We liked this place more than the Shack although we only ate here once in early December 2013. My wife had fish tacos and I had pork tacos and both were better than average and the prices were very reasonable both for the tacos and the drinks. The menu is fairly limited here in that there's not a lot of variety. The service was attentive, and drinks came out fast, but the actual meal delivery was fairly slow albeit no slower than most other establishments we visited in Costa Rica. However, a more significant "issue" with this place is its location. It is located about 3 blocks (around 930 feet) off highway 911 on an amazingly bad unpaved road with holes almost big enough to swallow a car. You really have to go slow to avoid damaging one's car to get here unless you have an SUV and then you still should go slow. Also, the neighborhood this place is in is definitely one where I would not feel comfortable walking to it at night all the way from Highway 911 so it means you pretty much have to have a car to get to it if you're going to go after dark. Back to comparisons with the Shack, just like with the Shack there were few patrons here at the time we went which was a Sunday evening. For Playa Potrero, this is a good choice food and drink-wise so long as one keeps in mind the difficulty in getting there. One more note--they have a cat which definitely makes its presence known, which we actually liked because we're cat people (as well as dog people). If, however, you don't like cats at all, the cat's presence could be off-putting.

We have lived in Potrero for 5 years. Maxwell's is our GO-TO place! We are there often and always feel welcomed and appreciated. When we have friends and family visit us, we always take them at least once to Maxwell's where we know they will be greeted and treated well. Kelly and Mike are great hosts and the food is always fresh and delicious. I'm sure I've never had a bad meal there, and I think I've had almost everything they make at one time or another! Best things on the menu (in my opinion): any of the hamburgers, meatloaf, BLT (with avocado=BLAT), Greek pasta (only if you LOVE garlic like I do!), catch-of-the -day over fresh wilted spinach. Several nights have specials or activities including meatloaf Mondays, Taco Fridays, karaoke, poker, etc. When you walk in, just ask Kelly what's fresh or what are you cooking tonight, then order it!

Always awesome to experience a little of home in a different country when you travel. Mike and Kelly have done just that and more.
I first met Mike last summer in Costa Rica but unfortunately didn't meet his lovely wife until this trip. The menu is simply California meets Costa Rica. The meal selections are just like you would see at a local diner but the ingredients used are straight from CR. The burgers are Awesome! Especially with the slightly grilled and sliced local peppers.
The bar nightlife is a wonderful experience with being able to meet folks from every where and even might be lucky enough to talk to some of the great locals that frequent Maxwell's. I can't wait for my next Avacado, bacon, jalapeno pepper, cheddar cheese burger at Maxwell Cafe.

Spent many a wonderful evening dining and drinking at Maxwells. Never had a bad meal, in fact always a great meal ranging from Italian to seafood to awesome burgers and every thing in-between. A very wide menu.
Never know what you might be entertained by when you walk in -- karaoke, dj, or live band.
Kelly and Mike (and Lucy the dog) make you feel like you are part of the community with their cheery conversation and good local knowledge.
Experience shows threw your many years in the restaurant buisiness.

Keep up the good work, don't burn out!

In a remote village like Potrero, sometimes it's nice to have a conversation with a "local" that is from the good old USA! The owners are from California, but have lived in Costa Rica for years now, so they are great for some good advise!

The food was great too... nice fresh fish. My wife got the salad that you can custom order and it was fantastic! Make sure you bring a flash light for the walk home... it get really dark!
