“retreat into the mountains”
Review of Smangus

The Tai Ya village in the mountain is very charming, with a restaurant and a simple shop serving the tourists. The highlight is of course the hike to find the ancient, gigantic trees the next morning. It was about 11kms one way, so the hike took us 3.5 hour, plus the time stopping for photos and loo stops. It's just right for an overnight stay. The mountain roads are narrow and winding, hence the control of the traffic. Inbound is after 3pm, after outbound have left. Worth a visit. By the way, the restaurant serves very good food, which you need to book in advance.

This beautiful village is worthy to visit. A 4-5 hours mountain trail will bring you to see ancient cypress trees. In order to avoid crowded tourists, try not to come during the weekends. Book your accommodation ahead 1 or 2 months ago. Spend a night or two, experience the tranquil in the deep mountain, meet the friendly villagers, and learn their culture. You won't regret if you did.

We went on a over night trip to smangus with friends and it was a very rewarding experience. The hike to the see the giant trees was tiring but well worth it. The accomodation and dining options were a bit limited but you cant really expect much at such a remote location. Worth the long drive from taipei.
