We stayed one night in the Moon Deluxe Room, with breakfast and dinner. Upon our arrival, the staff welcomed us warmly, checking was a breeze. The nice reception lady lead us to our room and gave us a nice short intro for all the facilities.

The room looked out to the lake and is a pretty sight during the day, but nothing much in the night and curtains must be drawn at night as it can be seen through from outside.

We enjoyed the dinner very much. The restaurant has catered to our special request of no pork meal and the food is served in a small portion, not quite fine dining, but close.

The 2 service staff in the restaurant are wonderful. Breakfast is nice too.

The hotel is near to the sun moon lake cable car centre which is just 10 mins away.

Overall, it is a pleasant stay and will not hesitate to stay again if we were to visit Sun Moon Lake.

Tip : To get to the hotel from TaiChung station, take a bus from TaiChung Station and alight at the busstop at Shuishe Pier(水社), from there take a ferry ride to Itacho Pier, where the hotel is located. The boat ride is on NT100 and the ticket is valid for a full day's use.

After reading some negative reviews on Crystal resort SML, honestly, I was managing my own expectations for our check in. My husband and I stayed for 2 nights in the Deluxe lake view room (Moon). The facade and some aspects of the resort may not be what one expects of a small luxury hotel. However, at the end of the trip, we felt that it was really much better than expected.

Good:
* Choose the correct room type. Pay to face the lake (moon), you'll be rewarded with a tranquil lake view every time of the day. This jetty (Itasho) is more peaceful than Shueishe where you are constantly bombarded by hordes of tourist if you have a lake view.

* Attentiveness of staff. The reception staff not only gave us directions to the ropeway from behind her desk, she took the initiative to walk out with us to the corner of the street to point us in the right direction. A staff serving at the restaurant had a very sweet disposition. She was unassuming and quiet in her ways, and constantly making the effort to interact with her guests.

* Comfort of the room. We booked the deluxe lake view room (moon) and everyday, it makes us want to just lounge around in the room with a cup of tea enjoying the excellent view.

* Food. Our room package comes with breakfast and dinner. The dinner spread was wonderful. 1st night we had a 8 course, western styled dinner prepared with local produce. 2nd night, we had a wonderful spread of buffet. Breakfast was less fanciful but good enough.

* wide selection of TV/ english channels. Don't need to borrow DVD from their video library. The channels will keep you more than occupied.

* Good Location. Just next to the jetty (itasho) makes day trips out more accessible. And the many food streets are just 1mins walk away. However, if taking the nantou bus from HSR then can be a hassle as the buses all stop at shueishe. You can hope into a ferry at shueishe jetty (<10mins) to cross over to Itasho jetty or change to hop into a local bus. Best way is get into a cab from HSR straight to the resort.

Can be better:
* there were some defects in the room. ie: stains on the carpet, dents in the cabinets, a little problem with the hot water supply which was quickly resolved, ugly facade of the resort, no swimming pool and the gym is tiny. All these can be overlooked.

Enjoy Crystal SML, it is not that bad :) Hope this review helps.

Room Tip: Choose the deluxe lake view room (moon). Faces the jetty directly. Don't need to pay for the room with balcony. You can lounge on the bay window, very tranquil and relaxing.

We stayed here for 2 nights, and booked the Moon Deluxe Lake View room, which comes with breakfast and dinner.

Room

The room was interesting, as it has an open concept, and mirrors everywhere. Which essentially means that you can't lock any of the rooms (eg. toilet, shower room), and you should only stay in the room with someone you are comfortable with. We had 2 adults and 1 kid in the room, so I asked for an extra bed, which cost $1500 TWD and that comes with 2 meals. When I got there, I realised that the king size bed in the room was very big and 3 of us fitted in nicely with space to move about. Nonetheless, my daugther was intrigued by the small little bed set out for her, and made herself comfortable in her nest. The extra bed is small, and will only fit in someone who is less then 1.6M. Room has a great view, you can see the sun moon lake just by sitting at the window ledge, and I found this jetty more tranquil compared to the main jetty (水社)which has a lot of tourist from mainland China. But the windows turn into a reflective mirror at night, so keep the curtains closed.

Service

The greatest thing about this hotel is the wonderful service and smiles from their staff. From the moment we arrived at the hotel, we were greeted with smiles. We were checked in at no time, and the staff gave us a good tour of the room, explaining all the facilities available. The restaurant staff were also very friendly, and presented my daugther with some local cookies when she appeared to be grumpy.

