plans but we were so wrong. The whole experience was great our guide Ralph was brilliant very original and knowledgeable and the monkeys had loads of space to live a good live. The concept is good and the space is massive but you always be able to see and get close to the monkeys. We can only recommend to stop by when on the Garden route.

Monkeyland and Birds of Eden are really wonderful attactions found just outside Plettenberg Bay along the Garden Route. We visited with our 2 children and spent at least half the day there and they didn't get bored once. Upon arrival, you walk through the curio store and restaurant and wait until your tour starts. We got there early and were the only people on the tour which was really nice. You are met by your tour guide and you enter the forest. There are so many monkeys and lemurs around and the tour guide gives you tons of information during the tour. You can stop and look as long as you like and as long as you obey the rules there really are no problems. Just before the end of the tour you cross a very high swing bridge - it's quite something.

After Monkeyland we visited Birds of Eden. This tour you do on your own. Upon entering, it feels like a tropical paradise. There are wooden walkways, waterfalls, streams and lots and lots of greenery. And of course - many different birds.

I would definitely recommend this attraction to everyone travelling through the area. From little kids to adults - enjoyed by all.

A interesting look into the lives of monkeys and a better understanding of why we as humans should just leave animals in nature where they belong. The quides are well informed and eager to answer all your guestions.

Our daughter loves funny animals, the not so -often -found- ones and we headed for Monkeyland! Besides that the park is well organized, the animals well treated and cared for, we loved the little Makis! King Julian from Madagaskar also featured there to our girl's delight!

The one Maki came down, checked us ( the group) out, walked past and promptly placed himself in a meditation position with absolute concentration ... sitting like a little Buddha meditating on the sun coming through the trees early morning!

So classic! So we left him in peace contemplating his SUN.

Dear Euronovelties A - I am so glad that King Julian and the Ring Tail lemurs amused your little one. I just wanted to thank you for the photos you loaded! Those ringtails sure do love their sunbathing!! I often find myself wishing I could plop down beside them!
