The hotel is what you expect from a nice hotel in a big city, it has many amenities like gym and spa, and the food is cheaper than on an equivalent hotel in the US, and it offers a breakfast buffet with many different options (western options as well).

I stayed at the Monarch Plaza Hotel on a recent business trip to Taiwan. Overall, this is a great hotel to stay in and has decent prices for their rooms. They advertise as a five-star hotel. That was probably true at one time, but I think that rating may be a bit dated. This is indeed a beautiful hotel that is well maintained with an exceptionally friendly and helpful staff. However, some of the little things that distinguish a 5-star hotel from 3- or 4 star hotels were missing. For example, the towels in the bathroom, while clean, were clearly old and well used. There was a significant lack of power outlets in the room and no USB outlets in the room, The beds were very hard and the wiring for things like the lights and TV were jury-rigged in such a way that they would not pass code in the US and were a potential fire hazard in my opinion.
However, the place is still gorgeous and the staff were top-notch. The reception employees were beyond helpful, answering every question and providing insight on a wide range of queries. They even set up a sightseeing tour itinerary and hired a car for the day to take us to the sights. They coulld not have been more helpful or friendly and everyone of them spoke English very well. The housekeeping staff did a great job and I never even saw them. They have doormen who open the front doors for you each time you enter or leave. The main restaurant features a breakfast, lunch, and dinner buffet that serves a variety of local foods as well as other more american/western foods so you have plenty of options to choose from. The food was all very good and the prices for the buffet were fairly inexpensive. Were I to rate this hotel I woudl probably give it 4-stars, with the potential to reach 5-stars if they updated their power, got new towels, and softer beds. However, I would stay here again without hesitation.

For all the beauty of a stone facade and a full on marble bathroom, it is clear that this place was built to last. The beds were comfortable and the room was generous by Asia standards. The shower leaked, the knob was stiff with wear, and the walls has water deposits on them. The breakfast was ok, lots of variety, but definitely more for Asian tastes (understandably). Only one outlet in the bedroom at the desk—this is where the property shows its age—for those of us with devices to charge, this is a no go. The staff are pleasant and other than them requiring a swim cap at the pool I found them to be pleasant.

With 8°C outside temperature in the month of February the air conditioning inside the restaurant and the hall is terribly low. This is the first time I see customers having breakfast wearing windbreakers! Moreover the choice at the breakfast is very poor.
Other than that rooms are very comfortable (and warm) and it's located only 15 minutes from Taiwan airport. Yes, at the end of the day I recommend this hotel.

Overall the hotel is alright and you can stay there for a night....but not much longer. There is a shuttle to the airport, but the operating hours did not match our flight schedule. However, the staff helped to organize a taxi and was kind enough to arrange breakfast boxes. The rooms are well equipped, but pretty dark since they are more like a long corridor with only a window at the end. There is a shopping mall nearby where you can have dinner or do some decent shopping, However, the way to down-town is too long if you have no whole day. It is an airport hotel.
