I'm lucky to have the opportunity to travel and dine in some lovely restaurants. Les Sarments was
One of the best dining experiences we've had. From the extraordinary intimate garden terrace to the service, food and wine, it was perfect in every way. Should be rated as a 5 star.

You can easily walk by the restaurant "Les Sarments" in Puyloubier because it is in a small street which is not very inviting, however check out the garden on the opposite side of the restaurants entrance, a delight. They offer a special formula (three prices) with a choice from the black board (entrée - plat - fromage - dessert) which will not be to everybody's agreement if you are in search of a cheap lunch style "plat du jour". We went for the plat - fromage formula which was excellent and not too heavy for lunch. Professional waiter, friendly and nice to our dog. Perfect for a romantic outdoor lunch if you are touring around the montagne Sainte Victoire.

I visited again Les Sarments with friends on a Friday evening in June. The garden was in a charming setting but the furniture was old and faded. No one had bothered to maintain the garden so it was full of old leaves from last year. The food was nice, small portions as usual.
When we arrived at 19.30 there were one couple, later three business men arrived.

This place is just too expensive for what you get and many people in the area thinks the same.
I wish they could get their act together and combine a nice menu versus a reasonable price.
Last year I was served a cod in a mustard sauce, I will never forget how nice it was.
Many years ago when Madame Gabrielle ran this place you had to book several days in advance to get a table. I wish it could again be a place we like to go to for an affordable and nice meal during.

We happened upon Les Sarments while driving around the exquisitely beautiful Mt. Stainte-Victoire, made famous to us by the book by Jean Verdun (text) and Laurencine Lot (photos). Les Sarments turned out to be the best restaurant we have eaten on this trip, which included one three-starred Michelin temple of gastronomy in Paris (ugh!). The courtyard setting was beautiful, well shaded by the trees and the service wonderfully friendly. The cuisine was "just original enough," with surprises at every turn, but luscious, tasty food at every bite, with "langoustine bon-bons" just out of the oven on a bed of cold, marinated cucumbers the highlight for this writer. It gets one fork and no stars from Michelin, but is the place we would eat any time we're within fifty miles of this remote village in scenery heaven.

Les Sarments is a rare find, in a small village, 30 minutes east of Aix en Provence, at the eastern end of the gloriously beautiful Route de Cezanne. The outdoor dining experience in the garden is romantic and lovely; the indoor dining room is fine, but would advise waiting for a clear night in the garden. The food we had was superb, surprising. The hostess (who did all the serving at this small restaurant both times we visited) is lovely, refined, gracious.
