“FANTASTIC GITE / FANTASTIC LOCATION”
Reviewed July 20, 2016 for a stay in July 2016

We’ve just returned from a week at La Conciergerie, the perfect French gite in an ideal location.

This impressive property is set in the grounds of a private family owned hotel, the grounds themselves are huge and boast beautiful well cared for gardens with an expanse of lawns, flowering shrubs, trees, a pond and even dovecotes...it’s more like a very pretty private park than just a garden.

The gite is accessed by large ornamental wrought iron gates that lead up the gravel driveway to the hotel and there is ample car parking directly outside. At night these gates are closed electronically making your vehicle very secure indeed (you’re given a remote control electric fob to open and close the gates should you need to come or go after dark).

The owners of the hotel, Caroline and Luc, were very welcoming on our arrival. They showed us around the gite explaining where everything was and how everything worked and told us to call across to the hotel should we need anything. We didn’t need to trouble them and from this point on we felt it was like our own gite, (we wish it was), and we were given total privacy.

The gite itself is fantastic, being tastefully decorated in a very chic rustic fashion and has everything you could possibly need for a comfortable stay, it is very much a case of just add food!

An unexpected bonus was that the beautiful gardens also came with a dog, a most lovely gentle springer spaniel who greeted us every morning with a happy wagging tail. We would have liked to bring him home with us but thought that Caroline and Luc may have noticed that he was missing when we left.

The location of this gite is also excellent, we travelled from the ferry port in Dunkirk and it only took us an hour to get there on very straight forward roads. Sainghin-en-Mélantois is a lovely village with a Carrefour Express mini supermarket only a few minutes’ walk away and two boulangeries around the corner. Our favourite was La Boulangerie Dhaussy, which is the older and more traditional French bakery, where we purchased all of our breakfast pastries and bread each morning.

This gite is also ideally situated for general sightseeing and shopping, by car you can be in the huge Euralille shopping centre in 5 minutes, walking down quaint cobbled Belgian streets in 15 minutes or at many of the Somme War Memorials within half an hour. All of these places are accessed by good roads and would be no problem for even a novice euro driver.

So in summary we had a brilliant stay and were extremely impressed with all aspects of the accommodation and the very pleasant manner of the hosts, so much so we are hoping to return next year. We would highly recommend this gite to anyone who appreciates traditional homely French charm rather than some boring eurobox owned by some faceless holiday company.

Merci beaucoup à Caroline et Luc pour notre séjour inoubliable !

Amicalement, la famille Morgan, du Pays de Galles

“Lovely Gardens, Impractical Property”

We stayed at this cottage for a week and found it very impractical, particularly the kitchen and bathroom. Limited workspace makes food preparation difficult and all cutlery and crockery is kept in the dining room so you find yourself walking back and forth a lot. There is limited kitchen cupboard space and as most are stocked with house contents, finding room for personal provisions was a problem. The cooking pots are a health hazard and I chose not to use them. I note from other reviews that previous occupants had made the owner aware of the poor condition of the pots but this has not been addressed.

The property could be much cleaner – loads of cobwebs, toilet bowls badly stained, cupboards are dusty, floors need attention. As guests have to pay an additional 60 euro for cleaning, we expected better. The cellar, which houses the vacuum and iron, is very smelly and dirty as is everything in it – not pleasant at all. This place needs an all-over, intensive clean

I think the house décor was intended to be shabby chic, however, the reality is very much just shabby. Painted throughout in shades of grey and beige with all furnishings in similar tones, leads to a rather depressing environment . My son asked if it was formerly a prison house as it was so sparse and dull. There are no blinds in the lounge and as other reviewers have mentioned, one does rather lack privacy and shade from sun. Again, the host seems unconcerned about such views. The sofa in the lounge only seats three comfortably, so we had to use a deckchair as the other available seating is formal.

The bathroom has no blind and you do feel rather exposed without some shielding – we used a towel as a blind to make us feel more comfortable. The bath has a handheld shower attachment and as there is no shower curtain makes for a rather awkward showering experience to ensure the place does not get drenched – particularly for kids. There is also a low beam directly above the bath, so for adults banging your head is inevitable.

There is very limited tourist information available in the house and we were told to go to the Lille Tourist Information. This incidentally has to be the worst TI we have ever visited – Tripadvisor comments would back my view. The cottage does have wi-fi but this does seem temperamental as is the TV reception.

The property is set on a main road so there is significant road noise. Also, there is an airport nearby and the planes can be quite noisy. Although the gardens are lovely, some of the decking next to the patio doors is very loose and we tripped on it several times. The garden furniture is rather shabby and not very uncomfortable..

As with some other reviewers, we found the host to be rather cold. His main interest was in telling us to use the most economical settings for electrical items and turning down fridge settings. Incidentally, we found the fridge does not work well at all – some of our food perished as it does not seem to stay cold. On departure, our host’s main concern was that we did not forget to pay the 60 euro cleaning fee – we were reminded three times in five minutes. Clearly this is solely a money making venture with little thought given to comfort, cleanliness, practicality or tourist information for guests. Having had to agree to the owner's lengthy lists of rules and regulations before the stay, we expected much more from this property. Sadly, we were very disappointed.

On a positive note, the local boulangerie is excellent and the staff were helpful and friendly. Likewise, the staff at the nearby 4 Canton Metro could not have done more to help us providing information about using the services and where to go in Lille.

From experience, there are much better and cheaper property options available with warmer hosts who genuinely care about their guests holiday experience.

“A lovely gite, set in beautiful gardens.”

My husband & I stayed for four nights with our 16 year old daughter. Plenty of space, with an especially attractive dining area, filled with light, overlooking the garden. Bath with hand held shower but also a cloakroom downstairs & separate toilet upstairs. Nice crockery etc but best to bring any special kitchen equipment you like using if you are intending to cook a lot. Very comfortable beds.

Metro nearby. Free parking. Old Lille so worth visiting. Also Bruges. Free parking in street 10 mins walk from centre. Very helpful host, willing to give tips, directions, lend maps etc. Lille Zoo worth a visit. Free entry. City cruisers on offer at metro - Ribour, an extra, reasonably priced means of transport. Bakery, a few steps away from gite & mini Carrefour supermarket beside church in village centre both excellent.
