“Basic accommodation but good enough for us”
Reviewed June 16, 2014

We arrived on the first boat on a Friday morning, and there was hardly any accommodation left on Long Beach. (Lesson learnt: book ahead!) We found Lemongrass toward the end of Long Beach.

We got a simple wooden hut, furnished with two single beds and a standing fan. There is only electricity at night and mid-day. There is also a hammock at the porch, nice for chilling in the afternoon heat. Toilets and showers (cold water only) are all shared but clean. I'd say it is a very basic accommodation but it is also one of the cheapest options on the beach front. It worked pretty well for us since we were out diving most of the day. People who don't like bugs / lizards may want to avoid this chalet as the mosquitoes there seem pretty resilient. (That said, I'm not sure what is the condition like for the other places on the island, and we did have a mosquito net which was pretty useful.)There is really not much to say about the location since Long Beach is pretty short and everything is within 5mins walk. The owner, Sin, is a friendly old man and we didn't have any issues with him.

Room Tip: The guesthouse next door has some serious partying every night before midnight so it can get a littl...

We stayed here with 7 girls and booked 3 chalets next to each other. We had the luck to arrive on friday morning and at the beginning of the high season so still had enough choice of rooms. The chalets are very very basic like written before a kingsize bed, musquito net and a fan. Too be honest I am not that kind of camping, basic person. But somehow on this island these chalets were perfect. It is located almost directly next to the beach and the chalets itself are clean. And I loved the hammock on the chalet terrace. The owner is really nice and helped us very well. I see people writing about him being angry and rude and whatnot but I didnt experience that at all. And yes do bring some earplugs because it can be a bit noisy but that is actually almost everywhere on this beach.

And well yeah eventually you wont spend that much time in your accommodation anyway. You only sleep there and you can be lazy all day on the beach to catch up and sleep more if you like. In my opinion all was very simple and all have different benefits. If you like a cheap, clean, basic accommodation, nicely located at the beach and not too much noise: this is your place.

The above is a direct quote, said to me and my girlfriend by the hostel's manager, in response to our delay in telling him our leaving date. He came over to our chalet in the afternoon and asked when we planned to check out, we asked if we could tell him in the morning before the hostel opened. He then became extremely aggressive, demanded that we pay him for the next night immediately, and started shouting that he would kill us because we were in "his house" and were being disrespectful. I was in the country for 2 months and never experienced an attitude anything like it. Needless to say we left as soon as we could, and it seems that this was not an isolated incident.

Can't argue with the location- it's pretty much right on the beach- and the rooms are basic but not horrendous. But the shared bathrooms are a nightmare and quite unhygienic, a large group of us at the hostel all became ill within a day or two of each other. At Matahari we were given a room with a balcony, a working fan and our own bathroom for about 2/3 of the price.

Overall there are much, much better hostels on the island with just as good a location for less money, so I really don't see any reason for staying at Lemongrass.

We stayed at Lemon Grass for 5 nights having trailed Long Beach and deciding that this was the best option for our stay on the island. We had a chalet on the front which meant that we had a lovely view of the beach from the chalet balcony, only a few steps away from the beach and we were also near to the communal showers and toilets.
The room is basic but clean and included a large bed, a mosquito net and a fan - we were staying in September which was hot and the fan was adequate enough to keep us cool as night. Sharing the toilets and showers wasn't a problem...although you are often also joined by little lizards and frogs!
The cafe in front of the huts offers great food - especially breakfast and the staff are very friendly and give great advice about getting around the islands. We were taken to snorkel with some sharks which was fun!
If you are a light sleeper I would advise taking some earplugs for night as there is a local karaoke which goes on until the early hours - you can also hear the music from the bars on the beach but I would image this is the same wherever you stay on Long Beach.
I would definitely reccomend this accomodation if you are happy staying somewhere basic and don't mind a bit of noise at night. Great value and a really nice place to stay!

Room Tip: The huts at the front near the beach have the best views.

I love staying at this chalet! It's basic (I don't need air condition) and its clean. There's hammock for each room so I can just hang out and read outside of the room. The owner is super friendly with guests and if he's up to it, he'll take you to go snorkeling. You'll be surprise of what you can see :)

I stayed here on the 9th August 2013 for 3 nights. The owner was really helpful and genuinely seemed to care about the trouble we were having finding accommodation. The room was basic but clean and comfortable and only steps away from the beach. I would defiantly recommend staying here.

We had a room for 70RM per night which included a double bed with mosquito net, a fan and a small porch with two chairs. What I really liked were the lockers at the reception that you could rent for 15RM for your entire stay. The shared shower and toilet were outside, and you have to flush the toilet yourself with a bucket of water (and unfortunately not all guests do that). The beach is less than a one-minute walk. All in all, no accommodation at Perhentian Kecil accepts advanced bookings, so you just have to turn up and hope for the best. I don't think Lemon Grass is any better or worse than the other accommodations out there.
