We asked our tour guide what was the best night market in taipei and he suggested shilin as it was the largest in taipei, his only warning was to watch out for thieves and back alleys.

It was easy to get to using the train. We walked from our hotel to Taipei station and it was a 5 minute train ride to shilin night market costing $20 NTD, that works out to around eighty cents American. Once off the train there are signs directing you to the market and it's only a minute walk.

This market does not dissapoint! It's a mix of fair and strip mall. The streets are lined with amazing food and you can get anything from a sausage the size of a 5 years Olds arm to fresh squid on a stick. Lots of sweets as well, everyone kept talking about the the stinky bun. They described it as a bun that literally smells of feces but apparently tastes like heaven. We smelt the buns but the smell alone could make me vomit so I couldn't bring myself to try it.

We ended up buying all of our souvenirs at the market. 6 t-shirts, 8 magnets and 10 mini themed coin purses; we have a lot of people to buy for back home. All of our stuff cost us under $1500 NTD which is around $50 US

We played fair games where I won myself a snorlax and then found a specialty cotton candy maker who spun me a made to order minion. We felt safe in the market and it was my favourite part of taipei

Market was ok. Most vendors were selling the same thing and its very touristy. The food was good altho it's a bit higher priced than other local night markets. Nothing much special here. Worth a visit if it's your first time in Taipei. If not, there are other better options.

Being the largest of Taipeis markets they say you havent done Taiwan until youve done the Shilin night market. It has everything! They sell clothes, shoes, bags and food. I found an old perfume that I used to wear that had been retired. Its fairly easy to get to on the metro, just get onto the redline to go to Jiantan or Shilin staion. The latter is a bit of a walk from the market but clearly marked with signs from the station.Jiantan finds you right there in the back and theres a lovely fruit mart right there too. Its so busy usually so not somewhere you want to try and nip in and out of and not as orderly as the other markets. I didn't find any shoes my size (Womens 9) mostly just Asian sizes but clothes for all but not XL and above. Do try and leave for the metro before 11:30 as the rails stop at 12 but even before then everyone is leaving the market at the same time and its hard to get on! No toilets there we could find so best use at the station. Food was amazing! Great to go around 8 when its still filling and just lose yourself for a few hours. 6-7 is too early and majority of the stalls were still closed.
