We loved this hotel on the beach. Our room was very roomy and beautiful. Great view of the beach. Monkeys and iguanas everywhere. The restaurant was great and the sunsets were beautiful. The hotel is secluded so if that is what you are looking for this one is for you. Everyone at Sugar Beach were friendly and helpful.

This is our second year at this hotel which blends organically into the seemingly private beachfront property. The surroundings are tropically beautiful, populated with iguanas and howler monkeys. The luxury in this hotel is not in the finishes but in the uncrowded feel. The multiple buildings are spread out, centered by a lobby and outdoor restaurant. We never had a meal when all of the (18?) tables were occupied.
The beach was expansive enough to feel like you were sitting alone in the cove. The only crowding was in the shade during the afternoon! There are comfortable sun lounges, but several more would be welcome. Swimming was a bit rough and rocky at times.
We stayed in a 2 room Master Suite with a view of the ocean and the small, lovely, infinity-edge pool. The bedroom was air conditioned, the adjoining "living room" was not. There were terraces and seating with each room. The rooms were clean and comfortable, though some of the furnishings could use an update. We had plenty of hot water for showers.
A simple, satisfying breakfast is included with the room rate. Otherwise, the restaurant is limited in variety and style. The waitstaff and chef were very accommodating when we brought our fresh catch back to the hotel and prepared our fish several different ways for our meals during our stay (a highlight!).
The service was warm and welcoming, but not proactive. I recommend having a car to best enjoy the surrounding towns. With the newly paved road we were able to enjoy the towns south of Sugar Beach to set out on excursions and for meals.

I am happy to hear this is your second trip to Sugar Beach, we appreciate so much that our guests make a return visit! I also appreciate the detail in your comments and would like to share one improvement in case you can make a third visit...our sister hotel in Alajuela recently hired a wonderful chef who has been working with our Potrero staff and introducing many delicious specials that we are now offering to expand our menu. We did, I we apologize for this, take some time to respond to that note our guests were offering. Thank you again for a helpful review.

Thoroughly enjoyed our stay. The beach is beautiful, perfect for body surfing and not many other people to have to share it with. We enjoyed the pool in the afternoons, it is very pretty. The food was pretty good, not great, would've liked some daily specials.
Had such an awesome massage from Marjorie that I splurged and had a second one a couple days later, I would highly recommend her.
I spotted a lot of interesting birds, iguanas and finally got a close up look at a family of howler monkeys.
We were there 4 days and had not rented a car. I would recommend doing so, I personally would've liked a bit more diversion and taxi rides are expensive.
My only complaint was that a rather large yoga group was there when we were, it was hard to get our meals served warm and in a timely fashion when they were also being served.

Thank you for the note about Marjorie! We will also continue to recommend her to guests requesting a massage. I do want to apologize on behalf of the restaurant staff who failed to provide you with attentive and proper service. The presence of a large group in the restaurant should never mean that other guests are left waiting or without a great dining experience. We now have a beachfront Palapa where we can seat parties of more than 15 guests and balance the wait staff so all enjoy the great service they deserve!

Just got back from a wonderful 6 day trip with my entire family where we stayed for the first time at Hotel Sugar Beach. We stayed in the 5 bedroom beach house, with an impressive master bedroom and large kitchen/living room. The hotel is located in a tropical wooded setting, so Iguanas and monkeys (heard but never saw) are around the property which to us was part of the charm. The food was very good, and the waiter named Victor was one of the best I have ever met.
To me what makes this a wonderful property is the quiet and beautiful beach. You can find nicer beaches in Costa Rica, but they are crowded with tourists. My family stayed on the beach for 4 hours one day and we hardly saw another person. Located 30-60 minutes away from all the popular attractions, like Flamingo Beach and Tamarindo.

Thank you very much for taking the time to review Hotel Sugar Beach. Victor has been with us for more than 15 years and inspires us all to be authentic, hospitable and, as you say, memorable! We are also blessed with a beautiful beach. So great that you were able to enjoy the beach and then share that experience. All the best!

The Good: Fantastic location on a beautiful and private cove. Nice gardens with surrounding dry forest. Pleasant little swimming pool. The Bad: Booked most expensive rooms, but they were shabby: rings on tables from glasses, broken tiles, wood beams eaten by termites, cracks in walls. The Ugly: Food was overpriced for what you got and not very interesting (warm french fries, warm breaded calamari, seafood rice with perhaps 7 actual pieces of seafood). Had an issue with breakfast where one of us wanted to substitute eggs and plantains for a bit of fruit. Impossible, apparently. After that, surly waiter. Complaints and suggestions were met with a blank stare by the "head of operations" who refused to give me the contact information of the owners. At check out there were so many people complaining about irregularities on their bill that we had to leave or miss our flight (and hope they were honest with our voucher). Overall: Beautiful spot with poor management. Note: Rather than fix any problem, Operations Manager just gave me his e-mail. I told him not to apologize on TripAdvisor later -- better to fix the problem now! Blank stare.

Thank you for sharing your experience as we do have moments or lapses in service that need to be addressed. I wish we could go back to the day you had breakfast and allow you the substitutions. Since your visit we have changed how breakfast is presented and ordered in order to allow some flexibility and also larger appeal for tastes and dietary needs. I regret that your stay had several bumps, and not just a difficult morning. If you can travel again from Monteverde, Costa Rica, please give us another chance to deliver top notch service.