Food

Breakfast was buffet on one day, and another day it was a la carte selection from the menu. Dinner was fusion food that came in small quantity fine dining style for one day, and chinese style the next day. Food quality was good, and quantity was too much for us to finish on all the days.

Location

Hotel was at a good location, just 3 mins walk from the jetty. 7-11 and cultural street was just steps away, so we could always get some stuff that we need when we wanted.

If I visit sun moon lake again, I will consider staying in this hotel .

Room Tip: book the rooms that faces the lake so that you can wake up to a beautiful dawn.

Stayed here for 4 nights on leisure with the main aim for rest and relaxation. This hotel was chosen as it was featured in the SLH group, but our experience had left a lot to be desired and does not do justice to other hotels featured in the same group. Our stay was marked by too many flaws that felt beyond acceptable, on reflection of the SLH brand and the value for money.

The best part of this hotel from our experience includes: -
- the largely spaced lake room (upgraded from the VIP Moon room) with awesome panoramic views
- L'Occitane (Verbena range) toiletries and high quality amenities
- proximity to the beach that enables the sounds of waves hitting the shores to be heard from the room
- very comfortable bed but length is slightly short at an estimated 6 foot
- relative English capability of staff (compared with other rural parts of Taiwan) but overall, still considered insufficient for a hotel it projects to be although a couple of staff members have a good handle on English
- efficiency in organising local taxi transfers to Taichung pre-arrival and departure
- slightly above average food provision - generally good to excellent quality, flavours quite well balanced but not high intensity
- good range of fairly up to date DVDs available for free rental
- very genuine recommendations and arrangements for local sightseeing

The issues we had with this hotel include: -
- exterior of the hotel far from reflecting the class of a luxury hotel, in fact it is a corner lot of a row of shops, built about 10 storeys high
- intermittent dank-damp scent in the room that was slightly unpleasant
- clogging of the shower area drain due to accumulated hair
- poor wifi connectivity in the room resulting in more than half a dozen times contacting front desk when they finally decided to put an extra modem in the room, which offered an extra port of connection but did not fully resolve the issue
- minibar fridge only consisted of 2 small cans of soft drinks, otherwise empty
- noise issues from street locals and tourists with raised voices as well as the garbage collection service
- small common area at room levels and housekeeping staff may occupy up to 70-80% of that space during service
- small fitness area with 3 cardio machines and a single exercise ball with incorporated resistance band system, without any free weights or other resistance training options
- buffet food were kept in Bain Marie's but were not warm enough throughout duration of service, best to go at the start of the buffet service if you want hot food
- lack of observed senior supervisory figure at the restaurant and front desk
- offer of a good 8 course degustation menu was done in lighting a too bright and lack of white table cloth and complementing wine option
- restaurant service staff speaks very basic/elementary English, although friendly and helpful
- issues that we encountered that were raised to staff was received politely but does not appear to be taken seriously and no follow-up offered

Overall, we were pleased with some aspects of our room that provided the rest and relaxation we much needed, but the flaws did outweigh the better parts of our experience. The customer service, food, interior and external design fell short of what we expected from the SLH brand.

Room Tip: The lake room has the best views and VIP rooms are on level 6-8, bearing in mind that level 4 does not exist. The moon room has a single direct lake view. The sun room whilst bigger than the moon room, has more limited lake view. If you are just after the room and nothing else, go for the Dawn room. If you are after a nice view but less so of space, go for the moon room. If you are after more space then view, go for the sun room. If you are after view and space, go for the lake room.

It was rather difficult getting to the hotel by public bus (from HSR Taichung Station) as we alighted at the wrong side of the lake. After getting some directional help from the friendly locals, we managed to find our way to the hotel.

The hotel is strategically located next to the lake and there were interesting food shops around it.
We stayed in the Moon Room, which was of reasonable size and it was clean. Our hotel package includes afternoon tea, buffet dinner, breakfast and boat cruise. The area was rather busy as we watch the boats come and go. However, I truly appreciate the tranquility after all the buzzing activities had ceased in the evening.

We found the staff very helpful in their recommendations to shops in the area (i.e. handmade egg rolls). The staff even provided advice on the time to catch the correct bus back.

Overall, we had a pleasant stay.

Room Tip: Go for a room with a view.
