“A great way to end our trip”
Reviewed April 23, 2012

After two action packed weeks of adventure in CR we were ready for some relaxing at the beach and what a great place to do just that! We stayed in room 22 which is a std ocean front. The room was basic but met all of our needs (kids 9 & 10 and 2 adults). the staff even brought us a mini fridge to hold snacks. The staff, restaurant, wildlife, pool, and beach were all fantastic. Sugar Beach is a beautiful, quiet out of the way spot that we would definately recommend.

My family of 5 spent 8 nights and 9 days at Hotel Sugar Beach and it is our favorite vacation destination so much so we have been back twice. The Hotel is personal quiet and full of wildlife. We stayed in the 5 bedroom house on the beach and were visited by Elvis a cotemonde(sp?) A family of 9 howler monkeys visited us twice. The pool is COOLED so on hot days it feels like heaven. Best food including unbeatable Lava Cake Seabass and Pina colatas served in the open air restaruant over looking the beach by Victor and waitstaff (they are delightful). The hotel is a true eco resort and conciencious of the enviornement. You have the beach all to yourselves. the staff at the front desk are so sweet. we will return again to our favoirte hotel sugar beach and to paradise. Our side trips included booking two scuba dives on the Brindisi one to catalina islands and one to the bat islands it was surreal and so fantastic. We visited tamarindo 3 times for fun and the Westin down the road. It was too big and cold for our needs. We love the resturants in neigboring Flamingo if you can pull yourself away from the great food right there. Its A Dream Vacation at Hotel Sugar Beach Enjoy. Traveled to Sugar Beach for a dear friend's wedding a few weeks ago and it was perfect. The staff were super friendly and accommodating. We had a deluxe room and it was very spacious and had a pretty porch. The only downside to the room were the number of daddy long legs...LOTS. But I guess they are just part of the wildlife! And it would have been mice to get one of the "floating" refrigerators in our room. Perhaps they can add them to all the deluxe rooms. Given the distance to any store, it would be nice to be able to keep a few snacks and beverages cool in the room.

You must order a Ron y Pina Liquada!!! So frothy and delicious.

We stayed for 4 nights with our kids, 11 and 7. We loved the natural setting with the iguanas and monkeys all around. The beach was nice, but there are plenty of other beaches around with better swimming and toys to rent. Having a car is a must because there are so many beautiful beaches in the area. You definitely need to make sure what room you are asking for. There are some really old rooms that have not been renovated in a long time. When I made the reservation, I requested a newly renovated room not realizing that those rooms only have king beds (made the reservation on-line). So when we were shown to the older room, I was upset. We ended up getting upgraded to a two-bedroom "dome" type house right on the beach. The staff was great. The restaurant and food were also extremely good. My family had a fantastic time!

Thanks to the GPS we rented from the car rental, we had no trouble finding the hotel. Without it, it would have been impossible as there are no signs. We were very surprised when we got to our room because it was much bigger than we thought. Turns out they had given us an upgrade to a master suite instead of the standard we had reserved. So we had two large rooms, both with balconies that looked out onto the ocean. It was very clean and comfortable. We had just come from 8 days in the rainforest and ended up seeing just as many monkeys, parrots and ctenosaurs outside our room -- and they were much easier to photograph. I would definitely return.

This place has many of the idyllic ingredients...isolated beach, a fair amount of wildlife, perfect surf and nice sunsets. BUT...

Room quality ....
3 bedroom beach house. 450US per night. Expensive for what we got. Paid the same for a 5 star 2 bedroom lux villa with pool in Tamarindo, (Cala Luna) This place was verging on a nuclear bunker, taking minimlism to an extreme.Decor and comfort lacked quality and character, bearing in mind cost.

This was a theme running throughout the hotel...ie spartan. Eg in restaurant, where staff were actually very nice, nothing was left on the tables. Felt like a very efficiently run institution. No warmth or thought given to decor..No extras that could be lifted it would seem...no flowers, decorations, condiments...

Staff....
As we have said before, staff make or break a stay for us. No welcome on our arrival with 4 small kids and lots of bags, had to ask for help.
They pretty much left us alone for the week, we could have died in our nuclear bunker in paradise and no-one would have noticed! On our departure, no-one saw us off in any shape or form, and no-one asked us at any stage whether we were happy with our stay. Despite having paid them 2,250 US 3 months in advance, which they were very meticulous about taking. They rely too much about the beauty of the place. It is a restaurant with rooms, not really an hotel.

That said, the restaurant staff who were obviously not owners were very kind and courteous. Their efficiency however warned you they did not have time to stop. Obviously a message from the invisible management.

Food
Food was fine and not expensive. They had a happy hour ONCE per week!! And made a big deal of it...5 to 7 on a Friday.(not sure this is every Friday) So make sure you plan to stay on a Friday! This reflects the spartan efficiency of the institution. No other organised events that we came across in our 5 nights.

Tours
WE had an expensive horse riding tour 35 US for one hour per child, were left standing for 30 mins after it was over before being picked up in a very battered taxi lacking belts and front bumper. No explanation given. Complained to hotel as they had arranged it, and they did not come back to me on this. Not happy. Poor customer service.

Management need to be visible and need to show they value their guests.

Saying that we enjoyed our stay as the natural surrounds were beautiful and it was easy to talk to other guests.

In summary, dont think we would return and would hesitate to recommend.
