“Best meal on the Pacific Coast!”
Reviewed August 1, 2014

My girlfriend and I were personally greeted by the French owner as we walked by this spot and his personality lured us in! He was so inviting and walked us over to the chalk board menu - I liked that they didn't have printed out menus! He went over each of the specials of the night, and he noticed our reluctance to commit - everything sounded fantastic to me, but my girlfriend, deathly allergic to seafood, has to constantly exercise caution. He pointed out the dishes that she could order and assured us he would personally notify the chef that no cross contamination could occur. Of course we decided to dine here! I had one of the most delicious burgers I've ever had - perfectly medium rare and loaded with fresh vegetables! My girlfriend enjoyed one of the salad specials, and she was blown away with how massive and perfect it was. We're so commonly used to getting a salad entree back in the States and being underwhelmed, but everything was made fresh and with care. The restaurant dog, aptly named "Coco" came nearby our table and patiently waited for us to finish before expressing interest in a free bite! We love this sort of thing, which is very common throughout much of the country! Coco tagged along and followed us to the beach long after we left. Eating here was truly the best meal I had while in Costa Rica. Make this a destination!

“Perfect spot for our rehearsal dinner”
Reviewed July 12, 2014

The food was amazing and Nicholas, Jonas and the rest of the staff took great care of us. We booked this based on a recommendation of our wedding planner and could not have been more pleased. We enjoyed a perfect sunset before dining on fresh tuna and mahi mahi. They even accommodated a last minute request for steak for two of our non-fish eaters. Thank you so much for an amazing evening and we will be back next time we travel to CR

“Great find!”
Reviewed July 8, 2014

On our second evening in Playa Potrero, we were hungry. And it was sweltering outside. We needed a place to eat, preferably on the beach. El Coconut Beach Club fit the bill, and was wonderful to boot! Low season aside (our family was the only one there that night) the place is beautiful. The food is great : we tried the seared tuna, burger, spaghetti (gotta love how a 7 yr old always looks for noodles in a restaurant!) and calamari, all were delicious and really hit the spot. Bonus if you speak french, the owner is a french expat who took over the beach club a few weeks back. We wish him all the luck!

“Its been a year, and I still dream of their coco loco!”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

My family and I ate here on our last night in Costa Rica last summer -- and I was so sad that I didn't discover it sooner! It was one of the best meals we had while in Costa Rica, not to mention one of the lesser expensive ones for what we got. The service was great, the food was delicious, and the coco loco drinks go down WAAAAY too easily. I've been craving coco locos ever since, but can't seem to recreate them at home (sigh -- can anyone provide me a good recipe, please?!?!?) I'm ready to go back to Costa Rica -- if only to drink coco locos and visit El Coconut again!!

Note: If going at night, be sure to put on decent coat of bug spray -- the mosquitos seem to enjoy the meal there too if the breeze is still enough.

“Outstanding bargain”
Reviewed July 2, 2014

This place is under new management since the poor reviews in the spring. We had an outstanding beachfront dinner against the backdrop of a breathtaking sunset. I had a wonderful seafood pasta in a delicious sauce with a ton of lobster and shrimp, and my husband had extremely tasty mahi mahi in a flavorful mild curry sauce. We also had three glasses of wine and a cocktail, and the tab was less than $60, a real bargain for this area and the quality of the food. The service was attentive but not overbearing, and the French owner was very friendly. The menu had a number of other tempting options that we can't wait to try out.
